RRB JE 2026 Exam Date (CBT 1: 27, 28 and 30 October), Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Vacancies and Free Mock Tests

RRB JE recruits Junior Engineers, Depot Material Superintendents and Chemical and Metallurgical Assistants across the railway network. It asks for an engineering diploma or degree, and it is the technical counterpart to NTPC — same conducting boards, same deduction rate, entirely different centre of gravity.

That centre of gravity is the Technical Abilities section of the second computer-based test: a hundred marks out of a hundred and fifty, drawn from your own engineering discipline. Everything else in the exam is a supporting act.

What changed from the 2025 notification

The scheme of CBT 1 and CBT 2, the 15-times shortlist and the 1:1 verification ratio are carried over from CEN 05/2025; the 2026 notice adds the discipline-to-exam-group mapping for CMA by corrigendum and reckons age on 1 January 2027. The CBT 1 date is published as a tentative schedule — 27, 28 and 30 October 2026, about ten weeks after the notification, against four months in the 2025 cycle.

Overview

What RRB JE is, and who it suits

Junior Engineers in the railways work across civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and signal and telecommunication departments — maintaining track and structures, rolling stock, traction systems and the signalling network that governs train movement. Related posts filled through the same examination include Depot Material Superintendent in the stores organisation and Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant in the research and testing function.

Eligibility rests on an engineering diploma or degree in a discipline relevant to the post applied for, and the mapping between qualification and post is set out in detail in the notification. That mapping matters, because the Technical Abilities paper you sit is determined by the discipline group your post belongs to.

How the two stages divide

  • CBT 1 — mathematics, general intelligence and reasoning, general awareness and general science. A screening paper with no technical content at all.
  • CBT 2 — general awareness, physics and chemistry, basics of computers and applications, basics of environment and pollution control, and Technical Abilities — which alone carries two thirds of the paper.

Check the qualification-to-post mapping carefully

Which posts your diploma or degree makes you eligible for, and which Technical Abilities syllabus you will therefore sit, is set out post by post and discipline by discipline in the notification. Applying against a post your qualification does not map to is a wasted cycle, and the mapping is not always intuitive.

Eligibility

Who can apply for RRB JE

Eligibility is judged as on 13 September 2026, the closing date, for qualification and as on 1 January 2027 for age, and verified with originals at document verification. Each post specifies the discipline of the diploma or degree it accepts, and your qualification determines the exam group whose technical paper you answer in CBT 2.

Qualification and exam group, summarised from the notification. Annexure A gives the exact discipline for each post; a three-year diploma or a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology in a mapped discipline is the standard requirement.
Exam groupDisciplines mapped to it
Mechanical and allied engineeringMechanical, production, automobile, manufacturing, mechatronics, industrial, machining, tools and machining, tools and die making, and combinations of their sub-streams
Electrical and allied engineeringElectrical and combinations of its sub-streams
Electronics and allied engineeringElectronics, instrumentation and control, communication, computer science and engineering, computer engineering, computer science, information technology and combinations
Civil and allied engineeringCivil and combinations of its sub-streams
Computer science and IT; printing; CMA and DMS groupsAs mapped in the notification and corrigendum — DMS accepts any three-year engineering diploma; CMA requires a science degree or engineering qualification per the corrigendum’s mapping
Age 18–33 years as on 1 January 2027, with relaxations of the upper limit.
CategoryRelaxation
SC and ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years

Widows, divorced and judicially separated women not remarriedUp to 35 years (38 OBC, 40 SC/ST)

Other conditions

  • Fee — The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  • Medical — Standards by post in Annexure A — B1 for CMA and most JE posts, with the other standards as listed for each post; examined after verification.
  • One RRB — Apply to one RRB and rank its posts and zones; multiple applications are all rejected. Candidates with qualifications not in the mapping who are eligible for DMS choose an exam group at registration.

Selection process

How RRB JE selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
CBT 1 — first stage, common to all postsObjective, 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutesMathematics 30 questions, General Intelligence and Reasoning 25, General Awareness 15 and General Science 30, one mark each, with one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer. A screening test: normalised marks shortlist 15 times the community-wise vacancies of the RRB for CBT 2 and are not counted afterwards.
CBT 2 — second stage, by exam groupObjective, 150 questions, 150 marks, 120 minutesGeneral Awareness 15, Physics and Chemistry 15, Basics of Computers and Applications 10, Basics of Environment and Pollution Control 10, and Technical Abilities 100 questions in the exam group chosen at application — civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science and IT, printing, or the CMA and DMS groups. One third of a mark deducted per wrong answer. Normalised CBT 2 marks are the merit list.
Document verification and medical examinationOne candidate per vacancyCandidates equal to the vacancies are shortlisted on CBT 2 merit with post and zone preferences, produce the diploma or degree, age, category and other certificates in original, and undergo the medical examination at the standard set for the post in Annexure A (B1 for CMA and most JE posts; others as listed). Zones and production units are allotted by merit and preference.

