Exam Updates
The vacancy count is the most direct determinant of your chances in any recruitment, and the least discussed. It sets how many candidates will be selected, which in turn sets where the cutoff falls — and a substantial change in vacancies moves the cutoff more than any change in paper difficulty does.
It also carries information that shapes your application. Post-wise and category-wise vacancy tables tell you which posts have the most openings, which determines how your preference order is likely to play out, and whether the post you actually want is realistically reachable at the rank you expect.

Vacancies 2026 — checked 19 September 2026
Counts are tentative or indicative as each notification states them and are revised by corrigenda — IBPS re-issued its RRB annexure twice this month with the total unchanged — and fixed as final vacancies later in the cycle, as SSC did for CGL 2025 at 15,118.

Reading a vacancy table
Preferences
In examinations that fill many posts from one merit list — SSC CGL most notably — you submit a preference order, and allocation follows from your rank and that order together. A post with very few vacancies will be exhausted at a high rank; a post with many will remain available further down. That means a preference order built purely on desirability, without regard to vacancy counts, can result in being allocated a post far down your list while a middling preference you would have been happy with went to someone ranked below you.

Questions
Among the cycles now running, SSC GD Constable 2026 (25,487) and RRB Group D CEN 09/2025 (22,195, with 52.4 lakh applications) are the largest, followed by IBPS RRB XV (13,745), SSC CGL 2026 (about 12,256), IBPS Clerk (11,403), RRB ALP (11,127) and RRB NTPC’s two notifications (5,810 graduate and 3,058 undergraduate). SBI’s clerical recruitment adds 7,967 plus a 1,538-post special drive. The state commissions are smaller — APPSC’s twenty notifications total 892, UPPSC PCS about 500, KPSC KAS 319 — and UPSC ESE 2027 offers 480.
Directly and substantially. The cutoff is the score of the last candidate selected, so a larger vacancy count means more candidates are selected and the last one scored less — lowering the cutoff. A reduction in vacancies raises it. A significant change in the vacancy count moves the cutoff more than a change in paper difficulty typically does, which is why the vacancy table is worth reading as carefully as the pattern section of a notification.
A post with very few vacancies will be exhausted at a high rank; one with many remains available further down the merit list. A preference order built purely on desirability, without regard to how many openings each post has, can leave you allocated something far down your list while a middling preference you would have accepted happily went to a lower-ranked candidate. Reading the post-wise and category-wise table before submitting preferences is worth the time.
Frequently not. Vacancy counts are often described as provisional and are revised after the notification, sometimes substantially, as departments confirm their requirements. That means both an increase and a decrease are possible before the result, and a candidate planning around a figure published at notification stage should treat it as an indication rather than a fixed number.
