RRB Group D (Level 1) 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, PET and Free Mock Tests

RRB Group D fills Level 1 posts across the railway network — track maintainer, assistant in various technical departments, pointsman, helper and similar roles that keep the physical infrastructure running. It asks for a class 10 pass or an ITI qualification, and it attracts one of the largest applicant fields of any recruitment in the country.

Unlike NTPC it has a single computer-based test rather than two, which shortens the written stage considerably. What follows it does not shorten: a physical efficiency test with genuine standards, and a medical examination that assigns you to a classification.

How large the field is

With 52.4 lakh applications for 22,195 posts, the CBT selects roughly one in 236 applicants for the PET shortlist of three times the vacancies. Western Railway’s Mumbai list alone carries 1,599 Track Maintainer and 751 Pointsman vacancies; you compete only within the RRB and the posts you ranked.

Overview

What RRB Group D is, and who it suits

Level 1 posts are the operational and maintenance backbone of the railway network: the people who maintain track, work points, assist in electrical, mechanical and signal departments, and staff the ground-level functions on which train movement depends. The qualification requirement is a class 10 pass or an ITI certificate, which makes this the most widely accessible railway recruitment.

The written stage is a single computer-based test, which is simpler than the NTPC two-stage process. But the physical efficiency test that follows is a real filter, with prescribed lifting and running standards that differ for male and female candidates, and the medical examination assigns a classification that determines which posts you can hold.

What the paper actually asks

  • General science — physics, chemistry and life sciences up to class 10, carrying a quarter of the paper — a larger share than in most competitive exams at this level.
  • Mathematics — arithmetic and school-level algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • General intelligence and reasoning — the largest section, verbal and non-verbal.
  • General awareness and current affairs — the smallest section, but straightforward marks for a prepared candidate.

Plan for the physical test from the beginning

The physical efficiency test requires carrying a prescribed weight over a prescribed distance within a time limit, and running a prescribed distance within a time limit, with different standards for male and female candidates. It is qualifying, it cannot be prepared for in a fortnight, and it arrives after the written result. Training should run alongside study from the first week.

Eligibility

Who can apply for RRB Group D

Eligibility is judged as on 2 March 2026, the original closing date, for qualification, and as on 1 January 2026 for age, and verified with originals at document verification — a candidate awaiting a final result on the closing date is not eligible. You apply to one RRB or railway and rank the posts within it.

Qualification

  • All Level 1 posts — Class 10 pass, or ITI from an NCVT or SCVT institution, or a National Apprenticeship Certificate granted by NCVT, or equivalent. A diploma or degree in engineering is not accepted in place of the ITI or apprenticeship where that is the specified qualification.
  • Railway Act apprentices — Course-completed act apprentices trained in railway establishments compete for the vacancies earmarked for them (CCAA) and get age relaxation to the extent of the apprenticeship.
Age 18–33 years as on 1 January 2026, with relaxations of the upper limit.

Other conditions

  • Fee — The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  • Medical — Vision and fitness standards by post — A2 for Pointsman (distant vision 6/9, 6/9 without glasses), B1 for most assistant posts, C1 for workshop posts — examined after the PET; LASIK or corrective surgery disqualifies for the A-standard posts.
  • One RRB — Choose one RRB or railway and rank posts within it; multiple applications are all rejected.

Selection process

How RRB Group D selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Computer-based testObjective, 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutesGeneral Science 25 questions, Mathematics 25, General Intelligence and Reasoning 30 and General Awareness and Current Affairs 20, one mark each, in one 90-minute sitting (120 with a scribe). One third of a mark is deducted per wrong answer. Normalised marks build the merit, subject to minimum qualifying marks of 40 per cent for UR and EWS and 30 per cent for OBC, SC and ST; the RRBs reserve the right to hold a second-stage CBT if needed.
Physical Efficiency TestQualifying, three times the vacanciesMen lift and carry 35 kg for 100 metres in two minutes in one chance without putting the weight down, and run 1,000 metres in 4 minutes 15 seconds in one chance. Women carry 20 kg for 100 metres in two minutes and run 1,000 metres in 5 minutes 40 seconds. PwBD candidates are exempt and are examined medically instead.
Document verification and medical examinationOne candidate per vacancy, railway-wiseCandidates equal to the vacancies of the railway are called on CBT merit among those who clear the PET, with originals of the class 10 or ITI certificate, age, category and domicile documents where claimed. The medical examination follows the standard of the post — A2 for Pointsman, A3 for Assistant Track Machine, B1 for most engineering, electrical and S&T assistants, C1 for the workshop posts.

