RRB ALP 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Vacancies and Free Mock Tests

RRB ALP recruits Assistant Loco Pilots — the people who operate trains alongside the loco pilot and progress into that role. It requires an ITI qualification or an engineering diploma in a relevant trade, and it has a selection process with two features no other railway recruitment shares in the same form.

The first is a trade-specific Part B paper that is qualifying but genuinely technical. The second is the computer-based aptitude test, which assesses psychological suitability for train operation and applies a minimum standard in every test battery, with no relaxation available. It ends more candidacies than the written papers do.

What is fixed and what is not

The pattern, the 15-times and 8-times shortlists, the 50:50 merit and the A-1 medical standard are in the notification. The CBT 1 date is not: it is published as a tentative schedule on the RRB websites with city intimation ten days and e-call letters four days before the examination. Prepare to the 2025 timeline — CBT 1 roughly nine to ten months after the notification — and watch the portal.

Overview

What RRB ALP is, and who it suits

An Assistant Loco Pilot works in the locomotive cab, supporting the loco pilot and progressing through experience into that role. It is a safety-critical operational post, and the selection process reflects that: technical competence is assessed through a trade paper, and psychological suitability for the demands of train operation is assessed through a dedicated aptitude test.

Eligibility rests on a class 10 pass together with an ITI qualification in a relevant trade, or an engineering diploma in a relevant discipline. The trade you hold determines which Part B paper you sit in the second computer-based test, so the qualification is not merely an entry ticket — it shapes the exam you take.

The four filters, in order

  • CBT 1 — a short screening paper of mathematics, mental ability, general science and current affairs.
  • CBT 2 Part A — the merit-counting paper — mathematics, reasoning, basic science and engineering, and general awareness.
  • CBT 2 Part B — trade-specific and qualifying. Technical, and drawn from your ITI or diploma trade.
  • Computer-based aptitude test — psychological suitability for train operation, with a minimum standard in every battery and no relaxation available.

The vision standard is the strictest in railway recruitment

Assistant Loco Pilot is classified at the highest medical standard the railways apply, with demanding requirements for distant and near vision, colour perception and binocular vision. Spectacles are not permitted under this classification. This is worth verifying at the very start of your preparation, because it is not something that can be addressed later and it arrives after every other stage has been cleared.

Eligibility

Who can apply for RRB ALP

Eligibility is judged as on 14 June 2026, the closing date, for qualification and as on 1 July 2026 for age, and verified with originals at document verification; a candidate awaiting a final result on the closing date is not eligible. The medical standard is the strictest on the railways and cannot be met with glasses or after corrective surgery — check it before you apply.

Qualification, from Annexure A

  • ITI route — Class 10 or SSLC plus ITI from an NCVT or SCVT institution in Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Millwright or Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio and TV), Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, Armature and Coil Winder, Mechanic (Diesel), Heat Engine, Turner, Machinist, or Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanic.
  • Apprenticeship route — Class 10 or SSLC plus a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the trades above.
  • Diploma or degree route — Class 10 or SSLC plus a three-year diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering, or a combination of those streams, from a recognised institution; a degree in the same disciplines is accepted in lieu of the diploma.
Age 18–30 years as on 1 July 2026 — born between 2 July 1996 and 1 July 2008 — with relaxations of the upper limit; the largest applicable relaxation applies, not a sum.

Medical standard A-1 and other conditions

  • Vision — Distant vision 6/6, 6/6 without glasses with the fogging test (must not accept +2D); near vision Sn 0.6, 0.6 without glasses; normal colour vision, binocular vision, field of vision, night vision and mesopic vision. Candidates who have had LASIK or other refractive surgery are not eligible and sign a declaration to that effect.
  • General fitness — Physically fit in all respects; no speech impediment, hearing impairment, psychiatric or neurological disorder, diabetes or the other conditions in the self-screening declaration that is certified by an eye specialist and produced at the CBAT.
  • Fee — The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  • One RRB — Apply to one RRB and rank its zones and posts; multiple applications are all rejected.

