RPF Constable and SI 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, PET/PMT and Free Mock Tests

The Railway Protection Force is the armed force responsible for protecting railway property, passengers and the passenger area. Its Constable and Sub-Inspector posts are filled through a computer-based test followed by physical efficiency and measurement tests, and it sits somewhere between the railway recruitments and the police recruitments in character.

Its written paper is distinctive in one respect: general awareness is by far the largest section, larger than in any other railway examination. Candidates who arrive from SSC or banking preparation, where quantitative aptitude dominates, consistently mis-weight their study for it.

What to expect from the next notification

RPF recruits in cycles of a few years through the RRBs rather than annually. The 2024 CENs kept the 120-question CBT, the ten-times PET/PMT shortlist and the physical standards of the 2018 recruitment, so the next CEN is likely to follow them; the vacancy count, the age cut-off date and the application window are what a new notice will set. Register on rrbapply.gov.in and watch the RRB websites and the Employment News indicative notice.

Overview

What RPF is, and who it suits

The Railway Protection Force secures railway property, passenger areas and passengers themselves, with powers that extend to enforcement under railway legislation. Constables form the operational body of the force; Sub-Inspectors are the supervisory rank, requiring a bachelor’s degree rather than a class 10 pass.

Both posts are filled through the same shape of process — one computer-based test, then physical tests, then verification — with the same paper structure and the same qualifying physical standards framework, differing in the qualification required and in the standards applied.

What the process assesses

  • The computer-based test — general awareness, arithmetic, and general intelligence and reasoning, with general awareness the largest section.
  • The physical efficiency test — timed running over prescribed distances, plus long jump and high jump, with standards differing by post and gender.
  • The physical measurement test — height and, for male candidates, chest measurement with expansion, against standards that vary by category and region.
  • Document verification — qualification, category, age and identity.

The physical stage is where most candidates are eliminated

As with other uniformed recruitments, the written paper is pitched to be widely clearable and the physical tests do the real filtering. Running and jumping standards cannot be reached in a few weeks, and the physical test follows the written result closely. Training from the first week of preparation is not optional advice here.

Eligibility

Who can apply for RPF

The conditions below are those of the 2024 CENs, judged as on the closing date for qualification and 1 July 2024 for age; a new notification will set fresh dates. Candidates awaiting a final result on the closing date are not eligible. Both posts are open to men and women, with separate vacancies, and are not identified as suitable for persons with disabilities.

Other conditions

  • Fee — The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  • Medical — Standard B-1 — distant vision 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power not above 4D), near vision Sn 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses, and the colour, binocular, night and mesopic vision tests — examined after the physical tests.
  • Ex-servicemen — Exempt from the PET but must pass the PMT; 10 per cent of vacancies are reserved for them.

Selection process

How RPF selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Computer-based testObjective, 120 questions, 120 marks, 90 minutesGeneral Awareness 50 marks, Arithmetic 35 and General Intelligence and Reasoning 35, one mark each, at matriculation level for Constable and graduate level for SI. One third of a mark is deducted per wrong answer. Minimum 35 per cent for UR, EWS and OBC and 30 per cent for SC and ST; normalised CBT marks build the merit and shortlist ten times the vacancies per category for the physical tests.
Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Measurement TestQualifying, one chance for the run, two for the jumpsConstable men: 1,600 metres in 5 minutes 45 seconds, long jump 14 feet, high jump 4 feet; Constable women: 800 metres in 3 minutes 40 seconds, long jump 9 feet, high jump 3 feet. SI men: 1,600 metres in 6 minutes 30 seconds, long jump 12 feet, high jump 3 feet 9 inches; SI women: 800 metres in 4 minutes, long jump 9 feet, high jump 3 feet. PMT: height 165 cm for men and 157 cm for women (160 and 152 for SC/ST; 163 and 155 for the listed hill communities), chest 80–85 cm for men (76.2–81.2 for SC/ST). Ex-servicemen skip the PET but take the PMT.
Document verification and medical examinationOn CBT merit among PET/PMT qualifiersCandidates who clear the physical tests are verified against the class 10 or degree certificate, age, category and other documents, and undergo a medical examination to standard B-1. The panel is drawn on CBT merit, and zones are allotted afterwards.

Application to appointment

How RPF recruitment runs, from the RRB application to the CBT, physical tests, verification and zone allotment

The steps as they ran in the 2024 cycle, which the next CEN is expected to follow.

