Why does the JEE Advanced marking scheme change every year?
Because adaptability is part of what the examination assesses. A fixed pattern rewards candidates who have drilled that pattern; a variable one rewards candidates who understand the subject and can work out how to play under whatever rules apply. The practical consequence is that the first two minutes of each paper, spent reading the instructions properly, are among the most valuable of the three hours — and that carrying last year’s assumptions into this year’s paper is a common and entirely avoidable loss.
How is JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?
The syllabi overlap in outline but not exactly, and the depth differs sharply. JEE Main questions generally test one concept at a time and reward speed and accuracy; JEE Advanced questions typically combine two or three concepts and require multi-step reasoning on problems that cannot be answered by recognising a familiar type. Advanced also runs two compulsory papers in one day, uses a variable marking scheme with partial credit, and is sat only by candidates who reach a defined band in Main.
How should I prepare differently for JEE Advanced?
By working genuinely hard problems slowly, rather than covering more syllabus. The examination tests whether you can combine concepts on a problem nobody has shown you, and that ability comes from sustained productive struggle — attempting a difficult problem for twenty minutes before it yields, and resisting the urge to read the solution first. Alongside that, work a decade of past papers for breadth of question format, since the format you meet is not announced in advance.
When is JEE Advanced 2027?
Not yet announced. The 2026 date — Sunday 17 May — was posted on jeeadv.ac.in on 5 December 2025 with the brochure on 30 December, and registration ran from 23 April to 5 May 2026 after the JEE Main Session 2 result; JEE Advanced 2027 should be announced on the same timetable by the organising IIT, which rotates each year (IIT Roorkee organised 2026).
What was the JEE Advanced 2026 cut-off?
For inclusion in the rank lists: 92 aggregate and 8 per subject out of 360 for the Common Rank List (25.56 and 7.30 per cent), 82 and 7 for OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS, 46 and 4 for SC, ST and every PwD list, and 23 and 2 for the preparatory course. These are the qualifying marks; the closing ranks for IIT seats are set by the JoSAA rounds.
How many candidates qualified JEE Advanced 2026, and who topped?
56,880 of the 1,79,694 who appeared in both papers (1,87,389 registered), including 10,107 women. Shubham Kumar of the IIT Delhi zone was CRL 1 with 330 out of 360, Kabeer Chhillar second with 329 and Jatin Chahar third with 319; Arohi Deshpande was the top woman at CRL 77 with 280. The IIT Madras zone had the most qualifiers (14,294) and the most in the top 500 (174).
What is the JEE Advanced exam pattern?
Two compulsory three-hour computer-based papers on one day, each with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections, 180 marks a paper and 360 in all. Question types — single correct, multiple correct with partial marking, numerical value and others — and the marking scheme of each section are fixed in the paper itself and change year to year, with full, partial, zero and negative marks.
Who is eligible for JEE Advanced?
Candidates in the top 2,50,000 of JEE Main Paper 1 by category; born on or after 1 October 2001 for the 2026 examination (1996 for SC, ST and PwD); at most two attempts in two consecutive years; class 12 first appeared in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; and never previously admitted to an IIT. IIT admission also needs 75 per cent (65 for SC, ST, PwD) or the top 20 percentile in class 12.
What is the JEE Advanced fee?
₹3,200 for Indian nationals, reduced to ₹1,600 for women of all categories and for SC, ST and PwD candidates; OCI/PIO (I) candidates pay the same; foreign nationals USD 100 (SAARC) or 200 (non-SAARC); centres abroad USD 200–300. Registration is incomplete until the fee is paid.
Is there negative marking in JEE Advanced?
In most sections, yes, and the amount varies: in the 2026 papers single-correct questions cost one mark for a wrong answer, multiple-correct questions cost one (with partial credit of +3, +2 or +1 for partly right answers that contain no wrong option), and numerical-value questions carried no deduction. The exact scheme is printed at the head of every section of the paper.
What was the JEE Advanced 2026 marks vs rank?
The result of 1 June 2026 fixed the scale: CRL 1 scored 330 of 360, the top woman (CRL 77) scored 280, and the last qualifying candidate in the common rank list had 92 aggregate marks with at least 8 in each subject. Between those points, IIT Roorkee’s published rank list — not a third-party predictor — is the only exact marks-to-rank mapping; the qualifying marks by category (82 for OBC-NCL and EWS, 46 for SC, ST and PwD) mark where each list ends, and the JoSAA closing ranks that follow the result show what rank each IIT programme took.
When will the JEE Advanced 2027 exam date be announced?
The organising IIT posts the date on jeeadv.ac.in in early December — the 2026 date (17 May) was announced on 5 December 2025 and the information brochure followed on 30 December. Expect the JEE Advanced 2027 date in December 2026, registration in late April 2027 and the examination on a Sunday in late May 2027.
Are there free JEE Advanced mock tests?
Yes. The free JEE Advanced mock tests here follow the two-paper, 360-mark format with the mixed question types and the section-wise marking schemes of the 2026 papers, including partial marking on multiple-correct questions, and report the score against the 2026 rank-list minimums. Take the official practice tests on jeeadv.ac.in as well for the exact interface.