Selection process

How RRB ALP selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
CBT 1 — first stageObjective, 75 questions, 75 marks, 60 minutesMathematics, Mental Ability, General Science and General Awareness on Current Affairs, one mark each, with one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer. A screening test only: normalised marks shortlist 15 times the RRB’s vacancies for CBT 2 and are not counted afterwards.
CBT 2 — second stage, Part A and Part BObjective, 175 questions, 2 hours 30 minutesPart A: 100 questions in 90 minutes on Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and Basic Science and Engineering — the marks that count. Part B: 75 questions in 60 minutes from the DGT syllabus of the candidate’s ITI trade (diploma and degree holders choose a trade for their discipline), qualifying at 35 per cent for everyone. One third of a mark deducted per wrong answer in both parts.
Computer-based aptitude test (CBAT)Psychological test batteries, no negative markingEight times the vacancies per community are called on Part A marks, provided they qualified Part B, and must bring a self-screening medical declaration certified by an eye specialist. A T-score of 42 in every test battery is needed to qualify; the test is in English and Hindi only. Guidance is on the RDSO psychology pages.
Document verification and medical examinationMerit 50:50, one candidate per vacancyThe merit list is drawn RRB-wise from CBAT qualifiers with CBT 2 Part A marks and CBAT scores weighted 50:50, and candidates equal to the vacancies are called for verification and the A-1 medical: 6/6 distant vision without glasses with the fogging test, near vision Sn 0.6, and colour, binocular, night and mesopic vision, with no LASIK or corrective surgery. Zones are allotted by merit and preference.

Application to appointment

How to apply for RRB ALP, what the two CBTs and the aptitude test involve, and how the 50:50 merit is built

The steps in the order they happen, with the fees and rules CEN 01/2026 specifies.

The RRB ALP process, from account to appointment

  1. Create an account on rrbapply.gov.in One account serves every RRB notification: mobile number, e-mail, name, parents’ names and date of birth exactly as on the matriculation certificate, and Aadhaar verification. Details in the account form — and the RRB chosen — cannot be changed later, even in the paid modification window, so they must be right at this step.
  2. Choose one RRB and rank the posts You apply to one Railway Recruitment Board only, and are examined and considered against that RRB’s vacancies; a second application to any RRB cancels all of them. Inside the chosen RRB you rank every post and zone you are eligible for and willing to join — posts left without a preference are treated as declined, and preferences are final.
  3. Fill the form with a live photograph The form asks for qualification, category and the certificates you will produce at verification, captures a live photograph through the webcam or phone camera at the time of application, and takes uploads of the photograph, signature and any category certificates to the CEN’s specification.
  4. Pay the fee The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  5. Use the modification window if you must A ten-day window opens after applications close in which any field other than the account details and the chosen RRB can be corrected on payment of ₹250 per occasion, which is not refunded.
  6. Application status, city intimation, then the e-call letter The RRBs publish a notice for checking whether your application was accepted. About ten days before your date the exam city and date, and the travel authority for SC and ST candidates, become visible in the login; the e-call letter itself is released about four days before the examination. Aadhaar-linked biometric authentication is done at the centre, so carry the original Aadhaar card and the same photo identity document named in the application, and keep Aadhaar biometrics unlocked.
  7. The computer-based test Objective questions in the language chosen at application, with a separate scribe-eligible duration. There is no sectional timing; the whole paper is one clock. Mock tests to familiarise candidates with the interface are put on the RRB website before the examination.
  8. Results, scores and the objection tracker After each CBT the question paper, responses and provisional answer key are opened in the login with an objection window; results are published RRB by RRB as PDF lists of roll numbers with category-wise normalised cut-offs, and individual scores can be viewed in the login for a limited period.
  9. CBT 1 result and the 15-times shortlist Each RRB publishes the roll numbers shortlisted for CBT 2 — 15 times its vacancies, RRB- and community-wise on normalised marks, above the minimum qualifying percentage — with category cut-offs; ties at the cut-off are all shortlisted. Candidates who used a reservation are considered only in that category thereafter.
  10. CBT 2: Part A counts, Part B must be passed Part A and Part B are held in one sitting of two and a half hours. Only Part A marks shortlist for the CBAT and count in the merit, provided the candidate scores 35 per cent in Part B, which is set from the DGT syllabus of the trade chosen at application.
  11. CBAT with the medical self-declaration Eight times the vacancies per community are called on Part A marks. Bring the self-screening medical declaration (Annexures VIII A and B) certified by an eye specialist, without which entry is refused. Every battery must be cleared separately at a T-score of 42; there is no negative marking and no relaxation.
  12. Merit, verification, medical and zone allotment The merit list is drawn RRB-wise from CBAT qualifiers with CBT 2 Part A and CBAT weighted 50:50; ties go to the older candidate, then alphabetical order of first name. Candidates equal to the vacancies are called with originals and undergo the A-1 medical examination; zones and production units are allotted by merit and the preferences given at application.