The RPF process, from account to appointment

  1. Create an account on rrbapply.gov.in One account serves every RRB notification: mobile number, e-mail, name, parents’ names and date of birth exactly as on the matriculation certificate, and Aadhaar verification. Details in the account form — and the RRB chosen — cannot be changed later, even in the paid modification window, so they must be right at this step.
  2. Choose one RRB and rank the posts You apply to one Railway Recruitment Board only, and are examined and considered against that RRB’s vacancies; a second application to any RRB cancels all of them. Inside the chosen RRB you rank every post and zone you are eligible for and willing to join — posts left without a preference are treated as declined, and preferences are final.
  3. Fill the form with a live photograph The form asks for qualification, category and the certificates you will produce at verification, captures a live photograph through the webcam or phone camera at the time of application, and takes uploads of the photograph, signature and any category certificates to the CEN’s specification.
  4. Pay the fee The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  5. Use the modification window if you must A ten-day window opens after applications close in which any field other than the account details and the chosen RRB can be corrected on payment of ₹250 per occasion, which is not refunded.
  6. Application status, city intimation, then the e-call letter The RRBs publish a notice for checking whether your application was accepted. About ten days before your date the exam city and date, and the travel authority for SC and ST candidates, become visible in the login; the e-call letter itself is released about four days before the examination. Aadhaar-linked biometric authentication is done at the centre, so carry the original Aadhaar card and the same photo identity document named in the application, and keep Aadhaar biometrics unlocked.
  7. The computer-based test Objective questions in the language chosen at application, with a separate scribe-eligible duration. There is no sectional timing; the whole paper is one clock. Mock tests to familiarise candidates with the interface are put on the RRB website before the examination.
  8. Results, scores and the objection tracker After each CBT the question paper, responses and provisional answer key are opened in the login with an objection window; results are published RRB by RRB as PDF lists of roll numbers with category-wise normalised cut-offs, and individual scores can be viewed in the login for a limited period.
  9. CBT result and the ten-times shortlist Each RRB publishes normalised cut-offs scaled to 100 and the roll numbers shortlisted for PET/PMT and document verification — ten times the vacancies in each category for men, women and ex-servicemen. If the shortlisted candidates do not fill the vacancies after the physical tests, a second round is called for ten times the shortfall; there are at most two rounds.
  10. PET and PMT The 1,600-metre or 800-metre run is one chance; long jump and high jump allow two chances each. Candidates who pass the run are measured for height and, for men, chest. Both tests are qualifying with no marks, and a grievance cell sits at the venue.
  11. Document verification, medical, panel and zone allotment Originals are verified at the same event, the medical examination follows to standard B-1, and the RRBs publish the panel on CBT merit — 4,205 constables on 16 February 2026 — with zone allotment and medical notices afterwards. The RPF issues the appointment and training follows.

Train for the jumps, not just the run

The 1,600 metres in 5 minutes 45 seconds is the event candidates prepare for; the 14-foot long jump and 4-foot high jump for Constable (12 feet and 3 feet 9 inches for SI) are where untrained candidates fail, with only two chances each. Practise all three from the start.

Exam pattern

RPF exam pattern and marking

The RPF exam pattern below is the scheme in CEN RPF 01/2024 and 02/2024 — a single 120-question CBT with one third of a mark off per wrong answer, then qualifying physical tests. The standard of the Constable paper is class 10 and of the SI paper graduate level; the structure is the same. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

RPF Constable and SI CBT exam pattern: 120 questions, 120 marks, 90 minutes; one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer; the merit list.

One third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer in every computer-based test; an unattempted question costs nothing. Where a test runs in more than one shift, marks are normalised across shifts by the RRBs’ published formula, and it is the normalised score — not the raw mark — that is compared with the cut-off and used for shortlisting. Ten times the vacancies per category are shortlisted for PET/PMT and document verification on CBT merit.

Study plan

How to prepare for RPF

RPF is a general awareness examination with a physical test attached: 50 of the 120 CBT marks are recall, arithmetic and reasoning are 35 each at class-10 level for Constable and graduate level for SI, and the cut-off in 2024-25 sat around 70–76 out of 100 for unreserved SI candidates. The physical standards — a 1,600-metre run and two jumps — need months, not weeks.

A four-month plan

  1. Month 1: awareness spine and the run History, geography, polity, economy, science, sports, culture, the railways and RPF, and daily current affairs; arithmetic basics. Start running three times a week towards 1,600 metres in under six minutes, and practise long and high jump technique.
  2. Month 2: arithmetic and reasoning to speed Number system, percentages, ratio, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, tables and graphs, mensuration, time and distance; analogies, series, coding, spatial visualisation, syllogism, statement and conclusion.
  3. Month 3: full mocks A 120-question, 90-minute mock every second day scored with a third off per error, an error log, and a timed run and jumps every week.
  4. Month 4: revision and the examination Revise from notes and the error log, keep current affairs to the CBT date, and be inside the physical standards with a margin.

