Current Affairs
Environment has grown from a minor category into a substantial one across competitive examinations, driven by climate policy, biodiversity commitments and a steady stream of conservation developments. It is also unusually well connected to static knowledge, which makes it more tractable than its breadth suggests.
A national park in the news is a geography question; a climate summit is an international institutions question; a species reclassification is an ecology question. Studying environment current affairs alongside environment as a subject makes both considerably easier to retain.

Environment — September 2026
A river agreement seventeen years in the making, a forum India hosted for the first time, and a UN day whose theme names a treaty — each ties a current event to the static environment syllabus.

The Kigali Amendment of 2016 phases down hydrofluorocarbons; the Montreal Protocol itself was signed on 16 September 1987. | Theme, the Kigali Amendment’s year and purpose, and the Montreal Protocol date are the recurring questions. (UNEP OzonAction.) |
| 15 September | Six states signed the Kishau multipurpose project agreement. The chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana signed the long-pending agreement on the Kishau Multipurpose Project in the presence of the Union Home Minister on 15 September 2026, ending a seventeen-year deadlock. The 232.6-metre concrete gravity dam on the Tons river, on the Uttarakhand–Himachal border, will store 1,562 million cubic metres, irrigate about 97,000 hectares and generate 1,476 million units a year; as a national project the Centre bears about 90 per cent of the cost. | River (Tons, a Yamuna tributary), the six states, the dam height and the 90:10 funding are the examinable details. (Union Ministry of Jal Shakti / state governments, 15 September 2026.) |
| 15–18 September | India hosted the World Circular Economy Forum for the first time. What gets asked
Making it stick
The most efficient habit in this category is geographical. Every time a protected area appears in the news, locate it — the state, the river system, the range. Every time a species is discussed, note where it is found. Those connections turn a stream of separate items into a map you already partly know, and map-based questions about places in the news are common enough to reward it directly.

More than they used to, and increasingly so — climate policy, biodiversity commitments and conservation developments now appear across UPSC, SSC, banking and state examinations. UPSC in particular treats environment and ecology as a substantial component of both prelims and mains. The category is also well connected to geography and general science, which means studying it serves several sections at once.
International climate agreements and summits with their hosts, outcomes and commitments; protected areas in the news, including their state, notable species and why they featured; species conservation status and the organisations maintaining those lists; environmental reports and indices with the publishing body and India’s position; and domestic environmental legislation, rules and missions with their targets.
Geographically. Every time a protected area appears in the news, locate it — the state, the river system, the mountain range — and every time a species is discussed, note where it is found. Those connections turn a stream of separate items into a map you already partly know, and map-based questions about places in the news are common enough across examinations to reward the habit directly.