Application to appointment

How to apply for RRB JE, what CBT 1 and CBT 2 involve, and how posts and zones are allotted

The steps in the order they happen, with the fees and rules CEN 04/2026 specifies.

The RRB JE process, from account to appointment

  1. Create an account on rrbapply.gov.in One account serves every RRB notification: mobile number, e-mail, name, parents’ names and date of birth exactly as on the matriculation certificate, and Aadhaar verification. Details in the account form — and the RRB chosen — cannot be changed later, even in the paid modification window, so they must be right at this step.
  2. Choose one RRB and rank the posts You apply to one Railway Recruitment Board only, and are examined and considered against that RRB’s vacancies; a second application to any RRB cancels all of them. Inside the chosen RRB you rank every post and zone you are eligible for and willing to join — posts left without a preference are treated as declined, and preferences are final.
  3. Fill the form with a live photograph The form asks for qualification, category and the certificates you will produce at verification, captures a live photograph through the webcam or phone camera at the time of application, and takes uploads of the photograph, signature and any category certificates to the CEN’s specification.
  4. Pay the fee The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  5. Use the modification window if you must A ten-day window opens after applications close in which any field other than the account details and the chosen RRB can be corrected on payment of ₹250 per occasion, which is not refunded.
  6. Application status, city intimation, then the e-call letter The RRBs publish a notice for checking whether your application was accepted. About ten days before your date the exam city and date, and the travel authority for SC and ST candidates, become visible in the login; the e-call letter itself is released about four days before the examination. Aadhaar-linked biometric authentication is done at the centre, so carry the original Aadhaar card and the same photo identity document named in the application, and keep Aadhaar biometrics unlocked.
  7. The computer-based test Objective questions in the language chosen at application, with a separate scribe-eligible duration. There is no sectional timing; the whole paper is one clock. Mock tests to familiarise candidates with the interface are put on the RRB website before the examination.
  8. Results, scores and the objection tracker After each CBT the question paper, responses and provisional answer key are opened in the login with an objection window; results are published RRB by RRB as PDF lists of roll numbers with category-wise normalised cut-offs, and individual scores can be viewed in the login for a limited period.
  9. CBT 1 result and the 15-times shortlist Each RRB publishes the roll numbers shortlisted for CBT 2 — 15 times the community-wise vacancies notified against it, on normalised marks above the minimum qualifying percentage, considering post preferences — with cut-offs, and opens individual scores in the login. Candidates who used a reservation continue in that category.
  10. CBT 2 in your exam group One hundred and fifty questions in two hours, of which 100 are technical abilities in the exam group fixed by your qualification at application. Normalised CBT 2 marks are the merit list.
  11. Document verification, medical and allotment Candidates equal to the vacancies are called on CBT 2 merit with post and zone preferences; ties go to the older candidate, then alphabetical order. Originals of the diploma or degree with date of issue or semester mark sheets, age, category and NOC where employed are verified, the medical examination follows, and the RRB allots the zone or production unit by merit and preference. The railway issues the appointment as Junior Engineer on Level 6.

The exam group is fixed at application

Your technical paper in CBT 2 is the group mapped to the discipline you enter, and it cannot be changed later. Candidates with combined or unusual disciplines should read Annexure A and the discipline chart in para 13.3 before choosing, because a wrong group is a wrong paper.

Exam pattern

RRB JE exam pattern and marking

The RRB JE exam pattern below is the scheme in CEN 04/2026. CBT 1 is common to every post and screens; CBT 2 is set by exam group with two thirds of its marks on technical abilities and is the merit list. One third of a mark is deducted per wrong answer in both. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

RRB JE CBT 1 exam pattern: 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes (120 with a scribe); one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer; screening only. Section split indicative.

ST25% (30% in the Level 1 examination)

One third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer in every computer-based test; an unattempted question costs nothing. Where a test runs in more than one shift, marks are normalised across shifts by the RRBs’ published formula, and it is the normalised score — not the raw mark — that is compared with the cut-off and used for shortlisting. Fifteen times the community-wise vacancies are shortlisted for CBT 2 and candidates equal to the vacancies for verification.

Study plan

How to prepare for RRB JE

JE is decided by the 100 technical questions in CBT 2 — two thirds of the paper that builds the merit — so the plan is your engineering discipline first and the general sections as support. CBT 1 is a screen at diploma level with general science and mathematics as its scoring half.

A five-month plan

  1. Months 1–2: the technical syllabus of your exam group Work through the exam-group syllabus in Annexure VIII topic by topic with previous years’ technical questions alongside — the strength of materials, fluids, machines, thermodynamics and production sequence for mechanical; circuits, machines, measurement, power systems and electronics for electrical; surveying, building materials, soils, hydraulics, RCC and steel, estimating and transportation for civil.
  2. Month 3: CBT 1 general sections Arithmetic and algebra to speed, the reasoning families, class-10 science and a general awareness spine with current affairs; a 100-question, 90-minute mock every week.
  3. Month 4: CBT 2 mocks and the small sections A 150-question, two-hour mock every week with a third off per error and an error log by topic; the 50 non-technical marks — physics and chemistry to class 10, computer basics, environment and pollution control, general awareness — revised from short notes because they are recall.
  4. Month 5: revision and the examination Formula sheets and the error log; taper mocks in the final ten days; confirm the exam group and preferences you submitted.

