UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant 2026: Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, PET, Cut-off and Free Mock Tests

The Central Armed Police Forces examination recruits Assistant Commandants — the entry-level gazetted officer rank — into the BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB. It is a direct officer entry into forces that between them secure borders, industrial installations and internal order.

Its distinguishing feature among uniformed recruitments is Paper 2: a three-hour descriptive paper of essay and comprehension. No other central police recruitment at this level asks candidates to write at length, and it separates the field more sharply than the objective paper does.

Overview

What UPSC CAPF is, and who it suits

Assistant Commandant is the direct entry officer rank in the central armed police forces. Successful candidates are allocated to one of the five forces based on merit and preference, and take up command responsibilities relatively early — leading a company-sized body of personnel in operational conditions.

The selection reflects that responsibility. The written examination combines an objective paper on general ability and intelligence with a descriptive paper testing written expression and reasoning. Physical efficiency and medical standards follow, and the interview carries meaningful marks. It is a process designed to test judgement and communication alongside knowledge and fitness.

The five forces

  • Border Security Force — guarding the land borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
  • Central Reserve Police Force — internal security, counter-insurgency and law and order assistance to states.
  • Central Industrial Security Force — security of industrial installations, airports and critical infrastructure.
  • Indo-Tibetan Border Police — guarding the high-altitude northern border.
  • Sashastra Seema Bal — guarding the borders with Nepal and Bhutan.

Allocation follows merit and preference

You are not applying to one force. Candidates submit a preference order and are allocated according to rank, which means the force you serve in is determined by your position in the merit list as much as by your choice.

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.

Application to allotment

How UPSC CAPF runs, from the online application to the two papers, the physical tests, the interview, the medical and force allotment

The steps in the order they happen, with the fees and windows the 2026 notification and written result specify.

The UPSC CAPF process, from registration to recommendation

  1. Create the account and the Universal Registration Number profile on upsconline.nic.in The Commission’s portal has four modules: account creation, universal registration (the URN profile with your identity, photograph, signature, photo-ID and educational particulars), a common application form, and an examination-specific form. The first three are filled once and reused for every UPSC examination; the URN profile must be locked before an examination form can be submitted, and the photo-ID entered there is the one carried to every stage.
  2. Fill the examination-specific form in the notified window Choose the centre, the medium and language options, the optional subject or service preferences where the notification asks for them, claim any category, PwBD or fee-remission benefit with the certificate details, and submit before 6 p.m. on the last date. A withdrawal window of about a week usually follows the closing date for candidates who no longer wish to appear.
  3. Pay the fee ₹200 online; nil for women, SC and ST candidates.
  4. e-Admit card Issued on the portal about a week to ten days before the examination; it is not posted. Print it, check the photograph and the centre, and carry it with the photo-ID named in the URN profile. Centres are allotted first-come, and a candidate who does not get a preferred centre is allotted another in the same region.
  5. The written examination Objective papers are answered on an OMR sheet in black ballpoint pen, with the question paper series and roll number coded by hand — the Commission publishes a note on the common OMR mistakes that lead to rejection. Conventional papers are handwritten in the question-cum-answer booklet. Provisional answer keys are opened for representations on the portal within a week of an objective paper.
  6. Result and the next stage Results are published as roll-number lists on upsc.gov.in with a press note; marks and cut-offs are released only after the final result. Qualified candidates get a window on the portal to pay the next-stage fee, update details and submit the detailed application form where the examination has one.
  7. Written result and the 15-day window Roll numbers above the cut-off are published; every qualified candidate must log in within 15 days to update qualification status and upload proof, failing which they are not allowed into the later stages.
  8. PST and PET conducted by the forces Height, chest and weight are measured first; candidates within the standards run the 100 and 800 metres, jump and, for men, throw. Failure at either test ends the candidature.
  9. Interview, medical and final result Interviewed for 150 marks with originals of every certificate; medically examined afterwards; ranked on the 600-mark total and allotted a force by rank, category and preference. A reserve list is maintained.

Paper II is evaluated only above the Paper I cut-off

The general Paper I cut-off was 90.06 of 250 in 2025 and the written cut-off 173 of 450. A strong essay does not help a candidate below the Paper I line, and the minimum of 25 per cent in Paper II applies as well.

Exam pattern

UPSC CAPF exam pattern and marking

The UPSC CAPF exam pattern below is the scheme in the 2026 notification: an objective screening paper and a descriptive paper on one day, qualifying physical tests, and a 150-mark interview. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

One third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for every wrong answer in the objective papers; a question left blank costs nothing, and a question with more than one answer marked counts as wrong. Paper II is evaluated only for candidates above the Paper I cut-off, and a minimum of 25 per cent in Paper II (15 per cent for ex-servicemen) applies to the written cut-off.

