CDS 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Vacancies, Cut-off and Free Mock Tests

The Combined Defence Services examination is the graduate entry into the officer cadre, leading to the Indian Military Academy, the Indian Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy or the Officers Training Academy. One examination, four academies, and — crucially — two different written papers depending on which you apply for.

That last point catches candidates out. Applicants to the Officers Training Academy sit two papers rather than three; there is no mathematics paper for that entry. It is a materially different examination taken under the same name.

Overview

What CDS is, and who it suits

CDS is the principal graduate route to a commission in the armed forces. Successful candidates join the Indian Military Academy for a permanent commission in the Army, the Indian Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, or the Officers Training Academy for a short service commission. The academy determines both the papers you sit and the eligibility conditions you must meet.

The examination is held twice a year, which gives candidates more opportunities than NDA within a comparable age window. Eligibility varies by academy: a degree in any discipline suffices for the IMA and OTA, while the Naval Academy generally expects an engineering degree and the Air Force Academy expects physics and mathematics at the twelfth level or an engineering degree.

The four entries and what they require

  • Indian Military Academy — permanent commission in the Army. A degree in any discipline. Three written papers.
  • Indian Naval Academy — permanent commission in the Navy. Generally an engineering degree. Three written papers.
  • Air Force Academy — permanent commission in the Air Force. Physics and mathematics at class 12, or an engineering degree. Three written papers, plus an additional aptitude test at the SSB.
  • Officers Training Academy — short service commission. A degree in any discipline. Two written papers — English and General Knowledge only.

The Air Force entry has an extra test

Candidates for the Air Force Academy sit a computerised pilot selection system test at the Services Selection Board, in addition to the standard SSB process. It is a one-time test — a candidate who does not clear it cannot reattempt it for flying branch entry — which makes it worth understanding in advance rather than meeting cold.

Eligibility

Who can apply for CDS

Eligibility differs by academy in both qualification and age, and is reckoned on the date the course commences. Candidates must be unmarried; OTA women may be unmarried, issueless widows or issueless divorcees who have not remarried.

Other conditions

  • Final-year candidates — May apply and must submit proof of graduation — by the date the notification fixes — before the SSB for Army, Navy and Air Force first-choice candidates, and before the course for OTA.
  • Fee — ₹200 online; women, SC and ST candidates are exempt.
  • NCC C certificate holders — Reserved seats at the IMA, INA and AFA; the Air Force seats through NCC Special Entry are separately notified.
  • Physical standards — Height, weight, vision and other standards by service in the notification’s appendix, examined by a medical board after the SSB.

Selection process

How CDS selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Written examinationObjective papers of 100 marks, two hours each, one dayEnglish, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics for IMA, INA and AFA candidates (300 marks); English and General Knowledge only for OTA candidates (200 marks). One third of a mark per wrong answer. General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics are set bilingually; the minimum qualifying marks in each subject were 20 per cent in CDS II 2025.
SSB interviewFive days; 300 marks for IMA, INA and AFA, 200 for OTAWritten qualifiers register on joinindianarmy.nic.in and are allotted a Selection Centre. Stage I screens on day one; stage II runs four days. Air Force candidates take the Computerised Pilot Selection System after recommendation. SSB marks equal the written marks for each academy.
Medical examination and final meritBoard medical; UPSC merit lists by academyFinal merit is written plus SSB — out of 600 for IMA, INA and AFA and 400 for OTA — published by UPSC academy by academy, with the OTA lists later. CDS II 2025’s IMA, INA and AFA result came on 30 March 2026 and its OTA result on 7 August 2026.

Application to the academy

How CDS runs, from the UPSC application to the written papers, the SSB, the medical and the merit lists by academy

The steps in the order they happen, with the fees and windows the 2026 notifications specify.

The CDS process, from registration to recommendation

  1. Create the account and the Universal Registration Number profile on upsconline.nic.in The Commission’s portal has four modules: account creation, universal registration (the URN profile with your identity, photograph, signature, photo-ID and educational particulars), a common application form, and an examination-specific form. The first three are filled once and reused for every UPSC examination; the URN profile must be locked before an examination form can be submitted, and the photo-ID entered there is the one carried to every stage.
  2. Fill the examination-specific form in the notified window Choose the centre, the medium and language options, the optional subject or service preferences where the notification asks for them, claim any category, PwBD or fee-remission benefit with the certificate details, and submit before 6 p.m. on the last date. A withdrawal window of about a week usually follows the closing date for candidates who no longer wish to appear.
  3. Pay the fee ₹200 online; nil for women, SC and ST candidates.
  4. e-Admit card Issued on the portal about a week to ten days before the examination; it is not posted. Print it, check the photograph and the centre, and carry it with the photo-ID named in the URN profile. Centres are allotted first-come, and a candidate who does not get a preferred centre is allotted another in the same region.
  5. The written examination Objective papers are answered on an OMR sheet in black ballpoint pen, with the question paper series and roll number coded by hand — the Commission publishes a note on the common OMR mistakes that lead to rejection. Conventional papers are handwritten in the question-cum-answer booklet. Provisional answer keys are opened for representations on the portal within a week of an objective paper.
  6. Result and the next stage Results are published as roll-number lists on upsc.gov.in with a press note; marks and cut-offs are released only after the final result. Qualified candidates get a window on the portal to pay the next-stage fee, update details and submit the detailed application form where the examination has one.
  7. Written result and SSB registration Qualified candidates are listed by roll number with the academies they qualified for; they register on joinindianarmy.nic.in and are allotted Selection Centre dates. Candidates who opted for more than one academy attend one SSB and are considered for each in preference order.
  8. SSB: stage I on the day of reporting Officer Intelligence Rating tests and the Picture Perception and Description Test; candidates are screened in or out the same day on the combination of the two.
  9. SSB: stage II over four days Psychology tests, Group Testing Officer tasks and the interview, then the conference. Air Force candidates who are recommended also take the Computerised Pilot Selection System, a once-in-a-lifetime test; those who failed it or the earlier PABT are not eligible for the flying branch.
  10. Medical examination and the final merit list Recommended candidates are medically examined by a board; the final merit list combines written and SSB marks, which carry equal weight, and is published by UPSC with a press note. The Services then issue joining instructions for the course.

