IBPS PO 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Salary and Free Mock Tests

IBPS PO is the common recruitment for Probationary Officer and Management Trainee posts across participating public sector banks. One examination feeds all of them, and the bank you are allotted follows from your score and the preference order you submitted rather than from a separate application.

It is the most widely attempted banking examination in the country, and its structure has one feature that dominates preparation: sectional timing in the preliminary stage. You get twenty minutes per section and cannot carry unused time forward, which turns the prelims into three short sprints rather than one hour-long paper.

What changed in the 2026 notification

The preliminary paper is no longer three sections of equal weight: Quantitative Aptitude has 35 questions for 30 marks and Reasoning 35 questions for 40 marks, with English at 30 for 30. In the main examination English drops to 20 marks for 40 questions while Reasoning, General Awareness and Data Analysis carry 60 each, the descriptive paper is 25 marks, and a personality test has been added between the main result and the interview. Read the pattern section of the notification even if you sat PO-XV.

Overview

What IBPS PO is, and who it suits

The Probationary Officer examination recruits entry-level officers for public sector banks that participate in the IBPS common process. A Probationary Officer joins on a training period and is then posted into branch banking, credit, operations or a specialist function, with a career path that leads through scale-based promotions.

Three things about the structure shape how candidates should prepare. Prelims is a purely qualifying speed test with sectional timing. The main examination is where the marks that count are earned, and it adds two subjects that prelims does not test at all — banking and economic awareness, and computer aptitude. And the descriptive paper, small as it is, is the stage most candidates neglect entirely.

What the three stages actually test

  • Preliminary examination — speed and accuracy across English, quantitative aptitude and reasoning, under twenty-minute sectional limits. Qualifying only.
  • Main examination — depth rather than speed — data analysis and interpretation, reasoning with computer aptitude, English, and general, economy and banking awareness. These marks count.
  • Descriptive paper — a letter and an essay, written in the same sitting as the main examination. Small in marks and decisive at the margin.
  • Interview — conducted by participating banks, with the final merit weighted between the main examination and the interview.

Prelims marks do not carry forward

A very high prelims score buys you nothing beyond a seat in the main examination. Candidates who spend months optimising prelims speed and arrive at mains without having studied banking awareness or data interpretation in depth are making the single most common strategic error in this exam.

Eligibility

Who can apply for IBPS PO

Eligibility is checked as on the dates in the notification and verified with original documents at the interview and at joining. A candidate who registered without meeting a condition can sit both examinations and be dropped at verification, with the fee forfeited.

Qualification as on 21 July 2026

  • Degree — A graduation in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. The mark sheet or degree certificate must be in hand on the day of registration and the percentage entered in the form; the result must have been declared on or before 21 July 2026.
  • Computer literacy — Working knowledge of computer systems is expected, and several banks ask for it at the interview.
Age 20–30 years as on 1 July 2026 — born between 2 July 1996 and 1 July 2006 — with these relaxations of the upper limit.
CategoryRelaxation
SC and ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Persons with benchmark disabilities10 years
Ex-servicemen and commissioned officers (ECO/SSCO) with at least 5 years’ military service, released otherwise than by dismissal or discharge5 years

SC, ST and OBC relaxation is cumulative with only one of the other categories, and the certificates are produced in original at joining. The maximum age applies to General and EWS candidates.

Other conditions

  • Nationality — Indian citizens, and subjects of Nepal and Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who came before 1 January 1962 and persons of Indian origin migrated from the listed countries, with a certificate of eligibility where required.
  • Fee — ₹850 including GST for all candidates except SC, ST and PwBD, who pay ₹175; online only, non-refundable, with bank charges borne by the candidate.
  • One application — Multiple registrations are rejected; the last complete one counts only if the fee was paid on it.
  • Pre-examination training — SC, ST, OBC and minority candidates may opt for free online training in the form.

