MAT September 2026 Test Dates, Registration, Fee, Exam Pattern, Eligibility and Free MAT Mock Tests

MAT is conducted by the All India Management Association several times a year and accepted by a wide range of business schools. Its most useful feature for a candidate is that frequency: with multiple cycles annually and multiple delivery modes, it offers more opportunities than any other national management entrance.

Its content is conventional with one addition — a section on the economic and business environment, which tests knowledge of business, economy and current affairs rather than aptitude, and which is entirely learnable in advance.

What changed

AIMA’s structure is now 150 questions in 120 minutes — five sections of 30 — with a fee of ₹2,300 for one mode and ₹4,000 for both, up from ₹2,200 and ₹3,800 in the September 2025 information. Older guides still describe a 200-question, 150-minute paper.

Overview

What MAT is, and who it suits

MAT is a national management entrance run several times a year, with candidates able to choose from computer-based, internet-based and paper-based delivery in the cycles where those are offered. Its scores are accepted by a broad set of institutions, and because it recurs frequently, a candidate is never far from the next opportunity.

The paper has five sections: language comprehension, intelligence and critical reasoning, mathematical skills, data analysis and sufficiency, and economic and business environment. The first four are conventional aptitude sections; the fifth is a knowledge section, and it is the one that distinguishes a MAT preparation from a general management-entrance preparation.

What MAT offers a candidate

  • Frequency — multiple cycles a year, so a disappointing attempt is quickly followed by another opportunity.
  • Delivery choice — computer-based, internet-based and paper-based modes have been offered in different cycles.
  • Wide acceptance — a large number of institutions accept the score.
  • A knowledge section — economic and business environment, which rewards preparation directly.

The business environment section now counts

AIMA’s information for the September 2026 session states that the overall score is based on all five sections, so the economic and business environment section is no longer the one to leave for the end. Institutions may still weight sections differently; confirm the position for your cycle in the bulletin.

Eligibility

Who can apply for MAT

MAT eligibility, from the information to candidates on aima.in.

Who may apply.
ConditionRule
DegreeA graduate in any discipline from a recognised university, or a final-year student who can produce the degree at admission
Age and attemptsNo age limit; a candidate may appear in every session
NationalityIndian and foreign candidates
ModesPBT, CBT and, where offered, IBT (remote proctored); one or both of PBT and CBT in a session

Also from AIMA

  • Documents — a photograph of 10–50 KB and a signature of 5–20 KB, and a card, net banking, UPI or wallet for the fee.
  • Institute choices — five institutes with one mode; seven with both.
  • Score validity — the session’s admissions; the institutes decide how long they accept a score.

Selection process

How MAT selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
MAT — PBT or CBT (or both)120 minutes, 150 questions, five sections of 30Paper-based and computer-based tests on different dates in the same session; a candidate may take one or both and the better score is used. +1 for a correct answer, −0.25 for a wrong one; AIMA’s note for September 2026 says the overall score is based on all five sections.
Score cardWithin about a week of the CBTSection scores, the overall score and percentiles; the score card is valid for the session’s admissions and sent to the institutes chosen.
Institute selectionEach institute’s own GD and PIThe 600-plus accepting institutes apply their own cut-offs to the MAT score and run their own group discussion and interview; AIMA does not run admissions.

Registration to admission

How MAT runs, from the AIMA registration to the PBT or CBT, the score card and the institutes

The steps follow the registration process and information to candidates on mat.aima.in.

The MAT process

  1. Register on mat.aima.in Create the account, verify the e-mail, and fill the form with the session, the test mode (PBT, CBT or both), a test date and two city preferences, up to five institutes for score reports (seven with both modes) and the photograph and signature.
  2. Pay the fee ₹2,300 for one mode or ₹4,000 for both, by card, net banking, UPI or Paytm wallet; the extra mode can be added later for ₹1,700.
  3. Admit card Downloaded from the portal three days before the test with the centre and timing.
  4. The test Two hours, 150 questions, five sections, in the mode chosen; the CBT in a slot of the allotted date, the PBT on OMR.
  5. Score card Published by the last week of the month with section scores, the overall score and percentiles; sent to the institutes chosen.
  6. Institute rounds Apply to the institutes with the score; each runs its own GD and PI and admission.

