SBI PO 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Salary and Free Mock Tests

SBI PO is the Probationary Officer recruitment for the State Bank of India, conducted by the bank itself rather than through the IBPS common process. It is widely regarded as the most demanding of the mainstream banking examinations, and the reputation is earned — not because the syllabus is larger, but because the questions are framed less predictably.

It also has a final stage that no other banking recruitment shares in the same form: a psychometric assessment feeding into a group exercise and interview. Candidates who prepare only for the written papers arrive at that stage without having thought about it at all.

Overview

What SBI PO is, and who it suits

The State Bank of India runs its own officer recruitment rather than participating in the IBPS common process. The Probationary Officer role begins with a structured training period and leads into branch management, credit, operations and specialist functions across the country’s largest banking network.

What distinguishes SBI PO from its IBPS counterpart is not the syllabus, which is broadly the same, but the framing. SBI questions tend to be phrased in ways that resist pattern-matching — data interpretation sets built around unfamiliar arrangements, reasoning puzzles with unusual constraints, English passages that ask for inference rather than location. Candidates who have prepared by memorising question types find that preparation transfers less well here than they expected.

The stages, and what each is really assessing

  • Preliminary examination — speed and selection under twenty-minute sectional limits. Qualifying only.
  • Main examination — depth and adaptability across data analysis, reasoning with computer aptitude, English, and general economy and banking awareness.
  • Descriptive paper — a letter and an essay, carrying meaningful weight and written under time pressure.
  • Psychometric test, group exercise and interview — the psychometric assessment informs the interview panel; the group exercise assesses how you contribute to a discussion rather than how much you say.

The final stage rewards preparation too

Group exercises and interviews are frequently treated as unpreparable. They are not. Reading widely on banking and the economy, practising structured spoken argument, and thinking honestly about your own record are all preparation — and they distinguish candidates at a stage where written scores are already close together.

Eligibility

Who can apply for SBI PO

Eligibility is judged as on the dates in the advertisement and verified with original documents at the interview and at joining. SBI is unusual in accepting final-year students at the preliminary stage, and in the narrow age band.

Qualification

  • Degree — A graduation in any discipline from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government, passed on or before 30 September 2026. Candidates in the final year or semester may apply provisionally and must produce proof of passing by 30 September 2026 if called for the interview; integrated dual degree holders must show the IDD passing date on or before the same date.
  • Professional qualifications — The advertisement states that candidates with qualifications such as medicine, engineering, chartered accountancy and cost accountancy are also eligible.
Age 21–30 years as on 1 April 2026 — born between 2 April 1996 and 1 April 2005 — with these relaxations of the upper limit.
CategoryRelaxation
SC and ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Persons with benchmark disabilities10 years (General/EWS), 13 years (OBC), 15 years (SC/ST)
Ex-servicemen and commissioned officers (ECO/SSCO) with at least 5 years’ service5 years

Other conditions

  • Nationality — Indian citizens, and subjects of Nepal and Bhutan and the migrated persons of Indian origin listed in the advertisement with a certificate of eligibility.
  • Number of chances — Unreserved and EWS candidates may take four chances; OBC candidates and PwBD candidates of the UR, EWS and OBC categories seven; SC and ST candidates have no limit. Appearing in the main examination counts as a chance — the preliminary examination does not — counted from the examination of 18 April 2010.
  • Fee — ₹750 for General, OBC and EWS candidates; nil for SC, ST and PwBD; online only, non-refundable.
  • Posting — Anywhere in India; probationary officers are posted to branches and moved across the circle during probation.

Selection process

How SBI PO selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Phase I — preliminary examinationOnline, 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutesEnglish Language 40 questions, Quantitative Aptitude 30 and Reasoning Ability 30, one mark each, with a separate 20-minute timer on every section. No sectional cut-off: a category-wise merit list on aggregate marks shortlists about ten times the vacancies for Phase II. 0.25 deducted per wrong answer; preliminary marks are then discarded.

Phase III — psychometric test, group exercise and interview50 marks; final merit from Phase II (75) and Phase III (25)A psychometric test for personality profiling, then a group exercise and an interview conducted at circle centres, together carrying 50 marks. Application to appointment

How to apply for SBI PO 2026, what the three phases involve, and how the final merit is built

The steps in the order they happen, with the fees and windows the advertisement of 18 June 2026 specifies.