Application to appointment

How to apply for RRB Group D, what the CBT, the PET and verification involve, and how posts are allotted

The steps as they ran in the CEN 09/2025 cycle, with the fees and rules the notification specifies.

The RRB Group D process, from account to appointment

  1. Create an account on rrbapply.gov.in One account serves every RRB notification: mobile number, e-mail, name, parents’ names and date of birth exactly as on the matriculation certificate, and Aadhaar verification. Details in the account form — and the RRB chosen — cannot be changed later, even in the paid modification window, so they must be right at this step.
  2. Choose one RRB and rank the posts You apply to one Railway Recruitment Board only, and are examined and considered against that RRB’s vacancies; a second application to any RRB cancels all of them. Inside the chosen RRB you rank every post and zone you are eligible for and willing to join — posts left without a preference are treated as declined, and preferences are final.
  3. Fill the form with a live photograph The form asks for qualification, category and the certificates you will produce at verification, captures a live photograph through the webcam or phone camera at the time of application, and takes uploads of the photograph, signature and any category certificates to the CEN’s specification.
  4. Pay the fee The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  5. Use the modification window if you must A ten-day window opens after applications close in which any field other than the account details and the chosen RRB can be corrected on payment of ₹250 per occasion, which is not refunded.
  6. Application status, city intimation, then the e-call letter The RRBs publish a notice for checking whether your application was accepted. About ten days before your date the exam city and date, and the travel authority for SC and ST candidates, become visible in the login; the e-call letter itself is released about four days before the examination. Aadhaar-linked biometric authentication is done at the centre, so carry the original Aadhaar card and the same photo identity document named in the application, and keep Aadhaar biometrics unlocked.
  7. The computer-based test Objective questions in the language chosen at application, with a separate scribe-eligible duration. There is no sectional timing; the whole paper is one clock. Mock tests to familiarise candidates with the interface are put on the RRB website before the examination.
  8. Results, scores and the objection tracker After each CBT the question paper, responses and provisional answer key are opened in the login with an objection window; results are published RRB by RRB as PDF lists of roll numbers with category-wise normalised cut-offs, and individual scores can be viewed in the login for a limited period.
  9. CBT result and the PET shortlist Each RRB publishes the roll numbers shortlisted for the PET — three times the vacancies, on normalised CBT marks above the minimum qualifying percentage, with post preferences considered — and the category-wise cut-offs. Individual scores are opened in the login for a limited period.
  10. Physical Efficiency Test Conducted by the railway with an e-call letter: the weight carry and then the 1,000-metre run, one chance each, qualifying only. Ex-servicemen and PwBD candidates are handled under the notification’s exemptions.
  11. Document verification, medical and empanelment Candidates equal to the vacancies are called railway-wise on CBT merit among PET qualifiers, with originals; ties are broken by age, then alphabetically. Empanelment follows the medical examination, and the railway allots the post and division by merit and preference before appointment as Level 1 staff on ₹18,000.

The run is where most eliminations happen

The CBT is class-10 level and clears a large field; the 1,000-metre run in 4 minutes 15 seconds (5 minutes 40 seconds for women) after carrying 35 kg (20 kg) is what most candidates have not trained for. Start running in the first week of preparation, not after the result.

Exam pattern

RRB Group D exam pattern and marking

The RRB Group D exam pattern below is the scheme in CEN 09/2025 — a single 100-question CBT with one third of a mark off per wrong answer, followed by a qualifying PET. The notification describes the section split as indicative and reserves the right to hold a second-stage CBT. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

RRB Group D (Level 1) exam pattern: 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes (120 with a scribe); one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer.

Female20 kg, 100 metres, 2 minutes, one chance1,000 metres in 5 minutes 40 seconds, one chance

One third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer in every computer-based test; an unattempted question costs nothing. Where a test runs in more than one shift, marks are normalised across shifts by the RRBs’ published formula, and it is the normalised score — not the raw mark — that is compared with the cut-off and used for shortlisting. Document verification and medical examination are called at 1:1 of the vacancies railway-wise.

Study plan

How to prepare for RRB Group D

Group D is a class-10 paper with a field of over 50 lakh, so the cut-off is decided by accuracy and speed rather than difficulty. General Science and Mathematics are half the paper and the most learnable; reasoning is the largest section; awareness is 20 recall marks. The PET is a separate preparation that should start on day one.

