Student Visa Process

An admission offer is the beginning of studying abroad, not the end. Between the offer and the flight sits a visa application whose rules are written by an immigration authority, not a university, and which tests three things the university did not: that the money to pay for the course and to live exists and can be shown, that the applicant genuinely intends to study and, for most routes, to leave when the course ends, and that English has been proved in the form the authority accepts. The tests on this site — IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL, OET, CELPIP, the Duolingo English Test — matter to a visa officer only as far as the authority’s own list allows.

This guide follows the four routes Indian students take most: the United States’ F-1 visa, obtained at an interview after the university issues a Form I-20; the United Kingdom’s Student visa, applied for online on a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies; Canada’s study permit, which since 2024 has needed a provincial attestation letter as well as a letter of acceptance; and Australia’s subclass 500, decided against a Genuine Student requirement on a Confirmation of Enrolment. Every figure below is from the authority’s own page at the date checked, and every one of them changes.

Overview

What Student Visa Process is, and who it suits

Each authority wants the same three things in its own form. The offer: an I-20 issued by the school and registered in SEVIS for the US; a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, a reference number issued by a licensed sponsor, for the UK; a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution plus a provincial attestation letter for Canada; a Confirmation of Enrolment for Australia. The money: the US officer asks how all costs will be paid; the UK sets a precise sum held for 28 days; Canada sets a living-cost figure per family size and asks for a plan for later years; Australia sets 12 months of living costs and fees, or a parent’s or partner’s annual income of at least AUD 87,856. The intent: the US and Canada ask for evidence that the applicant will leave at the end; Australia applies a Genuine Student test; the UK relies on the sponsor’s assessment.

English proof is where the tests on this site meet the visa. The UK accepts a Secure English Language Test at CEFR B2 for degree-level study, or the university’s own assessment; Australia publishes a table of accepted tests with minimum scores — IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 47, TOEFL iBT 67, CELPIP 7 — lowered when an English course is packaged with the degree, and refuses any test taken at home; Canada and the US leave English to the institution, though an officer may ask. A test taken for admission may or may not serve the visa, and the order in which they are booked should follow the stricter rule.

What decides most refusals

  • Funds that cannot be traced — a large deposit made days before the application, an account in a relative’s name without a sponsorship letter, or a loan without a sanction letter.
  • A course that does not fit — a change of field or a step down in level with no explanation in the statement or interview.
  • An English test the authority does not accept — an at-home test for Australia, a non-SELT test for a UK applicant who needs one, a score older than two years.
  • Missed timing — a UK application more than six months before the course, a US interview slot that does not exist before the start date, a Canadian attestation letter issued after the province’s cap is reached.

Dates that bind

A US student visa may be issued up to 365 days before the course start, but the holder cannot enter more than 30 days before. A UK Student visa can be applied for six months before the course and normally allows arrival a month before it. The UK Graduate visa shortens from two years to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. Canada’s living-cost figure rose on 1 September 2026 and rises each year. Australia processes student applications under Ministerial Direction 115 for applications lodged from 14 November 2025, which sets priorities by provider and sector.

The process

How a student visa application works

The four countries differ in detail, but the sequence is the same: an offer, a financial case, an English test, an application, biometrics and, in the US, an interview.

