Insurance

The public sector insurance companies — the Life Insurance Corporation and the general insurers — recruit administrative officers, assistants and specialist cadres through their own examinations. In shape these follow the banking model closely: a preliminary screen, a main examination, and for officer posts an interview.

For candidates already preparing for banking exams, insurance recruitment is close to a free extension. The reasoning, quantitative aptitude and English content is shared almost entirely, and the addition is a body of insurance-specific awareness that takes weeks rather than months to acquire.

The recruitments

What insurance recruitment looks like

Officer recruitment — Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer and similar — generally uses a preliminary examination in English, reasoning and quantitative aptitude, followed by a main examination that adds general and insurance awareness, and then an interview. Assistant cadre recruitment follows the same pattern without the interview, and frequently includes a regional language requirement.

Where insurance differs from banking

  • Insurance awareness replaces banking awareness — principles of insurance, life and general insurance products, IRDAI and its role, regulation, reinsurance and claims. A distinct body of knowledge.
  • Specialist cadres exist — actuarial, legal, medical, engineering and IT streams, recruited with their own professional papers.
  • Descriptive papers appear more often — several insurance recruitments include a descriptive component testing written expression.
  • Regional language requirements — assistant cadre recruitment frequently expects proficiency in the language of the state applied for.

Preparation

Adding insurance to a banking preparation

  1. Keep your banking aptitude preparation as the base. Reasoning, quantitative aptitude, data interpretation and English transfer almost completely.
  2. Add insurance awareness as a bounded project. Principles, products, regulation and industry structure. A few weeks of reading covers what is asked.
  3. Follow insurance industry news alongside banking news. The current affairs component leans towards the sector.
  4. Practise the descriptive component if your target includes one. Letter and essay writing under time, which objective practice does not build.

Questions

Insurance — FAQs

How do insurance exams differ from banking exams?

Structurally they are very similar — preliminary screen, main examination, and an interview for officer posts — and the reasoning, quantitative aptitude and English content is shared almost entirely. The substantive difference is that insurance awareness replaces banking awareness: principles of insurance, life and general insurance products, the role of IRDAI, regulation, reinsurance and claims. That is a bounded body of knowledge that takes weeks rather than months to acquire.

Can I prepare for banking and insurance exams together?

Yes, and it is the efficient approach. Treat your banking preparation as the base and add insurance awareness as a separate short project, alongside following industry news for the sector-leaning current affairs component. If your target recruitment includes a descriptive paper — several do — add letter and essay practice under time, since objective preparation does not build that skill.

What are the specialist cadres in insurance recruitment?

Alongside generalist administrative officer posts, the public sector insurers recruit specialists in actuarial, legal, medical, engineering, accounts and information technology streams. These carry their own professional qualification requirements and their own subject papers in addition to the common aptitude sections, so candidates with a relevant professional background face a substantially different examination from generalist applicants.