Selection process

How IBPS PO selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Preliminary examinationOnline, 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutesEnglish Language 30 questions for 30 marks, Quantitative Aptitude 35 questions for 30 marks, Reasoning Ability 35 questions for 40 marks, each section timed separately at 20 minutes. Candidates must clear the cut-off in every section; IBPS shortlists a fixed number per category for the main examination and the preliminary marks are then discarded. 0.25 deducted per wrong answer.
Main examination — objectiveOnline, 170 questions, 200 marks, 160 minutesReasoning 40 questions for 60 marks in 45 minutes; General, Economy and Banking Awareness with Digital and Financial Awareness including RBI circulars, 50 questions for 60 marks in 35 minutes; English Language 40 questions for 20 marks in 35 minutes; Data Analysis and Interpretation 40 questions for 60 marks in 45 minutes. Sectional and total cut-offs apply. 0.25 deducted per wrong answer.
Main examination — descriptiveOnline, 2 questions, 25 marks, 30 minutesAn essay and a comprehension task typed in English, broadly on economic and social issues, emerging trends in banking and technology, current events and ethics. The notification says it may be evaluated by an automated scoring mechanism.
Personality test and interviewPersonality test online; interview 100 marks by the banksCandidates shortlisted on main examination marks take a personality test arranged by IBPS and are then interviewed by the participating banks under a nodal bank in each state. The interview carries 100 marks with 40 per cent (35 for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD) to qualify. Final merit is main examination 80 : interview 20, and provisional allotment to a bank follows merit and the preferences given.

Application to allotment

How to apply for IBPS PO 2026, what the two examinations and the interview involve, and how a bank is allotted

The whole process runs through one registration on ibps.in. These are the steps in the order they happen, with the fees and windows the notification of 1 July 2026 specifies.

The IBPS PO process, from registration to allotment

  1. Register once on ibps.in during the window Registration is a single online form for both the preliminary and main examinations, on the link that goes live on ibps.in on the opening day. You need a working e-mail address and mobile number that stay with you until provisional allotment, and scans made to the notification’s specification: a photograph (20–50 KB), signature (10–20 KB, not in capitals), left-thumb impression (20–50 KB) and a handwritten declaration (50–100 KB), all .jpeg. A live photograph is also captured through the webcam or phone camera at the time of application.
  2. Choose the state, centre and — where it applies — the medium For the state-wise processes you apply against the vacancies of one state or union territory only and sit the examination there; for the PO process you choose preliminary and main examination centres. The medium of the objective tests, other than English, is English or Hindi and, for the state-wise processes, the regional languages listed for that state. Preferences for banks are collected later, before allotment.
  3. Pay the fee ₹850 including GST, or ₹175 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates, paid online between 1 and 21 July 2026 by debit or credit card, net banking, UPI or wallets. The fee is not refunded or held over.
  4. Edit window A two-day window opens after registration closes, notified on ibps.in, in which the form can be modified on payment of the edit charge. Nothing can be changed after it.
  5. Pre-examination training, then the call letter Candidates from the SC, ST, OBC and minority communities (and, for some processes, ex-servicemen) who opt for it in the form may be offered online pre-examination training in the month before the preliminary examination. Call letters are released on ibps.in about a week to ten days before each examination; the preliminary call letter is stamped at the venue and must be kept for the main examination.
  6. Preliminary examination A one-hour online paper with a separate timer on each section. You must clear the cut-off in each section as well as overall; the number shortlisted for the main examination is fixed by IBPS by category, and preliminary marks are then discarded.
  7. Main examination A longer online paper, again with a separate timer per section, that the merit list is built from. Sectional cut-offs apply. Scores are normalised across sessions and released after the process is complete.
  8. Results, scores and the next step Results appear as a login on ibps.in; scorecards follow. Where the process has an interview, the shortlist and interview call letters are issued through the same login and the interview is conducted by the participating banks under a nodal bank.
  9. Personality test and interview Candidates above the sectional and total cut-offs of the main examination are shortlisted by category for a personality test arranged by IBPS and then for an interview of 100 marks conducted by the participating banks under a nodal bank in each state, with the call letter through the login. The minimum in the interview is 40 per cent (35 for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD).
  10. Final merit, preferences and provisional allotment The final score is main examination 80 and interview 20. Candidates give an order of preference for the participating banks, and IBPS makes a provisional allotment by merit, preference and the reported vacancies; the allotment is valid for one year and the bank completes document verification, a medical examination and joining formalities.

