Government Exams

States

Every state runs its own recruitment for administrative, police, teaching and departmental posts through its public service commission and other recruitment boards. Together these fill more posts than all the central examinations combined, and they are the most accessible route into government service for candidates who want to work in their own state.

They share a shape with the central examinations — a written stage, sometimes a mains, sometimes physical standards — and they differ in two ways that matter enormously. They are usually conducted in the state language, and they carry a substantial block of state-specific content that no national study material covers.

What states recruit for

The main categories of state recruitment

State Public Service Commission examinations
The state equivalent of the Civil Services Examination, filling deputy collector, deputy superintendent of police and other administrative posts through a preliminary, mains and interview structure. Group I in most states, with Group II and below covering junior administrative posts.
Police recruitment
Constable and Sub-Inspector posts filled through the state police recruitment board, with a written test followed by physical efficiency, physical standard and medical stages.
Group examinations
Departmental and clerical posts filled through combined examinations, generally at graduate or class 12 level, with a single written stage.
Teacher recruitment
State teacher eligibility tests establishing eligibility, followed by recruitment examinations run by the state education department.

What differs from central exams

Two things national preparation will not cover

  • State-specific content — the state’s own history, geography, districts, rivers, culture, prominent figures, administrative structure and government schemes. This is frequently a substantial block of marks and is absent from every national study source.
  • The state language — most state examinations are conducted in the regional language alongside English or Hindi, and many include a language paper. Reading speed in that language is part of what is being tested.

Both are addressable, and both are best addressed from state sources: the state board’s textbooks for history, geography and culture, and past papers from that state’s own examinations for everything else. A candidate preparing for state examinations entirely from national material is preparing for a different paper.

Eligibility

Domicile and local status

State recruitment generally applies domicile or local candidate rules, based on where you were born, resided or studied, and these determine which posts and which reservation categories you can access. The rules and the documentation required differ between states and are a matter of paperwork rather than preparation — but they affect outcomes just as directly, and they are worth confirming well before an application window opens.

Questions

States — FAQs

How do state exams differ from central government exams?

In two ways that matter for preparation. State examinations are usually conducted in the regional language alongside English or Hindi, and many include a language paper testing it directly. And they carry a substantial block of state-specific content — the state’s history, geography, districts, culture, prominent figures and administrative structure — which no national study material covers. A candidate preparing entirely from national sources will find a meaningful part of the paper unfamiliar.

Can I apply for another state’s recruitment?

Sometimes, but domicile and local candidate rules generally restrict access to particular posts and reservation categories, and many state examinations expect proficiency in the state language. The rules differ between states and are based on where you were born, resided or studied. Because they are documentation matters rather than preparation ones, they are easy to overlook and expensive to discover late — confirm them well before an application window opens.

Can I prepare for state and central exams together?

Substantially yes. The general studies, reasoning, quantitative aptitude and English content overlaps heavily, so one core preparation serves both. What you must add for a state examination is its state-specific content and, where required, the state language. The practical approach is to build the shared foundation first, then add the state layer from the state board’s textbooks and that state’s own past papers.
