Method
How to use mock tests for UPSC examinations
The civil services preliminary paper is answered mostly by elimination rather than by recall, and its marks do not enter the final ranking. Both facts change what a mock test is for here.
What to measure, beyond the score
- Elimination success rate — for every question answered without knowing the fact outright, record whether narrowing the options produced the right answer. That is the skill the paper actually tests.
- Your blank count as a decision — with a deduction for wrong answers, how many questions you leave is a strategy fixed before the paper rather than an accident during it.
- Accuracy on multi-statement questions — the form where partial knowledge becomes a guess, and where most prelims marks are lost.
- Whether mains practice is happening at all — the merit list is built on descriptive papers. A candidate who has taken thirty prelims mocks and written no timed answers has measured the wrong thing thirty times.
Defence and forest service papers are related but not identical
Several examinations conducted by the commission share general studies ground with the civil services prelims but differ in structure, in the weight given to mathematics or English, and in the non-written stages that follow. Practice transfers; strategy does not. Read the notification for the examination you are actually sitting.

Are the mock tests really free?
Yes. Every test listed under Free Mock Tests can be attempted without paying, and you get your score, the answer key and explanations at the end. The question count and time shown on each card describe that test, not the full examination.
Do mock tests follow the current exam pattern?
The diagnostics use the exam’s subject mix and marking logic, but they are deliberately shorter than the full paper. Check the conducting body’s current notification for the binding stage structure, question count, timing and marking scheme.
How often should I attempt a full-length mock?
About once a week once you have covered the syllabus, and every two weeks while you are still learning. What matters more than frequency is spending as long on the analysis as you did on the test.
