Police

Police recruitment in India runs through dozens of separate processes — each state’s own constable and sub-inspector recruitment, plus central examinations for the armed police forces, the railway police and the Delhi Police. They differ in syllabus detail and language, and they share a structure so consistent that preparing for one prepares you substantially for the others.

The most important thing that structure implies is this: the written paper is rarely the hardest part. The physical efficiency test, the physical standard test and the detailed medical examination eliminate far more candidates, and they are the stages that cannot be prepared for in a final month.

The routes

Central and state police recruitment

  • State police constable and sub-inspector — conducted by each state’s recruitment board, usually in the state language, with a substantial block of state-specific content.
  • SSC GD Constable — central recruitment for General Duty Constable posts across BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP and Assam Rifles.
  • SSC CPO — Sub-Inspector in the Delhi Police and the central armed police forces, with a distinctive second paper devoted entirely to English.
  • RPF Constable and Sub-Inspector — the Railway Protection Force, recruited through the Railway Recruitment Boards.
  • UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant — direct officer entry into the armed police forces, with a 200-mark descriptive paper.

What they share

The common shape, and what it means for preparation

Almost every police recruitment follows the same four-stage sequence: a written examination, a physical efficiency test, a physical standard test, and a detailed medical examination. The written papers converge on general knowledge and current affairs, reasoning, arithmetic and a language section — with general knowledge almost always the largest component, which inverts the priority most candidates bring from SSC or banking preparation.

Three things to do in week one

  1. Read the medical standards for your target recruitment. Vision, colour perception, tattoos, flat feet and knock knees have all ended candidacies after every other stage was cleared. Several are identifiable in advance and some are correctable given time.
  2. Start running. Whatever distance you can manage, built up gradually. This is the longest-lead component and it cannot be compressed.
  3. Begin a daily general knowledge habit. The largest written section, and the most improvable through consistent effort.

Questions

Police — FAQs

Which stage eliminates the most police candidates?

The medical examination, followed by the physical efficiency test. Written papers are designed to be widely clearable, since these recruitments fill large numbers of posts from very large fields. The physical stages require months of consistent training to pass with margin, and the medical assesses vision and colour perception, hearing, dental condition, orthopaedic conditions such as flat feet and knock knees, and rules on body marks — several of which are identifiable in advance and some correctable given time.

How do state police exams differ from central ones?

Mainly in language and content. State recruitments are usually conducted in the state language and include a substantial block of state-specific material — the state’s history, geography, districts, culture, prominent figures and administrative structure — which national competitive material does not cover at all. Central recruitments such as SSC GD, SSC CPO and RPF cover national content only. Physical and medical standards also differ between forces and often by region.

Which subject carries the most marks in police written papers?

General knowledge and current affairs, in almost every police recruitment, usually by a clear margin over reasoning, arithmetic and language. This inverts the usual competitive-exam priority, and candidates arriving from SSC or banking preparation — where quantitative aptitude dominates — routinely mis-weight their study. General knowledge is also the most improvable section, since it responds directly to steady daily revision rather than to a skill that builds slowly.
