Online IELTS Coaching, Online IELTS Classes and the IELTS Guide 2026

Looking for online IELTS coaching or online IELTS classes? Start with what the test actually is, then judge any course against it. IELTS assesses English proficiency across four skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking — and is accepted for study, work and migration in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and increasingly elsewhere. It comes in two versions, and choosing the wrong one is a costly mistake.

The Academic module is for university admission; General Training is for migration and certain work and training purposes. The listening and speaking components are identical between them, but the reading and writing components differ substantially, and a test taken in the wrong module cannot be repurposed.

Checked 12 September 2026 on ielts.org and IDP India. The test runs year-round on paper and on computer at centres across India, and online in many countries; the format and the 2 hours 45 minutes are the same in every mode. Results on computer are the fastest — 80 per cent within two days globally, one to two days in India — with paper results in seven days and UKVI paper in 13. The 2026 fee in India is ₹19,000. A candidate who misses a target in one skill can book IELTS One Skill Retake once, within 60 days of a computer-based test, and receive a new report combining the four scores. IELTS remains the only English test accepted by all four immigration authorities that require one — the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand — though the online version is not accepted for every visa route.

Overview

What IELTS is, and who it suits

IELTS is one of the two most widely accepted English proficiency tests for international study and migration. It reports a band score from 1 to 9 for each of the four skills and an overall band, and institutions and immigration authorities set minimum requirements both overall and, frequently, for individual skills.

That per-skill requirement is worth noticing early. A candidate with a strong overall band but a weak writing band may fail to meet a requirement that a more balanced candidate with the same overall score satisfies. Balance across the four skills matters more than the overall figure suggests.

The four components

  • Listening — four recorded sections of increasing difficulty, played once only, with questions answered as you listen. Identical across both modules.
  • Reading — three sections. Academic uses long passages from journals and books; General Training uses workplace and social texts of increasing complexity.
  • Writing — two tasks. Academic asks for a description of a chart or diagram and an essay; General Training asks for a letter and an essay.
  • Speaking — a face-to-face or video interview in three parts — introduction, a long turn on a given topic, and a discussion. Identical across both modules.

The speaking test is a real conversation, not a recording

Unlike TOEFL, where speaking responses are recorded, IELTS speaking is an interview with a certified examiner. That suits some candidates and unsettles others, and it is a genuine consideration when choosing between the two tests. It also means the assessment covers interaction — responding to follow-up questions, developing a point when prompted — rather than only prepared delivery.

Online IELTS coaching

Online IELTS coaching and online IELTS classes: what they must include

IELTS is the most searched-for coaching among the international tests, and online IELTS classes now outnumber classroom ones. The test has not changed to suit them: the speaking test is still a live examiner, the writing is still marked by a human against four public criteria, and the reading and listening still turn on speed. Good online IELTS coaching is built around those three facts.

What online IELTS coaching has to deliver

  • Live speaking practice with a trained assessor — the speaking test is 11 to 14 minutes with an examiner; recorded lessons cannot rehearse it. Look for one-to-one or small-group sessions scored on fluency, lexical resource, grammar and pronunciation.
  • Writing marked against the public band descriptors — Task 1 and Task 2 essays returned with a band per criterion — task achievement, coherence, vocabulary, grammar — not a single mark and a comment.
  • Timed computer-based mocks — most Indian candidates now sit IELTS on computer; practice should be on screen with the same 30, 60 and 60-minute clocks and the same navigation.
  • A plan to the target band — a course that promises Band 8 to everyone is selling; one that diagnoses a Band 6 writer and sets a 6.5 or 7 plan is coaching.
Batch or one-to-one
Batch online IELTS classes suit listening and reading strategy; speaking and writing improve fastest one-to-one. Many candidates do both — a batch for the receptive skills, individual sessions for the productive ones.
How the trainer knows the test
Ask what band descriptors the trainer marks to, and whether they have examined or been trained by IDP or the British Council. The public descriptors are on ielts.org; a trainer who cannot cite them is guessing.
What a fair course costs
Online IELTS coaching in India is typically priced per month or per batch, well below the ₹19,000 test fee for a group course and above it for intensive one-to-one work. Pay for assessment and feedback, not for video hours.