Choose bank preferences on posting policy, not brand

The preference order is collected once and drives allotment. Banks differ in probation length, service bond, transfer policy and the states they post first-year officers to; a few marks in the interview can move you between two banks with very different first postings. Read each bank’s own recruitment terms before you rank them.

Exam pattern

IBPS PO exam pattern and marking

The IBPS PO exam pattern below is the scheme in the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification of 1 July 2026. Every section is timed on its own — unused minutes do not carry over — and one fourth of a question’s marks is deducted for a wrong answer in every objective paper. The full treatment, with the syllabus for each section, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

One fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for every wrong answer in every objective paper; a question left blank costs nothing. Study plan

How to prepare for IBPS PO

IBPS PO is a mains examination with a prelims gate in front of it. The prelims is three 20-minute sprints where selection of questions matters more than solving; the mains rewards banking awareness, data interpretation under time and puzzle-heavy reasoning at three marks a question or thereabouts, with a wrong answer costing a quarter of that. Plan for the mains from the first week and let prelims speed be a by-product.

A six-month plan for a first attempt

  1. Months 1–2: foundations Arithmetic and simplification to speed, the reasoning families that recur (seating and floor puzzles, syllogism, inequality, coding, blood relations, input–output), and English grammar and reading. Start a daily banking and economy awareness routine — RBI circulars, monetary policy, government schemes, financial terms — because that section alone is 60 mains marks.
  2. Months 3–4: mains depth and DI Data interpretation in every format (tables, bar, line, pie, caselet, radar and mixed), quadratic comparisons, number series and data sufficiency; high-level puzzles; cloze, error and para-jumble practice; computer aptitude basics. Sectional tests daily on the mains timers.
  3. Month 5: full mocks on the sectional timers A prelims mock every second day as three timed sections, a mains mock every week with the descriptive paper typed in 30 minutes, and an error log by topic. Practise choosing which 20 of 35 questions to attempt in each prelims section.
  4. Month 6: revision and the examination window Revise from your own notes and the error log, keep current banking awareness going to the mains date, and prepare the interview file — graduation subject, banking basics, current economic events, and why banking — while the mains result is awaited.

Section-by-section priorities in the 2026 scheme

  • Reasoning and Data Analysis: 120 of 200 mains marks — The two 45-minute sections decide the merit list. Accuracy on puzzles and DI sets is worth more than attempting everything.
  • General, Economy and Banking Awareness: 60 marks in 35 minutes — Recall, so the fastest marks in the paper for a candidate who has read daily for six months, and the section where a wrong guess is cheapest to avoid.
  • English: 20 mains marks but a prelims gate — Thirty prelims questions in 20 minutes with a sectional cut-off; do not neglect it because its mains weight is low.
  • Descriptive: 25 marks — A structured essay and a comprehension answer in 30 minutes, typed. Practise ten essays on banking, economy, technology and ethics themes before the mains.

Questions

IBPS PO — FAQs

Do IBPS PO prelims marks count in the final merit?

No. The preliminary examination is purely qualifying — it decides who sits the main examination and is then discarded. The final merit list is built from the main examination and the interview. This is the most important strategic fact about the exam, because it means preparation should be aimed at the mains syllabus from the beginning, with prelims speed treated as a by-product rather than the goal.

What is sectional timing in IBPS PO prelims?