Get the eyes checked before the fee

The A-1 standard — unaided 6/6 with the fogging test, no refractive surgery ever — ends more ALP candidacies at the medical stage than any written cut-off. An eye specialist can tell you in one visit whether you meet it; the notification’s Annexure VIII is the checklist.

Exam pattern

RRB ALP exam pattern and marking

The RRB ALP exam pattern below is the scheme in CEN 01/2026. CBT 1 screens; CBT 2 Part A carries half the final merit and Part B is a trade test to be passed; the CBAT carries the other half. One third of a mark is deducted per wrong answer in both CBTs and none in the CBAT. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

RRB ALP CBT 1 exam pattern: 75 questions, 75 marks, 60 minutes; one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer; screening only.

StageRule
CBT 1 → CBT 215 times the RRB’s vacancies, RRB- and community-wise, on normalised marks
CBT 2 → CBAT8 times the vacancies per community on Part A marks, subject to passing Part B
CBATT-score of 42 in every battery; no negative marking; English and Hindi only
Final meritCBT 2 Part A 50 per cent + CBAT 50 per cent; candidates equal to vacancies called for verification and A-1 medical
Minimum qualifying marks that apply before any shortlisting, in every CBT.
CategoryMinimum marks
UR and EWS40%
OBC (non-creamy layer)30%
SC30%
ST25% (30% in the Level 1 examination)

One third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer in every computer-based test; an unattempted question costs nothing. Where a test runs in more than one shift, marks are normalised across shifts by the RRBs’ published formula, and it is the normalised score — not the raw mark — that is compared with the cut-off and used for shortlisting.

Study plan

How to prepare for RRB ALP

ALP is decided in CBT 2 Part A and the CBAT, which carry half the merit each. Part A is the ALP-specific paper — Basic Science and Engineering alongside mathematics and reasoning — and the CBAT is a psychological test you can prepare for only by practising its formats. CBT 1 is a screen, and Part B is your own trade at ITI level.

A six-month plan

  1. Months 1–2: CBT 1 breadth Arithmetic and the mental ability families to speed; class-10 science; a current affairs routine. Sit a 75-question, 60-minute mock at the end of month one.
  2. Months 3–4: Part A depth and Part B revision Basic Science and Engineering topic by topic — engineering drawing projections and views, units, density, work and power, heat, basic electricity, levers, safety, environment, IT literacy — with mathematics and reasoning at Part A level; revise the DGT syllabus of your trade for Part B.
  3. Month 5: full mocks A CBT 1 mock every second day and a CBT 2 mock every week on the 90 + 60 minute format, scored with a third off per error, and an error log. Read the RDSO CBAT guidelines and practise each battery format weekly.
  4. Month 6: revision, eyes and the examination Revise from notes and the error log; get the A-1 vision check done and the self-screening declaration ready; taper mocks in the last ten days.

What the pattern means for the attempt

  • Part A: 100 questions in 90 minutes — Fifty-four seconds each with a third off per error; attempt what you are sure of and leave the rest.
  • Part B: pass it, do not chase it — Thirty-five per cent qualifies and the marks are not counted; time spent beyond a safe pass is better spent on Part A.
  • CBAT: practice the formats — Memory, following directions, depth perception, concentration and perceptual speed batteries reward familiarity, and a T-score of 42 in each is mandatory.