Study plan

How to prepare for UPSC CAPF

CAPF is decided in three places: a 250-mark objective paper whose cut-off is about 90, a 200-mark descriptive paper in which the essay may be written in Hindi but the précis and comprehension must be in English, and a physical test that sends home candidates who cleared both. Prepare the writing and the running from the first month.

A five-month plan

  1. Months 1–2: Paper I breadth Reasoning and quantitative aptitude; general science; polity, economy, modern history, geography; daily current affairs with a security and human-rights lens. Start running 800 metres and practising the long jump.
  2. Month 3: Paper II writing One essay a week on freedom-struggle, polity, economy, security and human-rights themes; précis and comprehension in English twice a week.
  3. Month 4: full mocks A Paper I mock every week with the deduction applied, a timed Paper II every fortnight, and a PET rehearsal every week.
  4. Month 5: revision, PET margin and the interview file Revise from notes; be inside every PET standard; prepare the interview on the forces, current events and your own background.

Questions

UPSC CAPF — FAQs

Which forces does UPSC CAPF recruit for?

The Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Sashastra Seema Bal. Candidates submit a preference order rather than applying to a single force, and allocation follows from merit position and preference together, so the force you serve in depends substantially on your rank.

How important is CAPF Paper 2?

It carries 200 marks — close to half the written total — and it tests a skill objective preparation does not build. Candidates preparing with standard competitive-exam material typically cover Paper 1 well and Paper 2 barely at all, and the gap shows directly in the result. Essay and precis writing under time should start in the first month of preparation rather than in the final weeks.

What should I read for the CAPF essay paper?

Follow internal security, border management, the relationship between development and insurgency, human rights in policing, and centre-state security coordination — the themes CAPF essay topics return to across cycles. The aim is not to memorise essays but to form considered positions you can adapt to whatever framing appears, and to be able to acknowledge the reasonable counter-argument. The same reading serves the comprehension section and the interview.

What are the UPSC CAPF 2026 exam dates and result?

The examination was notified on 18 February 2026 with applications to 12 March; the written papers were held on 19 July 2026 and the written result — roll numbers qualified for the physical tests — was published on 25 August 2026. The PST/PET, interviews and final result follow; the 2025 cycle’s final result came on 7 August 2026. CAPF 2027 is on the calendar for 4 July 2027.

What is the UPSC CAPF exam pattern?

Two papers on one day: Paper I, General Ability and Intelligence, 125 objective questions for 250 marks in two hours with one third of a mark off per wrong answer; and Paper II, General Studies, Essay and Comprehension, descriptive for 200 marks in three hours — essays for 80 marks in English or Hindi and comprehension, précis and language for 120 marks in English. Paper II is evaluated only above the Paper I cut-off. Then a qualifying PST and PET, a 150-mark interview and a medical; final merit is out of 600.

What was the CAPF cut-off?

For CAPF 2025: Paper I 90.06 out of 250, written 173 out of 450 and final 285 out of 600 for general candidates; EWS 88.71, 172 and 282; OBC 90.06, 173 and 292; SC 82.00, 162 and 265; ST 80.65, 156 and 260. A minimum of 25 per cent in Paper II applies.

How many vacancies are there in CAPF 2026?

349: BSF 108, CRPF 106, CISF 70, SSB 53 and ITBP 12, with 10 per cent reserved for ex-servicemen. CAPF 2025 had 432 vacancies and recommended 350 candidates with a reserve list of 164.

Who is eligible for CAPF Assistant Commandant?

Graduates, men and women, aged 20 to 25 on 1 August 2026 — born between 2 August 2001 and 1 August 2006 — with five years’ relaxation for SC and ST, three for OBC and five for civilian central government servants. Physical standards are 165 cm, 81 cm chest with 5 cm expansion and 50 kg for men, and 157 cm and 46 kg for women. Final-year candidates may sit the written examination. The fee is ₹200, nil for women, SC and ST.

What are the CAPF PET standards?

100 metres in 16 seconds (men) or 18 seconds (women); 800 metres in 3 minutes 45 seconds or 4 minutes 45 seconds; long jump of 3.5 metres (men) or 3.0 metres (women) in three chances; and a 7.26 kg shot put of 4.5 metres for men in three chances. The PST measures height, chest (men) and weight first. Both are qualifying; candidates who fail are not interviewed.