Each of the three prelims sections carries its own twenty-minute limit, and time you do not use in one section cannot be carried into another. Practically, this means the paper is a selection exercise rather than a solving exercise — with thirty-five quantitative aptitude questions in twenty minutes, you are choosing which questions to attempt as much as you are answering them.

How long does IBPS PO preparation take?

Six to eight months of consistent daily study is realistic for a candidate starting from a normal graduate base. The constraint is not the volume of syllabus but the fact that three of the decisive components — banking awareness, data interpretation speed and puzzle-solving instinct — all build slowly through daily practice and respond poorly to intensive short-term effort.

What is the IBPS PO 2026 notification date and exam date?

The CRP PO/MT-XVI notification was published on 1 July 2026 with registration from 1 to 21 July 2026. The preliminary examination is on 22 and 23 August 2026 and the main examination on 4 October 2026 per the IBPS calendar, with the preliminary result in September, the main result and personality test in November, interviews in November–December 2026 and provisional allotment in January 2027. Dates are tentative until the call letter.

What is the IBPS PO exam pattern for 2026?

Prelims: 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes — English 30 questions for 30 marks, Quantitative Aptitude 35 for 30, Reasoning 35 for 40 — each section timed at 20 minutes with sectional cut-offs, qualifying only. Mains: Reasoning 40 questions for 60 marks in 45 minutes, General, Economy and Banking Awareness 50 for 60 in 35 minutes, English 40 for 20 in 35 minutes, Data Analysis and Interpretation 40 for 60 in 45 minutes — 170 questions, 200 marks, 160 minutes — followed by a 25-mark descriptive paper of an essay and a comprehension task in 30 minutes. A personality test and a 100-mark interview follow; final merit is mains 80 and interview 20. Every objective paper deducts 0.25 marks per wrong answer.

How many vacancies are there in IBPS PO 2026?

6,715 indicative vacancies across the participating banks: Bank of Baroda 1,900, Canara Bank 1,500, Bank of Maharashtra 1,100, Indian Overseas Bank 550, Punjab National Bank 504, Bank of India 500, Central Bank of India 500 and Punjab & Sind Bank 161, with Indian Bank, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India yet to report. Provisional allotment is made against the vacancies the banks finally report.

What is the IBPS PO salary?

Probationary Officers join Junior Management Grade Scale I on the 12th bipartite pay scale of ₹48,480–85,920, starting at a basic of ₹48,480 plus dearness allowance, house rent or leased accommodation, city compensatory allowance, NPS contribution, medical and leave fare concession. SBI, which adds four advance increments on the same scale, states a cost to company of about ₹20.43 lakh a year at Mumbai; IBPS banks are somewhat lower and vary by posting. Most banks take a service bond of two to three years.

Who is eligible for IBPS PO 2026?

A graduate in any discipline with the degree result declared by 21 July 2026, aged 20 to 30 as on 1 July 2026 — born between 2 July 1996 and 1 July 2006 — with five years’ relaxation for SC and ST, three for OBC, ten for PwBD and five for ex-servicemen with at least five years’ service. Indian citizens and the other nationalities listed in the notification may apply. The fee is ₹850, or ₹175 for SC, ST and PwBD.

Is there an interview in IBPS PO, and how much does it count?

Yes. Candidates shortlisted on main examination marks take a personality test and then a 100-mark interview conducted by the participating banks, with 40 per cent (35 for reserved categories) to qualify. The final score is 80 per cent main examination and 20 per cent interview; preliminary marks are not counted.

Are there free IBPS PO mock tests on the 2026 pattern?

Yes. The free IBPS PO mock test here follows the 2026 prelims scheme — 30 English, 35 Quantitative Aptitude and 35 Reasoning questions, each section on its own 20-minute timer, with 0.25 deducted per wrong answer — and reports section-wise scores so you can see whether you would clear each sectional cut-off. Mains-pattern sectional tests cover Reasoning, Data Analysis and General Awareness on the 2026 timings.
