Online TOEFL Coaching and the TOEFL iBT Guide 2026

Looking for online TOEFL coaching? Make sure it teaches the test as it has run since January 2026. TOEFL iBT is the English test of ETS, accepted by more than 13,000 institutions in over 160 countries and the most widely used in North American admissions. It is taken on a computer at a test centre or, as the Home Edition, at home under a live proctor, and it is scored centrally rather than by an examiner in the room. From 21 January 2026 it is a different test from the one described in most preparation books: ETS replaced the long academic passages and integrated lecture tasks with twelve shorter task types, made the test adaptive, cut it to about two hours, and moved scoring to a 1–6 band scale aligned to the CEFR.

The four sections remain reading, listening, writing and speaking, but the content now runs from everyday English — completing words, reading a notice, writing an email, repeating what you hear — up to an academic passage, an academic talk and a discussion post, with a recorded interview closing the speaking section. Each section is reported on the 1–6 scale in half bands, the overall score is their average, and until January 2028 the score report also carries a comparable total on the old 0–120 scale so that institutions still quoting the old requirement can read it.

Checked 12 September 2026 on ets.org. The redesigned TOEFL iBT has been the only version administered since 21 January 2026; the two-year transition during which score reports carry both the 1–6 and the 0–120 total runs to January 2028, and institutions are still updating their published requirements from one scale to the other. Candidates taking the test for an Australian visa must select “Taking TOEFL for Australia” at registration, a requirement in force since the same date. Registration is year-round at test centres and for the Home Edition, and the fee for India is US$173 excluding taxes.

Overview

What TOEFL is, and who it suits

Reading has three task types: Complete the Words, a text with letters missing from words that tests vocabulary and grammar at speed; Read in Daily Life, short practical texts of the kind met on a campus or in a workplace; and Read an Academic Passage, a longer university-level text with comprehension questions. Listening has four: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement and Listen to an Academic Talk. Writing has three: Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion, the last carried over from the old test. Speaking has two: Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview, a recorded simulated interview.

The test adapts, so the number of items and the time vary a little from candidate to candidate; ETS gives about 50 reading items in 30 minutes, 47 listening in 29, 12 writing in 23 and 11 speaking in 8, and asks candidates to allow about two hours. Scores are reported on a 1–6 scale for each section and overall, the overall being the average of the four rounded to the nearest half band, and ETS publishes the correspondence with the old scale: an overall 5 sits at 95 and above on the 0–120 total, 5.5 at 107 and above, 4.5 at 86 and above and 4 at 72 and above.

What makes the redesigned TOEFL distinctive

  • Everyday and academic English in one test — the early tasks in each section are practical and short; the later ones are academic, which is where the old test lived entirely.
  • Adaptive and about two hours — shorter than IELTS and close to PTE Academic in length, with the difficulty and count of items adjusting as you go.
  • A CEFR-aligned 1–6 scale — section and overall scores in half bands, with the 0–120 equivalent alongside for two years.
  • Central scoring and a home option — no examiner at the centre; the Home Edition is the same test with a live human proctor.

If you prepared for the old TOEFL

Material written before 2026 describes three or four long reading passages, lectures with note-taking, integrated speaking and writing tasks and a 0–30 section score. None of that is on the current test except Write for an Academic Discussion. The reading and listening practice is still useful for the academic passage and the academic talk; the integrated-task drills are not. ETS’s own practice tests are rebuilt for the new format.

Online TOEFL coaching

Online TOEFL coaching for the 2026 test: what a course must now include

TOEFL changed on 21 January 2026, and most online TOEFL coaching has not caught up. Courses built on integrated tasks, lecture note-taking and a 0–120 target teach a test that no longer exists. A course worth paying for teaches the twelve new task types — from Complete the Words to Take an Interview — the adaptive two-hour sitting, and the 1–6 scale with its 0–120 equivalent.

What online TOEFL coaching has to deliver

  • The twelve task types, not the old four — Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage; four listening types; Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion; Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.
  • Speed and accuracy on short items — the reading and writing bands are built from many quick items; coaching should drill vocabulary, grammar and sentence-building against a clock.
  • Recorded speaking with feedback — Listen and Repeat and the interview are recorded and scored centrally; a trainer should listen to your recordings for accuracy, stress and fullness of answer.
  • ETS practice on the 1–6 scale — TOEFL Practice Online tests rebuilt for the 2026 format, read against the band a university requires and its 0–120 equivalent.
Batch or one-to-one
Vocabulary, grammar and reading strategy suit a batch; the discussion post, the email and recorded speaking need individual feedback.
How the trainer knows the test
Ask the trainer to name the task types in the 2026 test and to explain how a 5 on the 1–6 scale maps to 0–120. A course that answers with “integrated writing” or “note-taking strategies” is teaching the old test.
What a fair course costs
Online TOEFL coaching in India is usually a short course; the US$173 test fee is the benchmark. Pay for feedback on writing and recorded speaking and for format-correct practice.

