AILET 2027 Exam Date, Registration, Exam Pattern, Fee, Eligibility, Seats and Free AILET Mock Tests

AILET is the entrance test for National Law University, Delhi, which does not participate in CLAT and conducts its own admission process. It is a shorter, more concentrated paper than CLAT, built around three sections rather than five, and it competes for a small number of seats at a single institution.

Because it is one university with limited seats, the competition is intense, and because it is a separate examination on a separate date, most serious law aspirants sit both. The preparation overlaps almost entirely — the differences are in emphasis and pace rather than in content.

CLAT and AILET in the same fortnight

CLAT 2027 is on 6 December and AILET 2027 on 13 December 2026. The English and reasoning preparation is shared, but AILET has no legal-reasoning or quantitative section, 150 questions instead of 120 in the same two hours, and 70 of its marks in logical reasoning — the section that also breaks ties. Test cities need at least 200 candidates or the centre is not created and the second or third preference is allotted.

Overview

What AILET is, and who it suits

National Law University Delhi conducts AILET for admission to its five-year integrated law programme and to its postgraduate and doctoral programmes. It sits outside the CLAT consortium, which means candidates seeking admission there must sit this examination specifically, on its own date, with its own application.

The undergraduate paper is organised into three sections — English language, current affairs and general knowledge, and logical reasoning — which is a narrower structure than CLAT’s five. Like CLAT, it has moved towards comprehension-based questioning, though it has historically retained more direct questioning in the general knowledge section.

How AILET compares with CLAT

  • Three sections rather than five — with legal reasoning and quantitative techniques not appearing as separate sections in the current structure.
  • A single university — so a smaller number of seats and a correspondingly sharp cutoff.
  • More direct general knowledge questioning — historically less exclusively passage-based than CLAT’s current affairs section.
  • A separate date and application — which makes sitting both entirely practical.

Confirm the current section structure

AILET has revised its paper structure more than once, including which sections appear and how they are weighted. Because that determines whether you need to prepare separately for a legal reasoning or mathematics component, read the current prospectus rather than relying on a description of an earlier format.

Eligibility

Who can apply for AILET

AILET eligibility, from the AILET 2027 eligibility pages and admission announcement on nationallawuniversitydelhi.in. The qualifying result must be produced by the cut-off date notified with the result; a candidate placed in compartment that year is ineligible.

Also from the portal

  • Reservation — NLU Delhi’s seat matrix applies central reservation with Delhi-domicile and other categories as published; unfilled foreign and OCI seats go to the general list.
  • Fee exemption — SC, ST and women candidates below the poverty line pay no application fee.
  • Test cities — 32 cities; a centre needs 200 candidates, otherwise the next preference is allotted.

Selection process

How AILET selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
AILET — the written test120 minutes, 150 questions (UG) or 100 (LL.M.), one afternoon sessionUG: three sections — English 50, Current Affairs and GK 30, Logical Reasoning 70 — one mark each with 0.25 deducted per wrong answer; legal principles may appear in the reasoning section but no legal knowledge is needed. LL.M.: 100 questions from the branches of law with the same deduction.
Result and merit listCategory-wise merit on AILET marks with the tie-break rulesTies in the UG test are broken on the Logical Reasoning score, then age, then a draw of lots; in the LL.M. on age, then a draw. Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates are ranked separately on their qualifying marks and their unfilled seats pass to the general list.
Counselling and admission at NLU DelhiNLU Delhi’s own counselling roundsShortlisted candidates pay a counselling fee (refunded on exit or adjusted against the fee on admission), verify documents and the qualifying result by the cut-off date, and join the Dwarka campus; hostel allotment is by distance and reservation, not by rank.

Exam pattern

AILET exam pattern and marking

The AILET exam pattern below is the test scheme for 2027 on nationallawuniversitydelhi.in: a two-hour paper of 150 one-mark questions in three sections for the UG programme and 100 questions for the LL.M., with 0.25 deducted per wrong answer in both.

