Online PTE Coaching and the PTE Academic Guide 2026

Looking for online PTE coaching? Know the test first, then judge any course against it. PTE Academic is Pearson’s computer-based English test for university admission and for visas to Australia, New Zealand and, in its UKVI form, the United Kingdom. It is taken in a single sitting of about two hours at a Pearson test centre, every answer — spoken, written or clicked — is captured by the computer, and the marking is automated, with human review of some responses before a score is finalised. Results typically arrive within two business days.

What distinguishes it from IELTS and TOEFL is the design of its tasks. Most of the twenty question types score more than one skill at once — reading a text aloud is marked for reading and speaking, retelling a lecture for listening and speaking, summarising a spoken text for listening and writing — so the four communicative scores are built from overlapping evidence rather than four separate papers. The test was revised in 2025, when two speaking tasks, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation, were added and the IELTS concordance was republished.

Overview

What PTE Academic is, and who it suits

The test opens with an unscored personal introduction, then runs through nine speaking and writing tasks, five reading tasks and eight listening tasks without a separate speaking appointment. Speaking is recorded through a headset at a shared test-centre desk, which is a different experience from a face-to-face IELTS interview and one worth practising: the microphone opens after a tone, closes after a pause of a few seconds, and does not allow a second attempt.

Scores are reported as an overall score from 10 to 90 and as four communicative-skill scores for listening, reading, speaking and writing, with a Skills Profile that shows where marks were lost. Pearson’s concordance with IELTS Academic, revised in July 2025 after the test changed, puts 47 alongside IELTS 6.0, 55 alongside 6.5, 63 alongside 7.0 and 79 alongside 8.0 — figures institutions use to set their own thresholds, which remain theirs to decide.

What makes PTE Academic distinctive

  • Integrated tasks — most question types score two skills, so a weak listening score can surface in speaking tasks and a weak reading score in writing.
  • Automated marking — consistent and fast, and indifferent to accent, but sensitive to hesitation, unfinished sentences and going over time.
  • A single two-hour sitting — no separate speaking day, and results usually inside two days.
  • Free unlimited score sending — scores are shared digitally from the myPTE account to as many institutions as needed.

Which PTE test you need

PTE Academic is the test for university admission and for Australian and New Zealand visas. UK visa applications that require a four-skills Secure English Language Test need PTE Academic UKVI, which is the same test taken under UKVI conditions. PTE Core is a general-English test recognised by Canada’s IRCC for permanent residence and citizenship, not for study. Book the variant your institution or visa route names.

Online PTE coaching

Online PTE coaching: what a course must do for a machine-marked test

PTE Academic is scored by Pearson’s automated system, which makes it the test most suited to online coaching — and the test where bad coaching does most harm, because the marking rewards habits that can be drilled and punishes ones that feel natural. A good online PTE course teaches the twenty question types as twenty routines, scores practice the way the machine does, and stops when the target score is met.

What online PTE coaching has to deliver

  • A template for every speaking type — Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation are scored on content, fluency and pronunciation; a fixed structure delivered without pauses lifts two of the three at once.
  • Scored practice on the 10–90 scale — practice marked by a trainer’s ear tells you less than Pearson’s scored practice tests, which the coaching should use and interpret.
  • Form rules drilled to reflex — one sentence of 5–75 words for Summarize Written Text, 50–70 words for the spoken summary, 200–300 for the essay; a form error scores zero.
  • Microphone discipline — speaking immediately after the tone, keeping going, finishing before the clock; the recording closes after a few seconds of silence.
Batch or one-to-one
PTE strategy transfers well in a batch; pronunciation and fluency need a trainer listening to your recordings. A short batch course followed by recorded-response reviews is a common and sensible shape.
How the trainer knows the test
Ask whether the course covers the two speaking types added in 2025 and uses the July 2025 IELTS concordance; material that stops at the old question list is out of date.
What a fair course costs
Online PTE coaching in India is usually a short course of a few weeks priced below the ₹18,900 test fee; the money is best spent on scored practice tests and recording reviews rather than on long video libraries.

Procedure

How to book PTE Academic, what happens at the test centre, and how scores are released

Everything runs through a myPTE account: booking, rescheduling, results and score sending.