Study plan

How to prepare for TOEFL

A six-week plan for the 2026 test

  1. Week 1 — learn the twelve tasks Work ETS’s sample questions for every task type and sit one TOEFL Practice Online test for a baseline on the 1–6 scale.
  2. Weeks 2–3 — the short items Daily vocabulary and grammar work for Complete the Words, Build a Sentence and Listen and Choose a Response; speed with accuracy is the skill.
  3. Weeks 2–5 — the academic items One academic passage and one lecture extract a day with comprehension questions; note the main idea, purpose and detail structure.
  4. Weeks 3–5 — writing and speaking, reviewed Two discussion posts and two emails a week to a timer, marked for register and reasoning; daily Listen and Repeat drills and recorded interview answers played back for stress and fullness.
  5. Week 5 — second practice test Compare section bands with the target in both scales; put the last week on the lowest section.
  6. Week 6 — register and sit Register at least seven days ahead to avoid the express fee; scores arrive three days after the test, so a retake three days later is possible if a section falls short.

Questions

TOEFL — FAQs

What changed in the TOEFL iBT in 2026?

From 21 January 2026 ETS replaced the long passages, lectures and integrated tasks with twelve shorter task types across the same four sections, made the test adaptive and about two hours long, and moved scoring to a 1–6 scale in half bands aligned to the CEFR. Score reports also show a comparable 0–120 total until January 2028 so that institutions still quoting the old scale can read them. Write for an Academic Discussion is the one task carried over.

What is the TOEFL iBT exam pattern now?

Reading, about 50 items in 30 minutes — Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage; Listening, about 47 in 29 — Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, Listen to an Academic Talk; Writing, about 12 in 23 — Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion; Speaking, about 11 in 8 — Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview. The test adapts, so counts and times vary slightly, and it can be taken at a centre or at home.

How does the new TOEFL 1–6 score compare with the old 0–120?

ETS publishes the correspondence: an overall 6 corresponds to 114 and above, 5.5 to 107 and above, 5 to 95 and above, 4.5 to 86 and above, 4 to 72 and above and 3.5 to 58 and above. Section scores map similarly — a reading 5 is 24–26 on the old 0–30 scale, a speaking 5 is 25–26. The report shows both until January 2028.

What does the TOEFL cost in India and how soon are scores released?

US$173 excluding taxes, with express registration $49, rescheduling $69 and additional score reports $29 each. Scores appear in the ETS account three days after the test, with the exact date shown at the end of the test, and the PDF report follows within 24 to 48 hours. Scores are valid for two years.

Can the TOEFL be taken at home?

Yes, as the TOEFL iBT Home Edition on your own computer with a live human proctor — the same test, timing and scoring as the centre version. Universities accept it; some visa authorities do not, and Australia requires the “Taking TOEFL for Australia” selection at registration for a test to count for a visa.

TOEFL or IELTS — which should I take?

Both are accepted almost everywhere for admission. TOEFL is now about two hours, adaptive, recorded rather than interviewed, and scored on 1–6 with results in three days; IELTS is 2 hours 45 minutes with a face-to-face speaking test, band scores 0–9, and results in one to two days on computer. Visa acceptance differs — IELTS is accepted by all four immigration authorities that require an English test — so check the visa rule before the admission rule.

Is my TOEFL coaching out of date?

If it teaches integrated speaking and writing tasks, lecture note-taking, three or four long reading passages or a 0–120 target without the 1–6 scale, yes. ETS replaced the test on 21 January 2026 with twelve new task types in an adaptive two-hour sitting scored 1–6. Only Write for an Academic Discussion survived. Ask any provider to name the current task types before paying.

What should online TOEFL coaching cover in 2026?

The twelve task types and their timing; speed and accuracy on the short reading and writing items; the email and the academic discussion post with marked feedback; recorded speaking — Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview — reviewed by a trainer; and ETS practice tests scored on the 1–6 scale, read against the band and the 0–120 equivalent your university quotes.

How do I register for the TOEFL in India?

Create an ETS account with your name exactly as in your passport, choose a test centre or the Home Edition and a date at least seven days ahead — express registration is open until two days before for $49 more — name up to four free score recipients, and pay US$173. Rescheduling costs $69 and cancellation refunds half the fee, both with at least four days’ notice.

What happens on TOEFL test day?

At a centre: ID check with the passport, photograph, security screening, then about two hours through reading, listening, writing and speaking with a headset. For the Home Edition the live proctor checks ID, the room and the computer first. At the end you see unofficial reading and listening scores and choose whether to report or cancel; official scores appear in three days.

How often can I retake the TOEFL?

As often as you like, but not more than once in any three-day period, and you cannot hold two appointments within three days of each other. Scores are valid for two years and MyBest superscores combine the best section scores from tests in that period.

Does the TOEFL work for a UK or Australian visa?

For the UK it is not a Secure English Language Test, so a Student visa applicant who needs a SELT must take IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI or another listed test unless the university assesses English itself. For Australia the Department of Home Affairs accepts the TOEFL iBT taken at a centre with “Taking TOEFL for Australia” selected at registration, at the minimum on its table; the Home Edition is not accepted.