AILET UG paper (B.A. LL.B. Hons.). 120 minutes, 150 marks.
SectionQuestionsMarksContent
A — English Language5050Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and usage
B — Current Affairs and General Knowledge3030Current events, static GK, legal and constitutional developments
C — Logical Reasoning7070Verbal and analytical reasoning; legal principles may be used to test logical aptitude but no legal knowledge is required
Total150150−0.25 per wrong answer (four wrong answers cost one mark)
AILET LL.M. paper. 120 minutes, 100 marks.
ItemDetail
Questions100 multiple-choice questions from the different branches of law, one mark each
Marking−0.25 per wrong answer
Tie-breakOlder candidate, then a computerised draw of lots

Seventy of 150 in reasoning

AILET’s weight sits in Logical Reasoning — nearly half the marks and the tie-breaker — and it has no legal reasoning or maths section, so a CLAT candidate switching in the week between the two tests should spend it on reasoning sets and speed: 150 questions in 120 minutes is 48 seconds a question against CLAT’s minute.

Study plan

How to prepare for AILET

AILET rewards fast, accurate reading and reasoning with a quarter-mark deduction and 110 seats, and it comes a week after CLAT, so the preparation is the CLAT one with the balance shifted to reasoning and English and a rule for the deduction.

Ten-week plan for AILET 2027 (13 December 2026).
WeeksWorkOutput
1–4English comprehension and grammar daily; logical reasoning sets — arrangements, syllogisms, critical reasoning, series — 30 questions a day; current affairs notebookReasoning accuracy above 85 per cent
5–8Sectional tests at speed: 70 reasoning questions in 55 minutes, 50 English in 40, 30 GK in 15Section times fixed
9CLAT week — the shared preparation carries; two AILET mocks afterwardsAttempt count for the −0.25
10Previous AILET papers from the portal; admit card and centreReady for 13 December

What the 110 do

  • They bank Logical Reasoning — seventy marks and the tie-break.
  • They attempt with a threshold — a −0.25 loses on a blind guess; one eliminated option makes it worth it.
  • They use the official papers — previous AILET B.A. LL.B. and LL.M. papers are downloadable from the test-pattern pages.
  • They register early — a test city needs 200 candidates to exist.

Questions

AILET — FAQs

When is AILET 2027?

Sunday 13 December 2026 from 2 to 4 p.m., one week after CLAT. NLU Delhi notified it on 23 July 2026; applications opened on 7 August and close on 10 November 2026, with admit cards on 30 November. The test is held in 32 cities.

What is the AILET exam pattern?

For the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks in 120 minutes across three sections — English Language 50, Current Affairs and General Knowledge 30 and Logical Reasoning 70 — with 0.25 deducted per wrong answer and no legal knowledge required. For the LL.M., 100 questions from the branches of law in 120 minutes with the same deduction.

How many seats does AILET fill?

110 B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) seats on AILET merit, plus five each for foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates admitted directly on qualifying marks, and 70 LL.M. seats on merit plus five and five; one supernumerary seat is reserved for Kashmiri migrants. Unfilled foreign and OCI seats pass to the general list.

Who is eligible for AILET 2027?

For the UG programme, class 12 with 45 per cent (42 for OBC, 40 for SC, ST and PwD) or appearing in 2027; for the LL.M., an LL.B. with 50 per cent (45 for SC, ST and PwD) or final year. There is no age limit. Foreign nationals are exempt from the test and need 65 per cent at class 12.

What is the AILET fee?

₹3,000 for General, OBC, EWS and foreign-national applicants and ₹1,000 for SC, ST and PwD applicants; SC, ST and women candidates below the poverty line are exempt. The counselling fee paid later is refunded if the candidate exits or adjusted against the fee on admission.

How is AILET different from CLAT?

AILET admits to NLU Delhi alone, which stays outside CLAT; it has 150 questions in two hours against CLAT’s 120, no legal-reasoning or quantitative section, and 70 of its marks in Logical Reasoning, which is also the tie-breaker. Both deduct 0.25 per wrong answer, and both are in December — 6 December for CLAT 2027 and 13 December for AILET 2027.

Are there free AILET mock tests?

Yes. The free AILET mock tests here follow the 2027 scheme — 50 English, 30 Current Affairs and GK and 70 Logical Reasoning questions in 120 minutes with the −0.25 deduction — and report section-wise scores. NLU Delhi’s previous question papers, downloadable from the test-pattern pages, are the best complement.
