UPSC IFoS 2026: Indian Forest Service Notification, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Cut-off and Free Mock Tests

The Indian Forest Service is the third of the All India Services, responsible for the management of forests, wildlife and environmental resources. Its officers head forest divisions, run wildlife protection, oversee working plans and carry statutory responsibilities under environmental legislation.

It shares its preliminary examination with the Civil Services Examination, which means candidates apply for both from a single screening paper. From the main examination onwards it diverges completely: two optional subjects rather than one, no essay paper, no general studies papers as CSE understands them, and a science-weighted subject list.

Overview

What UPSC IFoS is, and who it suits

Indian Forest Service officers manage the country’s forest and wildlife resources — preparing and implementing working plans, administering protected areas, enforcing forest and wildlife legislation, and balancing conservation against the demands of development and local livelihoods. It is a field service, and the working conditions are correspondingly demanding.

Eligibility is narrower than for the Civil Services Examination. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree with at least one of a prescribed list of subjects — animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics and zoology — or a degree in agriculture, forestry or engineering. A degree in the humanities alone does not qualify.

How IFoS differs from the Civil Services Examination

  • Shared prelims — the same screening paper, with candidates able to apply for both examinations.
  • Two optional subjects, not one — four papers of 200 marks each, drawn from a science and engineering weighted list.
  • No essay paper and no general studies papers — the mains structure is General English, General Knowledge and the two optionals.
  • Physical standards apply — including height and chest requirements and a walking test, which the Civil Services Examination does not have.

The optional subject choice is heavily constrained

IFoS optionals are drawn from a science, agriculture and engineering list — subjects such as botany, zoology, forestry, agriculture, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology and the engineering disciplines. Certain combinations are not permitted together. Both the list and the disallowed pairings are set out in the notification, and getting this wrong at application is a wasted cycle.

Eligibility

Who can apply for UPSC IFoS

IFoS has a subject requirement that the Civil Services Examination does not, and a physical standards test at the end. Eligibility is judged on the closing date and verified at the personality test.

Qualification

  • Degree — A bachelor’s degree with at least one of animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics or zoology, or a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, forestry or engineering, from a recognised university. Final-year candidates may apply and must prove passing with the detailed application form.
Age 21–32 on 1 August 2026, with the same relaxations and attempt limits as the Civil Services Examination.
CategoryRelaxationAttempts
General and EWS—6
OBC3 years9
SC and ST5 yearsUnlimited
PwBD10 years9
Ex-servicemen with 5 years’ service5 yearsAs per category

Physical standards and other conditions

  • Walking test — 25 km in four hours for men and 14 km for women, taken after recommendation, along with the medical examination.
  • Fee — ₹100 with the common prelims application and ₹200 on admission to the IFoS mains, paid in a ten-day window after the screening result; nil for women, SC, ST and PwBD.
  • Applying with the CSE — One prelims application covers both; a candidate ticks both examinations and, if screened for both, sits both mains.

Selection process

How UPSC IFoS selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Screening through the Civil Services (Preliminary) ExaminationTwo objective papers of 200 marks, 24 May 2026Candidates apply for IFoS through the common prelims application and are screened on General Studies Paper I with the CSAT qualifying at 33 per cent, against a separate, higher IFoS cut-off — 105.34 for general candidates in 2025 against 92.66 for the CSE. Prelims marks are not carried forward.
Indian Forest Service (Main) ExaminationSix conventional papers over seven days, 1,400 marksGeneral English 300, General Knowledge 300, and two optional subjects of two papers each at 200 marks per paper, chosen from the list of 14 science and engineering subjects with the notified combinations barred. A minimum of 5 per cent in each paper applies. Held from 22 November 2026.
Personality testInterview at UPSC, 300 marksCandidates about twice the vacancies are called on mains marks; final merit is 1,400 plus 300 out of 1,700, and appointment follows the physical standards test — a 25 km walk for men and 14 km for women in four hours — and medical examination at the Forest Research Institute.

How UPSC IFoS runs, from the common prelims application to the forest service mains, the interview and the walking test

The steps in the order they happen, with the fees and windows the 2026 notification specifies.

The UPSC IFoS process, from registration to recommendation

  1. Create the account and the Universal Registration Number profile on upsconline.nic.in The Commission’s portal has four modules: account creation, universal registration (the URN profile with your identity, photograph, signature, photo-ID and educational particulars), a common application form, and an examination-specific form. The first three are filled once and reused for every UPSC examination; the URN profile must be locked before an examination form can be submitted, and the photo-ID entered there is the one carried to every stage.
  2. Fill the examination-specific form in the notified window Choose the centre, the medium and language options, the optional subject or service preferences where the notification asks for them, claim any category, PwBD or fee-remission benefit with the certificate details, and submit before 6 p.m. on the last date. A withdrawal window of about a week usually follows the closing date for candidates who no longer wish to appear.
  3. Pay the fee ₹100 with the common preliminary application; nil for women, SC, ST and PwBD. Candidates admitted to the IFoS main examination pay a further ₹200 in the ten-day window after the screening result.
  4. e-Admit card Issued on the portal about a week to ten days before the examination; it is not posted. Print it, check the photograph and the centre, and carry it with the photo-ID named in the URN profile. Centres are allotted first-come, and a candidate who does not get a preferred centre is allotted another in the same region.
  5. The written examination Objective papers are answered on an OMR sheet in black ballpoint pen, with the question paper series and roll number coded by hand — the Commission publishes a note on the common OMR mistakes that lead to rejection. Conventional papers are handwritten in the question-cum-answer booklet. Provisional answer keys are opened for representations on the portal within a week of an objective paper.
  6. Result and the next stage Results are published as roll-number lists on upsc.gov.in with a press note; marks and cut-offs are released only after the final result. Qualified candidates get a window on the portal to pay the next-stage fee, update details and submit the detailed application form where the examination has one.
  7. Screening result and the mains fee window The IFoS screening list is published with the CSE prelims result. Admitted candidates pay the mains fee and file the detailed application form with their two optional subjects, which must be a permitted combination.
  8. The main examination Six papers over seven days in November — General English, General Knowledge and two papers in each optional — answered in English only. A minimum of 5 per cent in each paper applies.
  9. Personality test, walking test and medical About twice the vacancies are interviewed for 300 marks. Recommended candidates take the walking test and the medical examination, and are allotted state cadres by rank and preference.