The SBI PO process, from registration to appointment

  1. Register on the SBI careers site during the window The link on sbi.co.in/web/careers/current-openings leads to the IBPS-hosted registration portal. Register with an e-mail address and mobile number that remain valid until joining, fill the form, and upload a photograph, signature, left-thumb impression and handwritten declaration to the advertisement’s size and format rules. A live photograph is captured through the webcam or phone at the time of application.
  2. Choose the centre and, for clerical posts, one state Junior Associate candidates apply against the vacancies of one state or union territory, sit the examination in that state and later prove proficiency in its specified local language. PO candidates choose preliminary and main examination centres from the list in the advertisement; no change is allowed afterwards.
  3. Pay the fee ₹750 for General, OBC and EWS candidates, paid online between 18 June and 8 July 2026; nil for SC, ST and PwBD. The fee is not refunded or held over for another recruitment.
  4. Call letters through the same portal Call letters for each phase are released on the careers page and the portal about ten days before the date, with an information handout that gives the exact section timings and sample questions. Carry the call letter with a photo identity document and the photograph pasted on it.
  5. Phase I: preliminary examination An hour-long online paper of three separately timed sections. There is no sectional cut-off; a category-wise merit list on aggregate marks shortlists about ten times the vacancies for Phase II. Preliminary marks are then discarded.
  6. Phase II: main examination A longer online paper of separately timed sections, with a descriptive test typed on the computer immediately afterwards for the PO process. Phase II marks are what the final merit rests on.
  7. Phase II shortlist and the descriptive test Each candidate must reach a minimum score in each of the four objective tests and in the descriptive test, and a minimum aggregate; candidates numbering about three times the category-wise vacancies are shortlisted for Phase III from the top of the Phase II merit list. Mains scores are published with the Phase II result.
  8. Phase III: psychometric test, group exercise and interview Shortlisted candidates take an online psychometric test for personality profiling, then attend a group exercise and interview at a circle centre with the call letter, biodata form and original documents. Phase III carries 50 marks in total.
  9. Final merit, result and joining Phase II marks out of 250 are normalised to 75 and Phase III marks out of 50 to 25; the final merit list is the total out of 100 by category, and the result is published on the careers page with roll numbers. Selected candidates go through a medical examination and document verification, execute the ₹2 lakh three-year bond and join as probationary officers on probation under the bank’s recruitment policy, with training at SBI’s institutes.

The descriptive test has its own cut-off

A candidate who clears the objective sections but falls below the minimum in the 30-mark descriptive test is not shortlisted for Phase III. Practise typing a letter and an essay in 30 minutes; the test is in English only and is administered immediately after three hours of objective paper.

Exam pattern

SBI PO exam pattern and marking

The SBI PO exam pattern below is the scheme in the advertisement of 18 June 2026 and the preliminary and main examination information handouts. Every section is separately timed and one fourth of a question’s marks is deducted for a wrong answer in every objective paper. Study plan

How to prepare for SBI PO

SBI PO is the hardest of the bank PO papers: mains questions are a level above IBPS, Data Analysis carries 60 marks for 30 questions with a calculator on screen, and the descriptive test and Phase III together carry a quarter of the final score. The prelims, with no sectional cut-off, rewards a strong English section — 40 of the 100 marks — more than any other bank prelims does.

A six-month plan

  1. Months 1–2: foundations Arithmetic to speed, the reasoning families (puzzles, seating, input–output, syllogism, inequality, coding, data sufficiency), English grammar, vocabulary and daily reading, and a daily banking, economy and current affairs routine.
  2. Months 3–4: mains depth High-level DI (caselets, missing data, mixed charts) and data sufficiency with calculator practice; high-level puzzles and computer aptitude; cloze, error, para-jumble and reading comprehension at SBI length; ten timed essays and letters for the descriptive test.
  3. Month 5: full mocks A prelims mock every second day on the three 20-minute timers, a mains mock every week with the descriptive test typed straight after, and an error log by topic.
  4. Month 6: revision and Phase III preparation Revise from notes and the error log; keep banking awareness current to the mains date; then group-discussion practice on economic themes and an interview file built around your graduation subject, banking basics and current events.