Eligibility

Who can apply for IELTS

Who can take IELTS, and what the test centre checks. From IELTS and IDP India.
ConditionRule
AgeNo formal minimum, but IELTS is not recommended for candidates under 16; the content is written for adults.
Nationality and qualificationAnyone may register; no educational qualification is required.
Identity document in IndiaA valid passport. IDP India asks for the passport details at booking and a photocopy of its first, last and observation pages, and the original passport is presented on test day. The document used to register must be the one shown at the centre.
Which moduleAcademic for university admission and professional registration; General Training for migration, work and training below degree level; IELTS for UKVI where a UK visa route requires a Secure English Language Test; IELTS Life Skills for UK family and settlement routes.
AttemptsNo limit; each attempt is a full fee, and One Skill Retake allows one skill to be resat once within 60 days of a computer-based test.
Special arrangementsExtra time, modified papers, a lip-reading speaking version and other arrangements are available on application to the centre with medical evidence, usually at least six weeks before the test.

Book the module the receiving organisation names, not the one that seems easier. A university that asks for Academic will not accept General Training, and a UK visa route that needs a SELT will not accept a standard IELTS taken at a non-UKVI centre. IDP India lists which centres run the UKVI test.

Selection process

How IELTS selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
ListeningAbout 30 minutes plus transfer timeFour sections of recorded material — conversations and monologues in social and academic contexts — of increasing difficulty, played once only. Identical in both the Academic and General Training modules.
Reading60 minutesThree sections. The Academic module uses long passages from books, journals and newspapers written for a non-specialist audience; General Training uses notices, advertisements, workplace documents and general-interest texts of increasing complexity.
Writing60 minutes, two tasksAcademic Task 1 requires describing a graph, table, chart or diagram in at least 150 words; General Training Task 1 requires a letter. Task 2 in both modules is an essay of at least 250 words responding to a point of view or argument. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1.
Speaking11 to 14 minutes, in three partsPart 1 is an introduction and questions on familiar topics; Part 2 is a long turn of one to two minutes on a topic given on a card, after a minute of preparation; Part 3 is a discussion developing the Part 2 theme. Conducted with a certified examiner.

Procedure

How to register for IELTS in India, what happens on test day, and how results reach you

IDP is the sole IELTS test partner in India; every booking, whether on paper, on computer or online, runs through IDP’s portal or its branches.

From booking to Test Report Form

  1. Choose the module, the mode and the city Academic or General Training; on paper, on computer or IELTS Online; and a centre. Computer-based dates run several times a week in most cities and return results fastest.
  2. Register on the IDP India portal Create a candidate login, enter passport details exactly as printed, choose the date and, for the paper test, a speaking slot, and pay ₹19,000 by card. Registration is also possible in person at an IDP branch or by courier with a demand draft; confirmation follows once payment and the passport copy are verified.
  3. Upload or send the passport copy First and last pages plus any observation page, uploaded at booking or couriered to IDP’s head office for offline registrations.
  4. Before the day Take the free IELTS on Computer familiarisation test, check the venue address and reporting time in the confirmation email, and read the test rules; the speaking test may fall on the same day or within a few days of the written papers.
  5. Test day Arrive early with the original passport; check-in includes a photograph and finger scan. Listening, reading and writing run without a break — 2 hours 40 minutes on computer, with an extra 10 minutes of answer transfer on paper. No dictionary, phone, watch or notes; a supervisor is told of any problem by raising a hand.
  6. Results One to two days on computer in India, seven days on paper, 13 for UKVI paper, in the candidate login, with an email alert. The electronic Test Report Form can be downloaded within two working days.
  7. Sending the result One original TRF is issued; up to five institutions receive it free, and additional TRFs are sent for a fee. Many universities and immigration authorities receive results electronically, so a paper copy is often unnecessary.
  8. If the result is short Book One Skill Retake for one skill within 60 days of a computer-based test, or apply for an Enquiry on Results within six weeks — the fee is refunded if the band rises, and the answer takes two to three weeks.
Fees, deadlines and refunds, as IDP India publishes them.