Questions

RRB ALP — FAQs

Is CBT 2 Part B important if it is only qualifying?

Yes. Qualifying means the marks do not add to your merit position, not that the paper is optional — failing to reach the prescribed standard ends your attempt exactly as a merit-paper failure would. Because it is trade-specific and general exam guides do not cover it, it is the most under-prepared stage in ALP recruitment. Past trade papers in your own trade, worked alongside your ITI or diploma material, are the direct fix.

What are the vision requirements for RRB ALP?

Assistant Loco Pilot carries the strictest medical classification the railways apply, with demanding distant and near vision, colour perception and binocular vision requirements, and spectacles are not permitted under it. Because the medical examination comes after every other stage, a candidate can clear the written papers and the aptitude test and still be found ineligible. Verify the standard against the current notification before committing months of preparation.

What is the RRB ALP 2026 notification date and vacancy?

CEN 01/2026 was published on 14 May 2026 with 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot vacancies across 21 RRBs — UR 4,611, SC 1,767, ST 913, OBC 2,828 and EWS 1,008, with 1,114 reserved for ex-servicemen. Applications ran from 15 May to 14 June 2026 with modification from 17 to 26 June. The CBT 1 date is to be notified. The 2025 cycle, CEN 01/2025, was raised to 10,970 vacancies and is at the CBT 2 stage.

What is the RRB ALP exam pattern for 2026?

CBT 1: 75 questions for 75 marks in 60 minutes on mathematics, mental ability, general science and current affairs, screening only. CBT 2: Part A of 100 questions in 90 minutes on mathematics, reasoning and basic science and engineering, which counts, and Part B of 75 questions in 60 minutes on the candidate’s trade, qualifying at 35 per cent. Then the computer-based aptitude test, in which a T-score of 42 in every battery is required. One third of a mark is deducted per wrong answer in both CBTs and none in the CBAT. The final merit is CBT 2 Part A 50 per cent and CBAT 50 per cent.

Who is eligible for RRB ALP 2026?

Class 10 plus an ITI or act apprenticeship in a listed trade — Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Millwright, Mechanic (Radio and TV), Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, Armature and Coil Winder, Mechanic (Diesel), Heat Engine, Turner, Machinist, or Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanic — or class 10 plus a three-year diploma or a degree in mechanical, electrical, electronics or automobile engineering. Age 18 to 30 as on 1 July 2026 with the usual relaxations, and the A-1 medical standard: unaided 6/6 vision with the fogging test and no refractive surgery.

What was the RRB ALP cut-off in the last cycle?

For CEN 01/2025, RRB Chandigarh’s CBT 1 cut-offs declared on 12 June 2026 were 79.56 for UR, 73.92 for OBC, 71.28 for SC, 54.64 for ST, 54.22 for EWS and 34.65 for ex-servicemen out of 75 normalised marks. Other RRBs published their own; the minimum qualifying marks are 40 per cent for UR and EWS, 30 for OBC and SC and 25 for ST.

What is the RRB ALP salary?

Assistant Loco Pilot is in Pay Level 2 of the 7th CPC matrix with initial pay of ₹19,900, plus dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and the running allowance paid per kilometre to footplate staff, which makes the take-home considerably higher than the basic. Promotion runs to Senior ALP, Loco Pilot (Goods), Loco Pilot (Passenger) and Loco Pilot (Mail/Express).

What is the CBAT in RRB ALP, and does it have negative marking?

The computer-based aptitude test is a set of psychological test batteries — memory, following directions, depth perception, concentration, perceptual speed and similar — designed by RDSO for safety-category posts. Eight times the vacancies are called on CBT 2 Part A marks; a candidate must score a T-score of 42 in every battery separately, with no relaxation for any category and no negative marking. It is in English and Hindi only and carries 50 per cent of the final merit.

When is the RRB ALP 2026 exam?

Not yet notified. The RRBs publish a tentative CBT schedule on their websites, with the exam city and date visible ten days before and the e-call letter four days before the examination. In the 2025 cycle CBT 1 was held on 13–18 February 2026, ten months after the notification of April 2025, and CBT 2 on 28 July 2026.