A three-month plan

  1. Month 1: science, mathematics and start running Class 9–10 physics, chemistry and biology (units, motion, force, work and energy, light, sound, electricity, acids and bases, metals, carbon compounds, life processes, heredity, environment); arithmetic and basic algebra, geometry and mensuration. Three runs a week towards 1,000 metres in four minutes and weighted walks with 20–35 kg.
  2. Month 2: reasoning and awareness Series, analogies, coding, classification, syllogism, Venn diagrams, directions, puzzles, mirror images and calendar questions; a static awareness spine with railways, sports, culture, economy and polity, and daily current affairs.
  3. Month 3: full mocks and the run A full 100-question mock every second day with a third off per error, an error log by topic, and a timed 1,000-metre run every week with a margin inside the standard.

What the pattern means for the attempt

  • 54 seconds a question — One hundred questions in 90 minutes with no sectional timer; take science and mathematics first if they are your strengths.
  • The one-third deduction punishes guessing — Three wrong answers cancel a right one; leave what you do not know.
  • Choose the paper language you read fastest — The CBT is offered in English, Hindi and the regional languages the notification lists.

Questions

RRB Group D — FAQs

How much general science is there in RRB Group D?

A quarter of the paper — 25 of the 100 questions — covering physics, chemistry and life sciences at approximately class 10 level. It is the most systematically coverable section in the exam because the underlying syllabus is finite: a candidate who works through class 10 science chapter by chapter will have seen essentially everything this section can ask, which is unusual in competitive exams.

Is RRB Group D a speed test?

Less so than most competitive papers. Ninety minutes for a hundred questions works out to nearly a minute each, which is generous by the standards of SSC or banking exams. That changes the optimal approach: the binding constraint is accuracy rather than pace, and with one third of a mark deducted per error, the profile that scores best is careful and disciplined rather than fast and expansive.

What is the RRB Group D exam pattern for 2026?

A single computer-based test of 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes — General Science 25, Mathematics 25, General Intelligence and Reasoning 30, General Awareness and Current Affairs 20 — with one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer and no sectional timing. Candidates above the minimum qualifying marks are shortlisted three times the vacancies for a qualifying Physical Efficiency Test, then called one per vacancy for document verification and medical examination on CBT merit.

When is the RRB Group D 2026 exam and result?

The CBT for CEN 09/2025 was held from 3 to 25 August 2026 in 16 sittings — 3–6, 9–14, 17–21 and 25 August. As of 15 September 2026 the result had not been declared; each RRB will publish its shortlist and cut-offs, followed by the PET schedule.

How many vacancies are there in RRB Group D 2026?

22,195 Level 1 vacancies across the railway zones under CEN 09/2025, against 52,39,760 applications. The largest single posts are Track Maintainer Grade IV and Pointsman-B; Western Railway (Mumbai) alone notified 1,599 Track Maintainer and 751 Pointsman posts. Vacancies are railway-wise and you compete only within the RRB you chose.

What are the RRB Group D PET standards?

Men lift and carry 35 kg for 100 metres in two minutes in one chance without putting the weight down, and run 1,000 metres in 4 minutes 15 seconds in one chance. Women carry 20 kg for 100 metres in two minutes and run 1,000 metres in 5 minutes 40 seconds. The PET is qualifying, three times the vacancies are called, and PwBD candidates are exempt.

Who is eligible for RRB Group D, and what is the age limit?

Class 10 pass, or ITI from NCVT or SCVT, or a National Apprenticeship Certificate from NCVT, as on the closing date; age 18 to 33 as on 1 January 2026, with five years’ relaxation for SC and ST, three for OBC, ten to fifteen for PwBD and service plus three to eight years for ex-servicemen. A diploma or degree is not accepted in place of the ITI where the ITI is specified. The fee is ₹500 with ₹400 refunded on appearing, or ₹250 fully refunded for the exempted categories.

What is the RRB Group D salary?

All the posts are in Level 1 of the 7th CPC pay matrix with initial pay of ₹18,000, plus dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and the railway’s running or post-specific allowances, which are added on top of the basic according to the place of posting.

Is there negative marking in RRB Group D?

Yes — one third of a mark for every wrong answer. Unattempted questions are not penalised, and marks are normalised across the 16 sittings before the cut-offs are applied.
