IBPS Clerk (CSA) 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Salary and Free Mock Tests

IBPS Clerk fills Customer Service Associate posts in the clerical cadre of participating public sector banks. It is the most accessible entry into public sector banking — a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, no interview, and a selection decided entirely on written performance.

The absence of an interview changes the exam more than it first appears. With nothing after the main examination to redistribute marks, the cutoff is decided purely on objective scores, which makes accuracy and consistency matter more here than in any other banking recruitment.

What changed in the 2026 notification

The main examination is now 160 questions in 125 minutes: General and Financial Awareness is 40 questions for 50 marks in 20 minutes, Reasoning 40 questions for 60 marks, Quantitative Aptitude 40 for 50 and General English 40 for 40, each on its own timer. The preliminary paper — 30 English, 35 Numerical Ability, 35 Reasoning, 20 minutes each — is unchanged, as is the rule that merit is built from the main examination alone with no interview.

Overview

What IBPS Clerk is, and who it suits

The clerical cadre recruitment fills Customer Service Associate posts across the public sector banks that participate in the IBPS common process. The role is branch-facing — account operations, cash handling, customer service and back-office processing — and it carries a promotion path into the officer cadre through internal examinations.

Two structural features distinguish IBPS Clerk from IBPS PO. There is no interview, so the main examination decides everything. And candidates apply against a chosen state, with cutoffs determined state by state rather than nationally — which means the score you need depends on where you applied, and a mark that clears comfortably in one state may fall short in another.

What this structure means in practice

  • Objective accuracy is everything — with no interview to follow, there is no stage where personality or communication can recover a marginal written score.
  • The state you choose matters — cutoffs vary by state and by category, and the choice is usually locked at application.
  • Language proficiency is checked — candidates are generally expected to be proficient in the official language of the state applied for, verified at a later stage.
  • Mains is the whole exam — prelims qualifies and is then discarded, exactly as in IBPS PO.

Choose your state deliberately

The state preference is typically fixed at the application stage and carries both a cutoff consequence and a language proficiency expectation. It is worth a considered decision rather than a default one, since it affects the score you need and the place you will work.

Eligibility

Who can apply for IBPS Clerk

Eligibility is judged as on the dates in the notification and verified with originals before joining. Two conditions specific to the clerical process catch candidates every year: you apply against one state or UT only, and you must be proficient in that state’s specified local language.

Qualification as on 21 August 2026

  • Degree — A graduation in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India, or an equivalent qualification, with the mark sheet or degree certificate in hand at registration and the result declared on or before 21 August 2026.
  • Local language — Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and understanding the specified local language of the state or UT applied for, as listed against each state in the notification. Candidates who did not study it in class 10 or 12 take a Local Language Proficiency Test conducted by the bank before joining.
  • Computer literacy — Mandatory — a certificate, diploma or degree in computer operations or language, or computer or IT studied as a subject at school or college.
  • Ex-servicemen — Matriculate ex-servicemen who hold the Army Special Certificate of Education or its Navy or Air Force equivalent are eligible for the clerical post without a degree.
Age 20–28 years as on 1 August 2026 — born between 2 August 1998 and 1 August 2006 — with these relaxations of the upper limit.
CategoryRelaxation
SC and ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Persons with benchmark disabilities10 years

Other conditions

  • Nationality — Indian citizens, and the other nationalities listed in the notification with a certificate of eligibility.
  • Fee — ₹850 including GST, or ₹175 for SC, ST, PwBD, ESM and DESM candidates; online only, non-refundable.
  • One state, one application — You may apply for the vacancies of one state or UT only and are examined in that state; the bank preference order is collected before allotment.

Selection process

How IBPS Clerk selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Preliminary examinationOnline, 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutesEnglish Language 30 questions, Numerical Ability 35 and Reasoning Ability 35, one mark each, with a separate 20-minute timer on every section. Candidates must clear the cut-off in each of the three tests; IBPS shortlists an adequate number per category for the main examination and the preliminary marks are then discarded. 0.25 deducted per wrong answer.
Main examinationOnline, 160 questions, 200 marks, 125 minutesGeneral and Financial Awareness 40 questions for 50 marks in 20 minutes, General English 40 questions for 40 marks in 35 minutes, Reasoning Ability 40 questions for 60 marks in 35 minutes and Quantitative Aptitude 40 questions for 50 marks in 35 minutes, each separately timed. Sectional and total cut-offs apply and the merit list is built from this paper alone. 0.25 deducted per wrong answer.
Provisional allotment and local language testBy merit within the state applied forThere is no interview. Candidates are provisionally allotted to a participating bank in the state or UT they applied for, by main examination marks, category and bank preference against the vacancies reported. Proficiency in the state’s specified local language is a condition of appointment and is tested by the bank before joining unless proved by a class 10 or 12 certificate.

