Railway Current Affairs

General awareness is the largest section in both stages of RRB NTPC and the largest in the RPF paper, which makes it the most consequential section in railway recruitment — and the one most often mis-weighted by candidates arriving from SSC or banking preparation.

It also carries a recognisable railway seam. Transport systems, public sector organisations, government programmes and the railway network itself appear more often than a general competitive-exam guide would suggest.

Railway current affairs — September 2026

Current affairs for RRB NTPC, Group D, ALP and JE this month

RRB general awareness asks about eight to twelve current questions per paper, in the SSC style — a winner, a satellite, a theme, a summit venue — and rarely the issue behind it. The items below are those.

September 2026 — checked 19 September 2026 at the sources named in each row.
DateWhat happenedWhy it is asked

At Bengaluru on 18 September 2026, in the presence of the Defence Minister and the Civil Aviation Minister, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited handed over to the Indian Air Force two Light Combat Aircraft Tejas twin-seat trainers in the final operational clearance standard — the last two under the FOC contract — and three HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft, and delivered four Dhruv-NG helicopters to Pawan Hans, the first civil-certified version of the indigenous helicopter. The aircraft names, the maker, the receiving forces and the “last two under the FOC contract” are the details questions draw on. (joinindiannavy.gov.in, 18 September 2026.)
17–19 SeptemberSEMICON India 2026 opened at Yashobhoomi on the theme “Silicon to Systems”. The Prime Minister inaugurated the fifth SEMICON India on 17 September 2026 at Yashobhoomi, Dwarka, New Delhi, organised by the India Semiconductor Mission, MeitY and SEMI on the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem” and running to 19 September: more than 600 companies from 52 countries, six country pavilions (Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden), twelve state pavilions and a “Sand to Silicon to Systems” value-chain walk-through. Twelve projects stand approved under the Semicon India programme and three of the first-phase units have begun commercial production.Edition, venue, theme, organisers and the six pavilion countries are asked; so is the count of approved projects. (Prime Minister’s Office note of 16 September 2026; inauguration confirmed by agreeing reports of 17 September.)

It brings more than 51 lakh additional employees under EPF, EPS and EDLI, with a five-year central outlay of ₹56,696 crore. The new ceiling, the effective date, the 51 lakh figure and the three schemes (EPF, EPS, EDLI) are the examinable parts. (PIB / pmindia.gov.in, 16 September 2026.)
16 SeptemberWorld Ozone Day 2026 marked ten years of the Kigali Amendment. The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on 16 September 2026 carried the theme “Global action for a cooler planet — celebrating 10 years of sustainable cooling under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol”. The Kigali Amendment of 2016 phases down hydrofluorocarbons; the Montreal Protocol itself was signed on 16 September 1987.Theme, the Kigali Amendment’s year and purpose, and the Montreal Protocol date are the recurring questions. The notification settles the question of a merchant discount rate on small digital payments: person-to-person transfers of any value and merchant payments up to ₹2,000 stay free, while charges become possible above that line. The threshold (₹2,000), the statute and section (PSS Act s.10A), the two modes named and the date are the examinable details; the RuPay exemption carries no upper limit. (Ministry of Finance notification of 14 September 2026, as reported by SCC Online and agreeing reports (the e-Gazette copy was not retrieved).)

(Government of India observances.)
14 SeptemberNTA confirmed NEET 2027 will be a computer-based test. The NTA Director General confirmed on 14 September 2026 that NEET UG moves to computer-based testing from the 2027 cycle, following the Education Minister’s announcement of 15 May and NTA’s letter of 4 September asking AICTE to map CBT centres; the 180-question, 720-mark, +4/−1 pattern is expected to carry over. The mode change, the year and the committee behind it (Radhakrishnan Committee, 2024) are the examinable facts. 4 SeptemberGSLV-F17 launched EOS-05, India’s first geosynchronous imaging satellite. In the early hours of 4 September 2026 GSLV-F17, the 19th GSLV flight, lifted the 2,367-kg EOS-05 (GISAT-1A) from the second launch pad at Sriharikota into a transfer orbit from which the satellite raises itself to geosynchronous orbit at about 36,000 km. EOS-05 is India’s first imaging satellite designed to work from geosynchronous orbit, for near-real-time imagery in disaster, cyclone, agriculture and weather monitoring, and it was ISRO’s first successful launch of 2026 after the PSLV-C62 failure of 12 January.Vehicle, satellite name, orbit type and the “first” are the facts; the 2021 loss of EOS-03 on GSLV-F10 is the natural comparison question. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation named three laureates for the 68th awards on 31 August 2026, the birth anniversary of the former Philippine President: Singapore’s diplomat Tommy Koh, who chaired the negotiations that produced the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea; Bangladesh’s Runa Khan, for humanitarian work among river and climate-vulnerable communities; and Myanmar’s Bo Kyi, for human-rights work. The weighting

Why general awareness decides railway papers

In RRB NTPC, general awareness is forty of a hundred questions in the first stage and fifty of a hundred and twenty in the second — together more than either mathematics or reasoning. In RPF it is fifty of a hundred and twenty. That inverts the usual competitive-exam priority, and a candidate allocating study time by habit rather than by weighting will under-prepare the section that carries the most marks.

What railway general awareness covers

  • Indian history, geography and polity — the standard themes, at the level of a general awareness section.
  • General science at class 10 level — finite and reliably examined, as in SSC papers.
  • Transport systems and public sector organisations — a railway-adjacent seam that general guides tend to under-cover.
  • Government programmes and flagship schemes — consistently asked.
  • Sports, awards, art and culture — the standard static categories.
  • Current events — national and international, weighted towards schemes and appointments.

Planning

Allocating time to the largest section

  1. Give general awareness forty minutes a day. Matching its share of the paper rather than your habits from other exams.
  2. Cover class 10 science completely. A bounded body of content that appears reliably.
  3. Build themed sheets from past RRB papers. The recurring themes, including the transport and public sector seam, become a short revisable list.
  4. Revise weekly, test yourself rather than re-reading. Recall-based material responds to retrieval, not exposure.

Questions

Railway Current Affairs — FAQs

How important is general awareness in railway exams?

It is the largest section in RRB NTPC — forty of a hundred questions in CBT 1 and fifty of a hundred and twenty in CBT 2 — and the largest in the RPF paper at fifty of a hundred and twenty. Together that is more than either mathematics or reasoning contributes, which inverts the usual competitive-exam priority and makes it the most consequential section in railway recruitment.

Is there railway-specific content in RRB general awareness?

Yes, a recognisable seam of it. Transport systems in India, public sector organisations, the railway network itself and government programmes appear more often than a general competitive-exam guide would suggest. Past RRB papers are the practical way to identify it, since general study material tends to under-cover exactly this material.

How should I allocate study time for railway exams?

In proportion to the marks, which means giving general awareness the largest share — around forty minutes daily — rather than following the habits formed in SSC or banking preparation where quantitative aptitude dominates. Within that, cover class 10 science completely since it is finite and reliably examined, and build themed sheets from past RRB papers so that the recurring topics, including the transport and public sector seam, become a short revisable list.