Exam pattern

IELTS exam pattern and marking

The four papers. Listening and speaking are common to both modules; reading and writing differ.
PaperTimeContentMarking
ListeningAbout 30 minutes, plus 10 minutes to transfer answers on paperFour recordings — a social conversation, a monologue, a discussion among up to four people, an academic lecture — with 40 questions: form and note completion, multiple choice, matching, map and diagram labelling, sentence completionOne mark a question; 40 raw marks converted to a band
Reading60 minutesAcademic: three long passages from books, journals and newspapers. General Training: several shorter everyday and workplace texts then one longer passage. 40 questions: true/false/not given, matching headings and information, summary and sentence completion, multiple choiceOne mark a question; Academic and General Training use different conversion tables
Writing60 minutesTask 1 of at least 150 words — Academic describes a graph, chart, table, map or process; General Training writes a letter. Task 2 of at least 250 words — an essay responding to an argument, a problem or a question, weighted twice Task 1Task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, each on 0–9
Speaking11–14 minutesPart 1 introduction and familiar topics; Part 2 a one-minute preparation and up to two minutes of talk on a cue card; Part 3 a discussion extending the Part 2 topicFluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, pronunciation, each on 0–9
How the overall band is computed
The four band scores are averaged and rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to .5, one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Bands are reported in half steps from 0 to 9, and each band has a published descriptor from expert user at 9 to non-user at 1.
The listening and reading conversions
Approximately 30 of 40 gives band 7 in listening and Academic reading, 23 gives band 6 and 16 gives band 5; General Training reading needs a few more correct answers for the same band. The exact tables vary a little between test forms.
What destinations commonly ask for. University figures are the usual ranges, not rules; the visa figures are the authorities’ own.
PurposeTypical requirement
UK Student visaA Secure English Language Test at CEFR B2 for degree-level study — IELTS for UKVI with 5.5 in each component — or the university’s own assessment; universities themselves usually ask 6.0 to 7.0 overall with 5.5 to 6.5 in each part
Australia subclass 500IELTS 6.0 overall as the standard minimum, 5.5 with ten weeks of ELICOS packaged, 5.0 with twenty; universities commonly 6.5 with no band below 6.0
Canada studySet by the designated learning institution, commonly 6.0 to 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5 to 6.0
Canada Express EntryStated in CLB; on IELTS General Training CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill and CLB 9 is 8.0 listening with 7.0 in the other three
United States universitiesCommonly 6.5 to 7.0 overall for undergraduate and graduate admission; some programmes set 7.5 for teaching assistantships
Healthcare registrationThe NMC and GMC ask 7.0 overall with 7.0 in each component (the NMC allows 6.5 in writing); AHPRA 7.0 in each

Study plan

How to prepare for IELTS

An eight-week plan to a target band

  1. Week 1 — diagnose Sit a full official practice test under time, in the mode you will book. Note the band per skill and the question types that cost marks.
  2. Weeks 2–3 — listening and reading technique One listening section and one reading passage a day against the clock; learn the trap in each question type — true/false/not given, matching headings, map labelling — and the transfer discipline for paper.
  3. Weeks 2–6 — writing, assessed Two Task 2 essays and one Task 1 a week, each marked against the four public criteria by a trainer or a careful peer; keep a list of the errors that recur.
  4. Weeks 3–6 — speaking, recorded Daily Part 2 talks to a two-minute timer, recorded and played back; Part 3 practice on abstract topics with a partner; pronunciation work on the sounds and stress patterns that obscure meaning.
  5. Week 7 — full mocks Two complete tests on separate days, including a mock speaking interview, scored to bands; compare with the target and the destination table.
  6. Week 8 — book and rest Book the date only once mocks meet the target in every skill; the last week is for revision of error lists, not new material. Results come in one to two days on computer, so a retake or a One Skill Retake can be planned quickly if one skill falls short.

Questions

IELTS — FAQs

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

The listening and speaking components are identical. The reading and writing components differ substantially: Academic reading uses long passages from books and journals while General Training uses workplace and everyday texts, and Academic Writing Task 1 requires describing a graph or diagram while General Training Task 1 requires a letter. Academic is for university admission and General Training for migration and certain work purposes. They are not interchangeable — a General Training result will not satisfy a university requirement for Academic IELTS.

How is IELTS scored?

