Study Material

Science & Technology

Two different things sit under this heading. General science is stable school-level physics, chemistry and biology, and it is where the reliable marks are. Applied technology — space, defence, computing — is closer to current affairs and dates quickly.

This material treats the stable science in depth and gives the applied side as durable principles plus the landmark programmes, flagging anything that will move.

Weighting

Where Science & Technology marks actually sit

A syllabus lists topics with equal visual weight, and no paper treats them that way. The table below collects what each Science & Technology lesson records about the exams that examine it, so the reading order on this page can be checked against the exams you are actually sitting.

Counts are ranges observed across cycles rather than promises. The notification for your cycle is what fixes the paper, and a topic can move.

Science & Technology topics, the exams that weight them, and how much of each lesson is practice.

How to use the table rather than read it

Find the rows naming the exam you are preparing for, and study those first regardless of where they sit in the reading order above — the order on this page is pedagogical, built so each lesson can rest on the one before it, and it is not a priority list. Where a topic you are weak at also carries the highest volume in your paper, that row is the whole of your next fortnight.

Method

How to study general science

General science for competitive exams is finite, which is a rare and valuable property. Physics, chemistry and biology at approximately class 10 level is a bounded body of content that can be covered completely rather than sampled.

That boundedness is the reason to treat it as a syllabus to finish rather than a topic to revise. Working through class 10 science chapter by chapter is a two-month project that secures a substantial and reliably examined block of general awareness marks — a better return than almost any comparable use of the same time.

  1. Keep a chapter checklist and mark off what is genuinely finished. Not what is started. The value of a finite syllabus is lost if it is sampled.
  2. Solve questions immediately after each chapter. Rather than at the end of the subject, when the material has faded.
  3. Connect science to everyday phenomena. Many questions are framed as observations rather than as textbook statements, and the connection is what lets you recognise them.
  4. Revisit each chapter twice more before the exam. Recall of factual science decays faster than understanding of method.

Questions

Science & Technology — FAQs

What level of science do general studies papers examine?

School level, applied. The questions are about everyday phenomena, common applications, health, technology in the news and basic principles — not about the depth a science degree covers. A science graduate should resist reading their degree material, and a candidate without a science background should not be intimidated: the level is reachable in months.

Should I study physics, chemistry and biology separately?

For general studies, study them as one applied subject organised around phenomena rather than as three disciplines. For examinations that set separate science papers, use the dedicated subject libraries on this site instead — the depth required there is different and the material is written accordingly.

How do I prepare science and technology current affairs?

By category: space missions and their objectives, defence systems and their capability, health and disease, energy, and computing and communications developments. Learn what a development does and who did it rather than the date it was announced. That framing matches how the questions are set and it survives the news cycle.

Is everyday science worth a separate study slot?

Yes, and it is under-prepared relative to how often it is examined. Why a pressure cooker works, why a mirage forms, why a particular deficiency causes a particular symptom — these are cheap, repeatable marks, and they are rarely covered in the same place as textbook science.