Rules and fees change; the immigration authority’s own page is the document that binds.
StageFormatWhat it involves
Secure the offer documentI-20 · CAS · letter of acceptance and PAL/TAL · CoEThe US school issues a Form I-20 after admission and registers the student in SEVIS. The UK sponsor issues a CAS, usually after a deposit, valid for a single application. The Canadian institution issues a letter of acceptance and, in most cases, a provincial or territorial attestation letter once the offer is accepted and tuition paid in part or full; Quebec adds a CAQ. The Australian provider issues a Confirmation of Enrolment after the deposit, and Overseas Student Health Cover is arranged for the whole stay.
Build the financial caseBank statements, sponsor letters, loan sanctions, income evidenceThe UK requires the first year’s course fee as stated on the CAS plus £1,529 a month for up to nine months in London or £1,171 outside, held for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of the application; a loan or sponsor letter substitutes. Canada requires the first year’s tuition, transport and living costs — C$23,448 for a single applicant from 1 September 2026, C$29,192 for two — and a plan for later years. Australia requires 12 months of living costs at AUD 29,710, 12 months of course fees and travel, or a parent’s or partner’s income of at least AUD 87,856 in the previous 12 months, with schooling costs for children. The US sets no figure but asks how all costs will be met.
Prove English in the accepted formSELT at B2 for the UK; the Home Affairs table for Australia; institution rules for Canada and the USUK degree-level applicants prove CEFR B2 through an approved SELT, a UK or English-taught degree with an Ecctis assessment, or the higher-education provider’s own assessment. Australia accepts listed tests taken within two years and refuses at-home tests; minimums are IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 47, TOEFL iBT 67, CELPIP 7 and OET on its own scale, lower with a packaged English course. Canada and the US leave the requirement to the institution.
Apply and payOnline application, fees and surcharges, biometricsUS: pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of US$350, complete the DS-160, pay the US$185 application fee and book an interview. UK: apply online up to six months before the course, pay £558 and the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 a year, prove identity through the app or a visa centre. Canada: apply online, pay C$150, give biometrics, submit a letter of explanation and a medical examination if the stay exceeds six months. Australia: apply through ImmiAccount, pay from AUD 2,500, and attach the Genuine Student statement and evidence the document checklist tool asks for.
Interview, decision and travelConsular interview for the US; decision times vary by countryThe US decision is made at the interview, with digital fingerprints taken and issuance possible up to 365 days before the course. The UK usually decides within three weeks for applications from outside the UK. Canada’s processing time varies by country and is published online. Australia’s times depend on the provider’s evidence level and the Ministerial Direction priorities. Entry windows follow: 30 days before the course for the US, a month for the UK for courses over six months.

Questions

Student Visa Process — FAQs

What are the steps for a US F-1 student visa?

Admission to an SEVP-approved school, which issues a Form I-20 and registers you in SEVIS; payment of the SEVIS I-901 fee of US$350; the online DS-160 application with a photo; the US$185 application fee; an interview at the US embassy or consulate with passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt and I-20, and possibly transcripts, test scores, funding evidence and proof of intent to depart; fingerprints at the interview. The visa can be issued up to 365 days before the course, but entry is allowed no more than 30 days before it starts.

How much money do I need to show for a UK Student visa?

The first year’s course fee as stated on your CAS, plus living costs of £1,529 a month for up to nine months for courses in London or £1,171 a month outside London, held in your account for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of the application. Loan or sponsorship evidence can substitute. The visa fee is £558 and the Immigration Health Surcharge £776 a year.

What does a Canadian study permit require?

A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, a provincial or territorial attestation letter in most cases — obtained through the institution after accepting the offer and paying tuition — a valid passport and photos, proof of funds for the first year’s tuition, transport and living costs, a letter of explanation, and a medical examination if staying more than six months. The living-cost requirement is C$23,448 for a single applicant for applications from 1 September 2026, and the fee is C$150.

What is the Genuine Student requirement for an Australian student visa?

Applicants for the subclass 500 must show that studying in Australia is the primary purpose of the visa, with a statement and evidence about their circumstances, the value of the course and their history. They must also hold a Confirmation of Enrolment and Overseas Student Health Cover, show 12 months of living costs of AUD 29,710 plus course fees and travel or a parent’s or partner’s income of at least AUD 87,856, and meet the English requirement with a listed centre-based test. The fee starts at AUD 2,500.

Which English tests are accepted for student visas?

The UK accepts an approved Secure English Language Test at CEFR B2 for degree-level study, or a UK or English-taught degree, or the university’s own assessment. Australia publishes a table — IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 47, TOEFL iBT 67, CELPIP 7, OET on its own scale, lower where an English course is packaged — and does not accept any test delivered at home. Canada and the US leave English to the institution. The Duolingo English Test is widely accepted for admission but rarely for a visa.

How early should I apply for a student visa?

The UK accepts applications up to six months before the course and usually decides within three weeks. A US visa can be issued up to 365 days before the start date, and interview slots should be booked as soon as the I-20 and SEVIS fee are in hand. Canada and Australia accept applications once the offer documents exist and publish variable processing times. In every case the financial evidence should be assembled months earlier, since the UK’s funds must be held for 28 days.

What can I do after the course ends?

The UK Graduate visa allows two years’ stay for applications on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months from 1 January 2027, three years for a doctorate. Canada offers a post-graduation work permit subject to programme and timing rules. Australia offers the Temporary Graduate visa, subclass 485, for qualifying graduates. In the US, F-1 students may apply for Optional Practical Training related to their field.