What the pattern means for the attempt

  • Awareness first — Fifty recall questions in the first 25 minutes, skipping the unknown, leaves an hour for the 70 calculating questions.
  • A third off per error — Guess only between two options; three wrong answers cancel a right one.
  • The PET is pass or fail with one chance on the run — A candidate who clears the CBT and fails the run is out; train the run harder than the paper.

Questions

RPF — FAQs

What is the difference between RPF Constable and Sub-Inspector?

The qualification and the standards. Constable requires a class 10 pass; Sub-Inspector requires a bachelor’s degree and is the supervisory rank. Both sit the same shape of computer-based test and go through the same physical efficiency and measurement framework, but the physical standards applied differ between the two posts, as they do between male and female candidates.

Which section carries the most marks in RPF?

General awareness, at 50 of the 120 marks — over forty per cent of the paper, and a larger share than in any other railway examination. Because it is recall-based and its themes repeat across cycles, it is also the most improvable section, which makes a daily habit of static revision plus current affairs the highest-return preparation available for this exam. Candidates arriving from SSC or banking preparation, where quantitative aptitude dominates, routinely mis-weight their study.

How should I prepare for RPF?

On two tracks from the first week. Written preparation should be weighted towards general awareness, which is the largest section, with arithmetic and reasoning treated as fluency projects at school level. Physical training should start immediately and continue without pause, because running and jump standards build gradually and the physical test follows the written result closely — a gap that is not reliably long enough to get fit from a standing start.

When is the next RPF notification?

No RPF CEN had been issued as of 15 September 2026. The last recruitment — CEN RPF 01/2024 for 452 Sub-Inspectors and CEN RPF 02/2024 for 4,208 Constables — was notified on 15 April 2024 and reached the Constable panel on 16 February 2026 and zone allotment on 23 February 2026. The next notification will appear on the RRB websites and rrbapply.gov.in after an indicative notice in Employment News.

What is the RPF exam pattern for Constable and SI?

A single computer-based test of 120 questions for 120 marks in 90 minutes — General Awareness 50, Arithmetic 35, General Intelligence and Reasoning 35 — with one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer and minimum marks of 35 per cent for UR, EWS and OBC and 30 per cent for SC and ST. The standard is class 10 for Constable and graduate level for SI. Ten times the vacancies are called for the qualifying PET and PMT and document verification, and the panel is drawn on CBT merit after the medical examination.

What are the RPF physical test requirements?

Constable: men run 1,600 metres in 5 minutes 45 seconds with a 14-foot long jump and 4-foot high jump; women run 800 metres in 3 minutes 40 seconds with a 9-foot long jump and 3-foot high jump. SI: men run 1,600 metres in 6 minutes 30 seconds with a 12-foot long jump and 3-foot-9-inch high jump; women run 800 metres in 4 minutes with 9-foot and 3-foot jumps. One chance for the run, two for each jump. Height is 165 cm for men and 157 cm for women (160 and 152 for SC/ST, 163 and 155 for the listed hill communities), with chest 80–85 cm for men (76.2–81.2 for SC/ST).

What was the RPF cut-off in the last recruitment?

For Sub-Inspector, the normalised cut-offs scaled to 100 published on 3 March 2025 were 75.96 for UR men and 69.18 for UR women, 73.71 and 70.95 for OBC, 72.73 and 71.11 for EWS, 69.00 and 65.78 for SC and 67.27 and 62.43 for ST. For Constable, the RRBs published category-wise cut-offs with the panel on 16 February 2026, and the ex-servicemen cut-off was 35.01 for UR. Cut-offs are on normalised marks and differ by zone and category.

Who is eligible for RPF Constable and SI?

Constable needs class 10 and an age of 18 to 28; SI needs a graduate degree and an age of 20 to 28 — both as on 1 July of the notification year in the 2024 CENs, with five years’ relaxation for SC and ST, three for OBC and service plus three to eight years for ex-servicemen. Both posts are open to men and women with separate vacancies, require the PMT height and chest standards, and are not identified for persons with disabilities. The fee is ₹500 with ₹400 refunded on appearing in the CBT, or ₹250 fully refunded for the exempted categories.

What is the RPF Constable and SI salary?

Constable (Executive) is in Pay Level 3 with initial pay of ₹21,700 and Sub-Inspector (Executive) in Pay Level 6 with initial pay of ₹35,400, plus dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance, ration money and the other allowances of the force.

Is there negative marking in the RPF exam?

Yes — one third of a mark for every wrong answer in the CBT, with no deduction for unattempted questions. Marks are normalised across shifts and scaled to 100 before cut-offs are applied; the PET and PMT carry no marks.