Application to allotment

How to apply for IBPS Clerk 2026, what the two examinations involve, and how a bank in your state is allotted

The steps in the order they happen, with the fees and windows the notification of 1 August 2026 specifies.

The IBPS Clerk process, from registration to allotment

  1. Register once on ibps.in during the window Registration is a single online form for both the preliminary and main examinations, on the link that goes live on ibps.in on the opening day. You need a working e-mail address and mobile number that stay with you until provisional allotment, and scans made to the notification’s specification: a photograph (20–50 KB), signature (10–20 KB, not in capitals), left-thumb impression (20–50 KB) and a handwritten declaration (50–100 KB), all .jpeg. A live photograph is also captured through the webcam or phone camera at the time of application.
  2. Choose the state, centre and — where it applies — the medium For the state-wise processes you apply against the vacancies of one state or union territory only and sit the examination there; for the PO process you choose preliminary and main examination centres. The medium of the objective tests, other than English, is English or Hindi and, for the state-wise processes, the regional languages listed for that state. Preferences for banks are collected later, before allotment.
  3. Pay the fee ₹850 including GST, or ₹175 for SC, ST, PwBD, ESM and DESM candidates, paid online between 1 and 21 August 2026. The fee is not refunded or held over.
  4. Edit window A two-day window opens after registration closes, notified on ibps.in, in which the form can be modified on payment of the edit charge. Nothing can be changed after it.
  5. Pre-examination training, then the call letter Candidates from the SC, ST, OBC and minority communities (and, for some processes, ex-servicemen) who opt for it in the form may be offered online pre-examination training in the month before the preliminary examination. Call letters are released on ibps.in about a week to ten days before each examination; the preliminary call letter is stamped at the venue and must be kept for the main examination.
  6. Preliminary examination A one-hour online paper with a separate timer on each section. You must clear the cut-off in each section as well as overall; the number shortlisted for the main examination is fixed by IBPS by category, and preliminary marks are then discarded.
  7. Main examination A longer online paper, again with a separate timer per section, that the merit list is built from. Sectional cut-offs apply. Scores are normalised across sessions and released after the process is complete.
  8. Results, scores and the next step Results appear as a login on ibps.in; scorecards follow. Where the process has an interview, the shortlist and interview call letters are issued through the same login and the interview is conducted by the participating banks under a nodal bank.
  9. Provisional allotment IBPS builds a category-wise merit list on main examination marks within each state or UT and allots candidates provisionally to the participating banks by merit, bank preference and the vacancies the banks report. There is no interview. The allotment is valid for one year.
  10. Local language test and joining The allotted bank tests proficiency in the state’s specified local language before joining for candidates who cannot show it on a class 10 or 12 certificate; failing the test forfeits the appointment. Document verification and a medical examination follow.

Apply in the state whose language you can prove

Every cycle candidates chase the state with the most vacancies and lose the post at the language test. The condition is enforced at joining; if you did not study the language at school, be sure you can read, write and speak it before you pick the state.

Exam pattern

IBPS Clerk exam pattern and marking

The IBPS Clerk exam pattern below is the scheme in the CRP CSA-XVI notification of 1 August 2026. Every section is timed separately and one fourth of a question’s marks is deducted for a wrong answer in both papers. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

IBPS Clerk prelims exam pattern 2026: 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes; 20-minute timer per section; sectional cut-offs; qualifying only.
SectionQuestionsMarksMediumTime
English Language3030English20 minutes
Numerical Ability3535English, Hindi and the state’s regional languages20 minutes
Reasoning Ability3535English, Hindi and the state’s regional languages20 minutes
Total10010060 minutes
IBPS Clerk mains exam pattern 2026: 160 questions, 200 marks, 125 minutes; separately timed sections; sectional and total cut-offs; merit is built from this paper.
SectionQuestionsMarksMediumTime
General and Financial Awareness4050English, Hindi and regional languages20 minutes
General English4040English35 minutes
Reasoning Ability4060English, Hindi and regional languages35 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude4050English, Hindi and regional languages35 minutes
Total160200125 minutes

One fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for every wrong answer in every objective paper; a question left blank costs nothing. Where a paper is held in more than one session, scores are normalised by the equi-percentile method and carried to two decimal places before cut-offs and merit are worked out. No interview: provisional allotment is on main examination marks within the state applied for.

Study plan

How to prepare for IBPS Clerk

IBPS Clerk is a speed examination at every stage: 35 numerical questions in 20 minutes in the prelims, 40 reasoning questions for 60 marks in 35 minutes in the mains. With no interview, the mains score is the whole result, and the sections that decide it — Reasoning at 60 marks and General and Financial Awareness at 50 — reward daily practice and daily reading more than long study sessions.