From booking to score report

  1. Create a myPTE account Enter your name exactly as printed in the passport, including middle names in the given-names field, and your email and phone. One account serves every PTE booking.
  2. Choose the test and a centre Answer the booking questions — where you want to go and what for — to be shown the right test, then pick a centre and a date and time at least 24 hours ahead. India has centres in more than sixty cities and slots most days.
  3. Pay By Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover, or with a voucher; ₹18,900 including GST in India in 2026. The confirmation appears in the account and by email.
  4. Prepare with the free and scored material Smart Prep in the account carries free video courses and a study plan; Pearson’s scored practice tests are the only practice marked by the live scoring system.
  5. Test day Arrive at least 30 minutes early with the passport. The administrator checks the ID, takes a digital photograph and a digital signature, and seats you in a partitioned booth with a computer, headset, notepad and pencil among 10 to 15 other candidates. The test runs about two hours without a scheduled break.
  6. Results Typically within 48 hours and at most five working days, by email alert to the myPTE account: an overall score, four communicative-skill scores and a Skills Profile with recommendations.
  7. Send scores From the account to any number of institutions, free, at any time while the score is valid; recipients verify it online.
  8. If the score is short Rebook as soon as the result is out, or request a rescore of the spoken and written responses for a fee — rarely productive, since the scoring is automated and consistent.

Exam pattern

PTE Academic exam pattern and marking

The three parts in order, with what each question type scores.
PartTimeQuestion typesSkills scored
Speaking and Writing76–84 minutesPersonal Introduction (unscored); Read Aloud; Repeat Sentence; Describe Image; Retell Lecture; Answer Short Question; Summarize Group Discussion; Respond to a Situation; Summarize Written Text; Write EssaySpeaking, and listening through the integrated tasks; reading and writing through the two written tasks
Reading23–30 minutesFill in the Blanks (drop-down); Multiple Choice, multiple answers; Re-order Paragraphs; Fill in the Blanks (drag and drop); Multiple Choice, single answerReading, with writing credited in the drop-down blanks
Listening31–39 minutesSummarize Spoken Text; Multiple Choice, multiple answers; Fill in the Blanks; Highlight Correct Summary; Multiple Choice, single answer; Select Missing Word; Highlight Incorrect Words; Write from DictationListening, with writing through the summary, blanks and dictation and reading through the summary and incorrect-words items
How the score is built
Every response is scored automatically on correctness and, for open responses, on traits — content, oral fluency and pronunciation for speech; content, form, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and structure for writing. Each trait feeds the communicative skills it evidences, so one task can move two scores. The overall score is not an average of the four but a separate estimate from all items.
Negative scoring
Multiple-answer questions and Highlight Incorrect Words lose a mark per wrong selection to a floor of zero; every other item scores zero or positive.
Form rules with zero for a breach
Summarize Written Text must be one sentence of 5 to 75 words; Summarize Spoken Text 50 to 70 words; Write Essay 200 to 300 words. Under or over the limit, or a second sentence in the first, scores nothing for that item.

Study plan

How to prepare for PTE Academic

A six-week plan to a target score

  1. Week 1 — learn the twenty tasks Work Pearson’s free sample questions type by type, reading the scoring rule for each; sit one scored practice test at the end of the week for a baseline.
  2. Weeks 2–3 — speaking templates and microphone habits A fixed structure for Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation; daily Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence with recordings played back; speak on the tone, no pauses, finish inside the clock.
  3. Weeks 2–4 — writing to the form rules One-sentence summaries of 5 to 75 words, essays of 200 to 300 in twenty minutes, spoken-text summaries of 50 to 70; check the count before every submit.
  4. Weeks 3–5 — listening and reading under negative scoring Daily dictation and gap-fill practice; drill the multiple-answer and Highlight Incorrect Words items to select only when sure; Re-order Paragraphs on topic sentences and reference words.
  5. Week 5 — second scored practice test Compare the trait scores with the baseline; spend the remaining time on the trait, not the skill, that is lowest.
  6. Week 6 — book and sit Book a date at least 24 hours ahead once the practice score clears the target in every skill; results follow within two days, so a retake can be booked immediately if needed.