Exam pattern

MAT exam pattern and marking

The MAT exam pattern below is the test structure on aima.in for the September 2026 session: 150 questions in 120 minutes across five sections of 30, one mark for a correct answer and a quarter-mark deduction for a wrong one.

Intelligence and Critical Reasoning30Analytical and critical reasoning, arrangements, series, syllogisms
Mathematical Skills30Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, modern maths
Data Analysis and Sufficiency30Tables, graphs, caselets, data sufficiency
Economic and Business Environment30Current affairs, business and economy, general knowledge

Rules.
ItemDetail
Marking+1 correct; −0.25 wrong; 0 blank
Overall scoreBased on all five sections (AIMA’s September 2026 note); institutes may weight sections differently
ModesPBT and CBT on different dates; the better score counts if both are taken
SessionsFebruary, May, September and December, with occasional special drives

Forty-eight seconds a question

The 2026 structure is shorter than the old 200-question paper but faster per question, and AIMA now counts all five sections in the overall score, so the Economic and Business Environment section can no longer be left for the end.

Study plan

How to prepare for MAT

MAT is an entry-level aptitude test held several times a year, so it fits around the other MBA tests: the CAT preparation covers four of its five sections, the fifth needs the year’s business news, and the choice of session and mode is the strategy.

Four-week plan for a MAT session.
WeeksWorkOutput
1–2Section drills of 30 questions in 24 minutes in the four aptitude sections; economic and business news of the year for the fifthAccuracy above 80 per cent
3Two full 150-question mocks with −0.25Attempt plan by section
4Test in the mode chosen; second mode if the score is below the target institute’s cut-offScore card to five or seven institutes

What high scorers do

  • They take both modes when the target is a top MAT college — the better score counts and the second test comes with the first’s experience.
  • They prepare the business-environment section — thirty questions that count in the overall score and need only a month of reading.
  • They pick the session by the institute deadline — September and December scores serve the same admission year.

Questions

MAT — FAQs

How often is MAT conducted?

Several times a year, which is its most useful feature for a candidate and the one most often under-used. Multiple cycles mean an early attempt is genuine calibration rather than a decisive event, and the gap between cycles is long enough for targeted work on whichever section proved weakest. Different cycles have also offered computer-based, internet-based and paper-based delivery, letting candidates choose the mode that suits them.

How does MAT compare with CAT?

MAT questions are generally more approachable and its timing considerably more generous, so a candidate prepared for CAT should find the aptitude sections comfortable. MAT also has a full data analysis and sufficiency section, where data sufficiency is a distinct question type CAT does not use, and it adds the business environment section. It is accepted by a wide set of institutions, though typically not the ones that shortlist primarily on CAT.

Do I need a separate preparation for MAT?

No. Any conventional management-entrance preparation covers the four aptitude sections, and the distinguishing business environment section rewards a daily business newspaper rather than a dedicated study plan. The two additions worth making are data sufficiency practice, since it constitutes a full section here with a technique of its own, and a deliberate decision to use more than one of the annual cycles rather than treating a single attempt as final.

What are the MAT September 2026 dates?

The paper-based test is on 13 September 2026 (registration closed 7 September, admit cards from 10 September) and the computer-based test on 20 September (registration to 14 September, admit cards from 17 September), after a paper-based special drive on 6 September; results are due by the last week of September. The December 2026 session follows.

What is the MAT exam pattern?

150 questions in 120 minutes across five sections of 30 — Language Comprehension, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, and Economic and Business Environment — with one mark for a correct answer and 0.25 deducted for a wrong one, in paper-based or computer-based mode. Older guides describing 200 questions in 150 minutes are out of date.

What is the MAT fee?

₹2,300 for one mode (PBT or CBT) and ₹4,000 for both modes in the same session, paid online; the second mode can be added later for ₹1,700. Both-mode candidates may send scores to seven institutes instead of five.

Who is eligible for MAT?

Graduates in any discipline from a recognised university, or final-year students, with no age limit and no restriction on the number of sessions attempted.

Is there negative marking in MAT?

Yes — a quarter of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer against one mark for a correct one, in every section.

Can I take MAT in both modes?

Yes — a candidate may register for both the paper-based and the computer-based test in the same session for ₹4,000, and the better score is used; the two tests are on different dates.

Are there free MAT mock tests?

Yes. The free MAT mock tests here follow the September 2026 structure — 150 questions in five sections of 30, 120 minutes, +1 and −0.25 — and report the overall score with a section-wise break-up.