A four-month plan

  1. Month 1: speed foundations Simplification, approximation, number series, quadratic comparisons and arithmetic to speed; the reasoning families (puzzles, seating, syllogism, inequality, coding, alphanumeric series); English grammar, vocabulary and reading. Begin a daily banking and financial awareness routine.
  2. Month 2: sections on the timer Sectional tests every day on the 20-minute prelims timers, then on the mains timers. Data interpretation in all formats. Keep an error log by topic.
  3. Month 3: full mocks A prelims mock every second day and a mains mock every week, each section on its own timer with 0.25 deducted per wrong answer. Start the state’s language practice if you will face the LLPT.
  4. Month 4: revision and the examinations Revise from notes and the error log, keep current affairs going to the mains date, and taper mocks in the final ten days.

Where the mains marks are

  • Reasoning: 60 marks in 35 minutes — The heaviest section; puzzles and seating arrangement dominate. Accuracy on the sets you attempt beats attempting every set.
  • General and Financial Awareness: 50 marks in 20 minutes — Forty recall questions in 20 minutes — the fastest marks in the paper for a daily reader, and the cheapest to avoid guessing on.
  • Quantitative Aptitude: 50 marks in 35 minutes — Arithmetic, DI and series; speed from recognising question types.
  • General English: 40 marks in 35 minutes — Reading comprehension, cloze, error spotting, sentence rearrangement and vocabulary.

Questions

IBPS Clerk — FAQs

How are IBPS Clerk cutoffs decided?

State-wise and category-wise, from main examination marks. Candidates apply against a chosen state and compete within that state’s merit list, so the score needed varies by where you applied. Comparing your score to a cutoff quoted for a different state is comparing against the wrong number.

Which is the highest-scoring section in IBPS Clerk mains?

General and financial awareness, at fifty marks for forty questions in twenty minutes under the 2026 scheme — the best marks-per-minute ratio in the paper, and entirely recall-based. It is also the most improvable section, because it rewards steady daily contact over several months rather than aptitude. Candidates who start it early and revise it regularly gain more from it than from any comparable investment in quantitative aptitude.

What is the IBPS Clerk 2026 notification date and exam date?

The CRP CSA-XVI notification was published on 1 August 2026 with registration from 1 to 21 August 2026. The preliminary examination is in October — 10 and 11 October 2026 in the IBPS calendar — with the result in November, the main examination in December (27 December in the calendar) and provisional allotment in March 2027.

What is the IBPS Clerk exam pattern for 2026?

Prelims: 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes — English 30, Numerical Ability 35 and Reasoning 35 — each section timed at 20 minutes with sectional cut-offs, qualifying only. Mains: General and Financial Awareness 40 questions for 50 marks in 20 minutes, General English 40 for 40 in 35 minutes, Reasoning 40 for 60 in 35 minutes and Quantitative Aptitude 40 for 50 in 35 minutes — 160 questions, 200 marks, 125 minutes — with sectional and total cut-offs. There is no interview; allotment is on mains marks. Both papers deduct 0.25 marks per wrong answer.

How many vacancies are there in IBPS Clerk 2026?

11,403 indicative vacancies across 37 states and UTs, led by Uttar Pradesh 1,731, Karnataka 1,414, Maharashtra 1,051, West Bengal 946, Gujarat 698, Tamil Nadu 675, Madhya Pradesh 570, Bihar 491 and Punjab 481, with Union Bank of India yet to report. You apply for one state only, and allotment is made against the vacancies the banks finally report.

What is the IBPS Clerk salary?

Customer Service Associates join the clerical scale of ₹24,050–64,480 settled by the 12th bipartite settlement, with two advance increments for graduates in most banks taking the starting basic to ₹26,730, plus dearness allowance, HRA, transport and special allowances. SBI states about ₹46,000 a month gross at Mumbai for the same scale; other banks and smaller cities are somewhat lower.

Who is eligible for IBPS Clerk 2026?

A graduate in any discipline with the result declared by 21 August 2026, aged 20 to 28 as on 1 August 2026 — born between 2 August 1998 and 1 August 2006 — with five years’ relaxation for SC and ST, three for OBC, ten for PwBD and service plus three years for ex-servicemen. You must be proficient in the specified local language of the state you apply for and have computer literacy. The fee is ₹850, or ₹175 for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen.

Is there an interview in IBPS Clerk?

No. Provisional allotment is made on main examination marks alone, within the state applied for, by category and bank preference. The only step after the mains is the local language proficiency test for candidates who cannot show the language on a class 10 or 12 certificate, plus document verification and a medical examination by the bank.

Is IBPS Clerk the same as IBPS CSA?

Yes. From the 2025 process (CSA-XV) IBPS renamed the clerical cadre recruitment CRP CSA — Customer Service Associate — and the 2026 process is CRP CSA-XVI. The post, pay scale, state-wise application and two-paper selection are the clerical recruitment previously called IBPS Clerk.