Questions

PTE Academic — FAQs

What is the PTE Academic exam pattern?

Three parts in one sitting of about two hours: Speaking and Writing at 76 to 84 minutes with nine question types, Reading at 23 to 30 minutes with five, and Listening at 31 to 39 minutes with eight. Every response is captured on a computer at a Pearson test centre and scored by Pearson’s automated system, with some responses reviewed by a human expert. Scores are reported overall and for each of the four skills on a 10 to 90 scale.

What changed in PTE Academic in 2025?

Two speaking tasks were added — Summarize Group Discussion, a two-minute spoken summary of a three-person discussion, and Respond to a Situation, a 40-second spoken reply to a described situation — and Pearson republished its IELTS concordance in July 2025 to reflect the updated test.

What PTE score equals IELTS 6.5 or 7?

By Pearson’s July 2025 concordance, PTE 55 corresponds to IELTS 6.5 and PTE 63 to IELTS 7.0; 47 corresponds to 6.0 and 79 to 8.0. Institutions and visa authorities set their own PTE minimums, so check the requirement rather than converting.

How quickly do PTE results come and how long are they valid?

Most results are released within two business days and all within five, to the myPTE account, with an email when they are ready. Scores are valid for two years from the test date and can be sent to as many institutions as needed at no charge.

Can PTE Academic be taken at home?

No. PTE Academic is taken only at an authorised Pearson test centre on a computer. Pearson states it cannot be taken at home; the at-home option that once existed is no longer offered for this test.

What is the PTE Academic fee in India?

Fees are set by country and shown at booking. In India the fee was ₹18,900 including GST from March 2026, the same for PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI. Cancellation is free 14 or more days before the test, refunds half the fee from 13 to 8 days before, and nothing inside 7 days.

Do I need online PTE coaching to score 65 or 79?

Many candidates reach 65 with the official guide, scored practice tests and disciplined use of templates; 79 usually needs a trainer listening to recordings, because the fluency and pronunciation traits that separate 70 from 79 are hard to hear in one’s own speech. Choose coaching that reviews your recordings and uses Pearson’s scored practice tests rather than one that sells video hours.

What should an online PTE course cover?

All twenty question types with their prompt lengths, time limits and scoring rules, including Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation added in 2025; speaking templates and microphone discipline; the form rules for the summaries and essay; the negative-scoring items in reading and listening; and scored full-length practice interpreted against your target score.

How do I book PTE Academic in India?

Create a myPTE account with your name exactly as in your passport, answer the booking questions to select PTE Academic, choose a centre and a slot at least 24 hours ahead, and pay ₹18,900 by card or voucher. Confirmation is emailed and shown in the account, which is also where rescheduling, results and score sending happen.

What happens on PTE test day?

Arrive at least 30 minutes early with the passport. The administrator checks the ID, takes a digital photograph and a digital signature, and seats you in a partitioned booth with a headset, notepad and pencil among 10 to 15 candidates. The test runs about two hours with no scheduled break, and results follow within 48 hours in most cases.

Can I reschedule or cancel a PTE booking?

Rescheduling is free with more than 14 full calendar days to go, up to six times per booking; inside 14 days a booking cannot be rescheduled and must be cancelled and rebooked. Cancellation refunds the full fee with more than 14 days’ notice, half between 14 and 7 days, and nothing with 7 days or fewer. Illness or family emergency can be put to Pearson on an emergency form with evidence.

Is there negative marking in PTE?

Only on the multiple-answer questions in reading and listening and on Highlight Incorrect Words, where each wrong selection loses a mark down to zero for that item. Everything else scores zero or positive — but a form breach, such as a two-sentence Summarize Written Text or a 190-word essay, scores zero for the item.

What PTE score do I need for Australia or the UK?

For an Australian Student visa the Department of Home Affairs lists PTE Academic 47, or 39 and 31 with packaged English courses; its Competent, Proficient and Superior bands for other visas are 50, 65 and 79 in each skill. For a UK Student visa at degree level the SELT requirement is B2, which PTE Academic UKVI meets with 59 in each component. Universities commonly ask 58 to 67 overall.