Exam pattern

UPSC IFoS exam pattern and marking

The UPSC IFoS exam pattern below is the scheme in the 2026 notification. Screening is the CSE prelims; the mains is six conventional papers with two optionals; the interview adds 300. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

IFoS screening — the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination.
PaperMarksTimeRole
General Studies Paper I2002 hoursIFoS cut-off, set higher than the CSE cut-off
General Studies Paper II (CSAT)2002 hoursQualifying at 33 per cent
IFoS main examination: 1,400 marks in six papers, English medium, 5 per cent minimum in each.

V and VIOptional subject 2, papers 1 and 2200 each

Total1,700

One third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for every wrong answer in the objective papers; a question left blank costs nothing, and a question with more than one answer marked counts as wrong. Optional subjects: agriculture, agricultural engineering, animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, forestry, geology, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, statistics and zoology, with the combinations the notification bars.

Study plan

How to prepare for UPSC IFoS

IFoS is decided by the two optionals — 800 of 1,400 written marks — and by clearing a prelims cut-off about 13 marks higher than the CSE’s. Most candidates prepare it alongside the CSE; the extra work is a second science optional and the General Knowledge paper at IFoS depth.

A twelve-month plan

  1. Months 1–4: optionals and GS foundations Choose a permitted pair with material available — forestry, botany, zoology, agriculture and geology are the common choices — and work paper 1 of each while covering the prelims GS syllabus.
  2. Months 5–8: prelims mode with the IFoS margin Weekly prelims mocks aiming 10–15 marks above the CSE cut-off; CSAT to a safe 40 per cent; paper 2 of each optional in parallel.
  3. Months 9–12: mains Answer writing in the optionals and General Knowledge, General English practice, and the walking test trained on foot.

Questions

UPSC IFoS — FAQs

How is IFoS different from the Civil Services Examination?

They share only the preliminary paper. From mains onwards IFoS has no essay paper and none of the four general studies papers; instead it has a General English paper, a narrower General Knowledge paper and two optional subjects rather than one. The optionals are drawn from a science, agriculture and engineering list rather than the broad CSE list. IFoS also applies physical standards and a walking test, which the Civil Services Examination does not.

How should I choose IFoS optional subjects?

Primarily on your degree background, because the two optionals carry 800 of the 1400 mains marks and the depth expected is closer to a degree examination than to a competitive summary. Read past papers in each candidate subject before committing — that reveals the required depth better than any syllabus. Note also that certain combinations are not permitted together; the notification sets out which, and choosing a disallowed pairing at application costs a full cycle.

What are the UPSC IFoS 2026 exam dates and vacancies?

The examination was notified on 14 January 2026 with about 80 vacancies — UR 33, OBC 21, SC 12, EWS 8, ST 6. Screening was through the CSE prelims on 24 May 2026, the screening result came on 15 June, and the IFoS main examination runs from 22 November 2026 for seven days. Interviews and the final result follow in 2027; the 2025 cycle recommended 148 candidates on 8 May 2026.

What is the UPSC IFoS exam pattern?

Screening through the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination — GS Paper I of 200 marks with a separate IFoS cut-off and the CSAT qualifying at 33 per cent — then the IFoS main examination of six conventional papers for 1,400 marks: General English 300, General Knowledge 300 and two optional subjects of two 200-mark papers each, with 5 per cent required in every paper. The personality test carries 300 marks and the final merit is out of 1,700.

What was the IFoS 2025 cut-off?

For general candidates 105.34 out of 200 at the prelims screening, 675 out of 1,400 in the mains and 925 out of 1,700 at the final stage; EWS 102.66, 629 and 883; OBC 104.66, 636 and 873; SC 97.34, 594 and 830; ST 96.00, 613 and 836. The IFoS prelims cut-off is about 13 marks above the CSE cut-off for the same paper.

Who is eligible for the Indian Forest Service?

A bachelor’s degree with at least one of animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics or zoology, or a degree in agriculture, forestry or engineering; age 21 to 32 on 1 August 2026 with the CSE relaxations; and the same attempt limits as the CSE. Recommended candidates must pass a walking test of 25 km (men) or 14 km (women) in four hours and the medical examination.

Can I apply for IFoS and the Civil Services Examination together?

Yes — one preliminary application covers both, and the same prelims on 24 May screens for both against separate cut-offs. A candidate screened for both sits the CSE mains in August and the IFoS mains in November, and can be recommended for both. The IFoS mains needs two science or engineering optionals, which is the extra preparation.