Where the marks are in the 2026 scheme

  • Reasoning and Data Analysis: 120 of 200 objective marks — Two marks a question with 0.5 off per error. Accuracy on the sets you attempt decides the rank.
  • General Awareness, Economy and Banking: 60 marks in 45 minutes — Sixty recall questions; six months of daily reading is the preparation.
  • English: 40 prelims marks, 20 mains marks and the whole descriptive test — Daily reading and weekly writing practice pay across three phases.
  • Phase III: 25 of the final 100 — The group exercise and interview separate candidates who tied in the mains; prepare them as seriously as a paper.

Questions

SBI PO — FAQs

How important is the SBI PO descriptive paper?

More important than most candidates treat it. A letter and an essay in thirty minutes carries marks that count towards the main examination total, and it is written immediately after roughly three hours of objective testing, so fatigue is part of the challenge. The practical advice is to write at least some of your practice pieces straight after a full-length objective mock rather than fresh, because the exam never offers you the easier version of the task.

How should I prepare differently for SBI PO?

Deliberately practise with unfamiliar material rather than drilling recognised patterns. Seek out data interpretation presentations and puzzle formats you have not met, and build the habit of spending the first thirty seconds understanding a set’s structure before calculating anything. Alongside that, read a business newspaper daily — it serves the awareness section, the English section, the essay and the interview at the same time.

What is the SBI PO 2026 notification date and exam date?

The advertisement CRPD/PO/2026-27/09 was published on 18 June 2026 with registration from 18 June to 8 July 2026. Preliminary call letters were issued from the second and third week of July, the preliminary result was published in August, and the main examination was held on 12 September 2026. The Phase III group exercise and interview and the final result are to be notified; in the 2025 cycle they came in November and on 19 December respectively.

What is the SBI PO exam pattern for 2026?

Phase I prelims: 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes — English 40, Quantitative Aptitude 30, Reasoning 30 — each on a 20-minute timer, with no sectional cut-off and about ten times the vacancies shortlisted. Phase II mains: Reasoning and Computer Aptitude 40 questions for 60 marks in 50 minutes, Data Analysis and Interpretation 30 for 60 in 45 minutes, General Awareness, Economy and Banking 60 for 60 in 45 minutes and English 40 for 20 in 40 minutes — 170 questions, 200 marks, three hours — then a 30-mark descriptive test in 30 minutes, with sectional cut-offs in every test. Phase III is a psychometric test, group exercise and interview for 50 marks; final merit is Phase II normalised to 75 plus Phase III to 25. Every objective paper deducts 0.25 marks per wrong answer.

How many vacancies are there in SBI PO 2026?

1,500 — 1,446 regular and 54 backlog — divided as SC 234, ST 144, OBC 390, EWS 144 and General 588, with reservations for persons with benchmark disabilities within them.

What is the SBI PO salary?

Probationary Officers join JMGS-I on the scale of ₹48,480–85,920 with four advance increments, plus dearness allowance, HRA or lease rental, CCA, provident fund, NPS, leave fare concession and medical benefits. SBI puts the cost to company at the initial scale at about ₹20.43 lakh a year at Mumbai. A ₹2 lakh bond binds selected officers to serve three years.

Who is eligible for SBI PO 2026?

A graduate in any discipline — or a final-year student who can show the degree by 30 September 2026 — aged 21 to 30 as on 1 April 2026, born between 2 April 1996 and 1 April 2005, with five years’ relaxation for SC and ST, three for OBC, ten to fifteen for PwBD and five for ex-servicemen with five years’ service. Unreserved and EWS candidates get four chances, OBC and PwBD (UR, EWS, OBC) seven, SC and ST no limit, with only main examination appearances counted. The fee is ₹750, nil for SC, ST and PwBD.

Is there an interview in SBI PO?

Yes. Phase III is a psychometric test, a group exercise and an interview carrying 50 marks together. Phase II marks are normalised to 75 and Phase III to 25, and the final merit list is the total out of 100 by category, so Phase III is a quarter of the outcome.

How is SBI PO different from IBPS PO?

SBI recruits for one bank and IBPS for eleven; SBI’s prelims has no sectional cut-off and weights English at 40 marks, while IBPS applies sectional cut-offs; SBI’s mains is three hours with a 30-mark descriptive test and a calculator in Data Analysis, and is set at a harder level; SBI adds a group exercise to the interview and weights Phase III at 25 per cent against IBPS’s 20; and SBI pays four advance increments on the same scale. Eligibility ages differ too — 21–30 for SBI as on 1 April 2026, 20–30 for IBPS as on 1 July 2026.