What the pattern means for the attempt

  • CBT 2: 100 technical questions in about 80 minutes — Leave the 50 general questions 40 minutes and give the technical section the rest; accuracy at a third off per error decides the merit.
  • CBT 1: science and mathematics are 60 of 100 — The two most learnable sections; a strong score there clears the 15-times shortlist comfortably.
  • The environment and computer sections are cheap marks — Twenty questions from a short, fixed syllabus; do not skip them for lack of glamour.

Questions

RRB JE — FAQs

How much of RRB JE is technical?

Two thirds of the paper that decides your rank. Technical Abilities carries 100 of the 150 marks in CBT 2, drawn from your own engineering discipline, while CBT 1 contains no technical content at all and is purely a screening stage whose marks do not enter the merit. This is why technical revision should start first and take the majority of your preparation time, even though the first paper you sit contains none of it.

Are the small sections in RRB JE CBT 2 worth preparing?

Yes, and they are among the best-value marks in the exam. Basics of computers and applications and basics of environment and pollution control carry ten marks each from short, well-defined syllabi that can each be covered in about a fortnight. Twenty marks for a month of light study compares very favourably with the effort needed for an equivalent gain in the technical section, yet candidates concentrating on their discipline routinely skip them.

How long does RRB JE preparation take?

Around six months for a candidate rebuilding technical knowledge from some years back, and considerably less for a recent diploma or degree holder whose material is still current. The technical section is the long pole — it is diploma-scale in volume and carries a hundred marks in the merit paper — so it should start first, guided by a topic weighting table built from past papers in your own discipline.

What is the RRB JE 2026 notification date and vacancy?

CEN 04/2026 was published on 13 August 2026 with 3,993 Junior Engineer and Depot Material Superintendent vacancies; corrigendum 1 of 18 August added one JE (Electrical/TRS) post at Secunderabad and 35 Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant posts. Applications ran from 14 August to 13 September 2026, fee payment closed on 15 September and the modification window runs from 16 to 25 September. CBT 1 is tentatively on 27, 28 and 30 October 2026 under the notice of 16 September; the CBT 2 date is to be notified.

What is the RRB JE exam pattern for 2026?

CBT 1: 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes — Mathematics 30, General Intelligence and Reasoning 25, General Awareness 15, General Science 30 — common to all posts and used only to shortlist 15 times the vacancies. CBT 2: 150 questions for 150 marks in 120 minutes — General Awareness 15, Physics and Chemistry 15, Basics of Computers 10, Basics of Environment and Pollution Control 10 and Technical Abilities 100 in the exam group fixed by your qualification — which builds the merit list. One third of a mark is deducted per wrong answer in both, with minimum marks of 40 per cent for UR and EWS, 30 for OBC and SC and 25 for ST.

What is the RRB JE syllabus?

CBT 1 covers mathematics (number system, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics), reasoning (series, analogies, coding, syllogism, Venn diagrams, data interpretation, decision making), general awareness and general science to class 10. CBT 2 adds physics and chemistry to class 10, computer basics (architecture, devices, storage, networking, operating systems, MS Office, internet and e-mail, viruses), environment and pollution control basics, and 100 technical questions from the syllabus of your exam group in Annexure VIII — civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science and IT, printing, CMA or DMS. The full topic list is on the syllabus page.

Who is eligible for RRB JE 2026?

A three-year diploma or a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology in the discipline mapped to the post in Annexure A — mechanical and allied, electrical, electronics and computer, civil and allied streams, with DMS open to any three-year engineering diploma — as on 13 September 2026, and an age of 18 to 33 as on 1 January 2027 with five years’ relaxation for SC and ST, three for OBC, ten to fifteen for PwBD and service plus three to eight years for ex-servicemen. The fee is ₹500 with ₹400 refunded on appearing in CBT 1, or ₹250 fully refunded for the exempted categories.

What is the RRB JE salary?

Junior Engineer, Depot Material Superintendent and Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant are all in Pay Level 6 of the 7th CPC matrix with initial pay of ₹35,400, plus dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and the railway’s other allowances according to the place of posting.

When is the RRB JE 2026 exam?

CBT 1 is tentatively on 27, 28 and 30 October 2026, under the RRBs’ notice of 16 September 2026; the exam city and date become visible about ten days before and the e-call letter four days before, and the CBT 2 date will be notified after the CBT 1 result. In the previous cycle, CEN 05/2025 was notified on 28 October 2025, CBT 1 was held on 19, 20 and 25 February 2026, the result came on 8 May, CBT 2 on 2 July and the CBT 2 result with the document-verification shortlist on 16 September 2026.

Is there negative marking in RRB JE?

Yes — one third of a mark for every wrong answer in both CBT 1 and CBT 2, with no deduction for unattempted questions. Marks are normalised across shifts before cut-offs and shortlists are applied.