Rank the academies in the order you would join

Preferences are collected in the application and drive both the SSB call and the final allotment. A candidate who qualifies for the IMA but ranked the OTA first is allotted the OTA if recommended, and the OTA commission is a ten-year short service commission rather than a permanent one.

Exam pattern

CDS exam pattern and marking

The CDS exam pattern below is the scheme in the 2026 notifications: three objective papers for the IMA, INA and AFA, two for the OTA, and an SSB carrying the same marks as the written stage. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

CDS written examination: objective papers of 100 marks and two hours each; one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer.
PaperForMarksTimeMedium
EnglishAll academies1002 hoursEnglish
General KnowledgeAll academies1002 hoursEnglish and Hindi
Elementary MathematicsIMA, INA and AFA only1002 hoursEnglish and Hindi
Written total, SSB and final merit by academy.
AcademyWrittenSSBFinal merit
IMA, INA, AFA300300600
OTA (men and women)200200400

One third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for every wrong answer in the objective papers; a question left blank costs nothing, and a question with more than one answer marked counts as wrong. The Commission fixes minimum marks in each subject — 20 per cent in CDS II 2025 — and an aggregate cut-off by academy.

Study plan

How to prepare for CDS

CDS is three (or two) short objective papers where the cut-off is well under half the marks — 124 of 300 for the IMA in CDS II 2025 — followed by an SSB that doubles the marks at stake. Accuracy with a third off per error, a broad General Knowledge base and SSB preparation from the first month decide it.

A five-month plan

  1. Months 1–2: General Knowledge and English History, geography, polity, economy, science, defence and current affairs; grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and error spotting.
  2. Month 3: Elementary Mathematics (IMA, INA, AFA) Class-10 arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration and statistics to speed; OTA candidates use the month for deeper GK.
  3. Month 4: full mocks A full three-paper mock every week with the deduction applied and an error log; SSB practice — group discussion, self-description, fitness.
  4. Month 5: revision and the examination Revise from notes; keep current affairs to the date; prepare the PIQ form for the SSB.

Questions

CDS — FAQs

Is there a mathematics paper in CDS OTA?

No. The Officers Training Academy entry has only two papers, English and General Knowledge, carrying a hundred marks each. This is the most consequential difference between the CDS entries, and it changes preparation entirely — an OTA-only candidate has no reason to work through the elementary mathematics syllabus and every reason to put that time into the two papers that decide their whole written score.

How is CDS different from NDA?

CDS is the graduate entry and NDA is the school-level entry. NDA candidates apply from class 12 and undergo three years at the academy before commissioning; CDS candidates apply with a degree and go directly into academy training for a commission. The papers differ too — NDA has a heavy 300-mark mathematics paper and a 600-mark General Ability Test, while CDS uses three shorter hundred-mark papers, or two for the OTA entry. Both are followed by the same five-day Services Selection Board process.

What is the defence awareness component in CDS General Knowledge?

CDS general knowledge papers consistently include questions on the armed forces themselves — service structures and ranks, aircraft and naval vessels, joint exercises, defence organisations and recent acquisitions. General competitive-exam material does not cover this, which makes past CDS papers and a regularly followed defence news source effectively the only systematic preparation for it. Because the themes recur reliably, it is some of the most dependable material in the paper.

What are the CDS 2026 exam dates?

CDS I 2026 was held on 12 April 2026 with the written result on 8 May, when 8,826 candidates qualified for the SSB. CDS II 2026 was notified on 20 May with applications to 9 June and held on 13 September 2026; its written result is due about eight weeks later. CDS I 2027 is on the calendar for 11 April 2027 with the notification on 2 December 2026.

What is the CDS exam pattern?

Objective papers of 100 marks and two hours each on one day: English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics for the IMA, INA and AFA (300 marks), and English and General Knowledge for the OTA (200 marks), with one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer. The SSB interview carries the same marks as the written stage — 300 or 200 — so the final merit is out of 600 for the IMA, INA and AFA and 400 for the OTA.

What was the CDS cut-off?

For CDS II 2025, the last candidate qualified in the written examination scored 124.11 out of 300 for the IMA, 109.23 for the INA, 132.51 for the AFA, 80.01 out of 200 for OTA men and 98.06 for OTA women, with 20 per cent required in each subject; the last recommended candidates’ aggregates were 249.61, 238.50, 263.67, 162.84 and 193.01.

How many vacancies are there in CDS II 2026?

451: IMA 100, Indian Naval Academy 26, Air Force Academy 32, OTA men 275 and OTA women 18, for courses commencing in July 2027 (October 2027 for the OTA), with reservations for NCC C certificate holders at the IMA, INA and AFA.

Who is eligible for CDS?

Unmarried graduates: any degree for the IMA and OTA; a degree in engineering or a B.Sc. with physics (and physics and mathematics at 10+2) for the Navy; a degree with physics and mathematics at 10+2 or an engineering degree for the Air Force. Age is 19–24 for the IMA and INA, 20–24 for the AFA (26 with a commercial pilot licence) and 19–25 for the OTA, reckoned on the course commencement date. Final-year candidates may apply. The fee is ₹200, nil for women, SC and ST.

Is there negative marking in CDS?

Yes — one third of a mark for every wrong answer in each paper, with no deduction for unanswered questions.