On a band scale from 1 to 9 in half-band increments, reported for each of the four skills and as an overall average. The important planning point is that institutions and immigration authorities frequently set a minimum for each individual skill as well as overall — so a candidate scoring 8, 8, 8 and 5.5 may fail a requirement that someone scoring 7 across the board meets comfortably. Your weakest band, not your average, usually decides the outcome.

What is the IELTS speaking test like?

A face-to-face or video interview with a certified examiner, lasting eleven to fourteen minutes in three parts: an introduction with questions on familiar topics; a long turn of one to two minutes on a topic given on a card, after one minute of preparation; and a discussion developing that theme. Because it is a genuine interaction rather than a recorded response, it assesses your ability to respond to follow-up questions and develop a point when prompted — which is one of the main practical differences from TOEFL.

How should I prepare for IELTS writing?

Start by reading the published assessment criteria — task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy — because they tell you exactly what is being scored, and most candidates never look at them. Then write one full task of each type each week, timed and to the word minimums, and have it read by someone who can apply those criteria. Self-assessment of writing is unreliable, which is why external feedback matters more here than in any other component.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

Generally two years, though the accepting institution or authority sets its own rules about how recent a score it will consider. Plan your test date against your application deadlines with that in mind — taking the test very early risks the score expiring before you apply, while leaving it late removes the option of a retake if a per-skill minimum is narrowly missed.

What is the IELTS fee in India and how soon do results come?

₹19,000 in 2026 for both Academic and General Training, per IDP India. Results for IELTS on computer arrive in one to two days in India — globally 80 per cent within two days — while paper results take seven days and UKVI paper 13. The electronic Test Report Form can be downloaded within two working days of the result.

What is IELTS One Skill Retake?

A retake of one of the four skills — listening, reading, writing or speaking — booked after a computer-based IELTS and taken within 60 days of the original test, once per original test, at centres that offer it. The new score replaces the old one on a fresh Test Report Form that many institutions and immigration authorities accept; check the organisation’s policy.

Is online IELTS coaching worth it, or can I prepare alone?

Listening and reading can be prepared alone with the official practice material and a timer. Writing and speaking are where online IELTS coaching earns its fee, because both are marked against band descriptors a candidate cannot apply to their own work. If you can only afford one thing, buy assessed writing and live speaking practice rather than recorded lessons.

What should online IELTS classes include?

Live speaking sessions with an assessor, essays returned with a band per criterion, timed computer-based mocks that mirror IELTS on computer, and a plan to a specific target band. Check that the trainer marks to the public IELTS band descriptors and can show a candidate’s progress from a diagnostic to a mock, and use the free material here first so that you pay for feedback rather than for information.

How do I register for IELTS in India?

Through IDP, the only IELTS partner in India: online at the IDP IELTS India portal with passport details and card payment of ₹19,000, in person at an IDP branch, or by courier with a demand draft and a passport copy. Choose Academic or General Training, paper or computer, and a city and date; the paper test lets you choose a speaking slot. Confirmation follows verification of payment and the passport copy.

What ID do I need on IELTS test day in India?

The original valid passport used at registration. The details entered at booking must match it exactly, a photocopy of the first, last and observation pages is submitted with the application, and a candidate without the passport on the day is not admitted and forfeits the fee. Check-in includes a photograph and finger scan.

How is the IELTS band score calculated?

Each skill is scored 0–9 in half bands — listening and reading by converting 40 raw marks, writing and speaking against four criteria each — and the overall band is the average of the four rounded to the nearest half band, with .25 rounding up to .5 and .75 rounding up to the next whole band.

What IELTS score do I need for a UK, Australian or Canadian visa?

For a UK Student visa at degree level, a SELT at CEFR B2 — IELTS for UKVI with 5.5 in each component — unless the university assesses English itself. Australia’s subclass 500 lists 6.0 overall, lower with a packaged English course. Canada’s study permit leaves it to the institution, while Express Entry works in CLB, where CLB 7 is 6.0 in every skill on General Training.

Can I cancel or move my IELTS date?

Yes, through the IDP candidate login. A cancellation at least four days before the test is refunded with 25 per cent deducted, within 7 to 10 working days; inside four days, on the day or afterwards there is no refund. Date transfers are requested the same way with notice of at least 14 days, and a One Skill Retake booking may be transferred once.
