RRB NTPC 2026 Notification, Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Vacancies and Free Mock Tests

RRB NTPC recruits for the non-technical popular categories across railway zones — Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, the clerk and accounts cum typist posts, Trains Clerk and Traffic Assistant. A single process covers both undergraduate-level and graduate-level posts, with candidates applying against the level their qualification permits.

Two things about it are worth knowing before you start. General awareness is the largest section in both computer-based tests, which is unusual among competitive exams and makes a daily current affairs habit unusually valuable. And scores are normalised across shifts, so your raw mark is not the number that decides your result.

Cut-offs so far

For RRB Chandigarh, the CBT 1 cut-offs of 11 June 2026 for the graduate posts it notified were 82.51 and 83.54 normalised marks out of 100 for UR, 77.96 and 80.38 for OBC, 74.78 and 77.96 for SC and 68.26 and 69.15 for ST; each RRB publishes its own list. Cut-offs are on normalised marks and vary by RRB, post and category.

Overview

What RRB NTPC is, and who it suits

The Non-Technical Popular Categories recruitment fills the clerical, commercial and operational posts that keep the railway network running — the people who manage stations, schedule goods movement, handle commercial transactions and staff the traffic control functions. Posts are advertised at two qualification levels, and candidates apply against the posts their qualification permits.

It is one of the largest recruitments in the country by applicant numbers, which means the process is long: two computer-based tests, a skill test for certain posts, document verification and a medical examination, spread over many months. Planning for that duration is part of preparing for it.

Posts filled through RRB NTPC

  • Graduate-level posts — Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist, Traffic Assistant and similar.
  • Undergraduate-level posts — Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Trains Clerk, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk and similar.
  • Posts with a typing requirement — the clerk cum typist roles require a typing skill test, which is qualifying.
  • Posts with an aptitude test — Station Master and Traffic Assistant require a computer-based aptitude test with its own qualifying standard.

Medical standards vary by post

Railway posts are assigned medical classifications, and safety-related roles such as Station Master carry stricter vision requirements than clerical posts. Because a medical disqualification arrives after every written stage has been cleared, it is worth checking the classification for the posts you intend to apply for at the start rather than at the end.

Eligibility

Who can apply for RRB NTPC

Eligibility is judged as on the closing date of applications for qualification and as on 1 January 2026 for age, and verified with originals at document verification — a candidate awaiting a final result on the closing date is not eligible to apply. You apply to one RRB and choose only the posts whose parameters you meet.

Other conditions

  • Fee — The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  • One RRB, one application — Candidates choose one RRB and rank posts and zones within it; multiple applications lead to rejection of all.
  • Medical standard A2 — Distant vision 6/9, 6/9 without glasses (no fogging test) and near vision Sn 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses, plus colour, binocular, night and mesopic vision tests — the standard that Station Master, Goods Train Manager and Traffic Assistant candidates must clear, and which no LASIK or corrective surgery can satisfy.
  • Serving employees — Must produce a no-objection certificate from the employer at document verification.

Selection process

How RRB NTPC selection works

Each stage in order, and what it actually tests.

Stages change between cycles. Confirm the structure in the notification for the cycle you are sitting.
StageFormatWhat it involves
CBT 1 — first stage computer-based testObjective, 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutesGeneral Awareness 40 questions, Mathematics 30 and General Intelligence and Reasoning 30, one mark each, common to every post in the CEN. One third of a mark is deducted per wrong answer. CBT 1 is a screening test: normalised marks shortlist 15 times the community-wise vacancies of the RRB for CBT 2, and the marks are not carried forward.
CBT 2 — second stage computer-based testObjective, 120 questions, 120 marks, 90 minutesGeneral Awareness 50 questions, Mathematics 35 and General Intelligence and Reasoning 35, one mark each, on the same syllabus at greater depth. Normalised CBT 2 marks are the merit list for posts without a skill test and the shortlist for the typing or aptitude test for the others.
Computer-based typing skill test or computer-based aptitude testQualifying, by postTypist posts: eight times the vacancies are called to a typing test of 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi on a personal computer without editing tools, qualifying only. Station Master and Traffic Assistant: eight times the vacancies take the CBAT, a battery of psychological tests in which a T-score of 42 in every battery is needed; the merit for these posts is CBT 2 at 70 per cent and CBAT at 30 per cent.
Document verification and medical examinationOne candidate per vacancyCandidates equal to the vacancies are called to verification of qualification, age, category and other certificates, then to a medical examination against the standard of the post — A2 for Station Master, Goods Train Manager and Traffic Assistant, B2 for the commercial posts, C2 for the clerical posts. Zones are allotted by merit and the preferences given at application.

Application to appointment

How to apply for RRB NTPC, what the two CBTs, the skill tests and verification involve, and how zones are allotted

The steps as they run in the 2025-26 cycle, with the fees and rules the two notifications specify.

The RRB NTPC process, from account to appointment

  1. Create an account on rrbapply.gov.in One account serves every RRB notification: mobile number, e-mail, name, parents’ names and date of birth exactly as on the matriculation certificate, and Aadhaar verification. Details in the account form — and the RRB chosen — cannot be changed later, even in the paid modification window, so they must be right at this step.
  2. Choose one RRB and rank the posts You apply to one Railway Recruitment Board only, and are examined and considered against that RRB’s vacancies; a second application to any RRB cancels all of them. Inside the chosen RRB you rank every post and zone you are eligible for and willing to join — posts left without a preference are treated as declined, and preferences are final.
  3. Fill the form with a live photograph The form asks for qualification, category and the certificates you will produce at verification, captures a live photograph through the webcam or phone camera at the time of application, and takes uploads of the photograph, signature and any category certificates to the CEN’s specification.
  4. Pay the fee The examination fee is ₹500 for general candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded (less bank charges) to those who appear in the first CBT; SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minority and Economically Backward Class candidates pay ₹250, refunded in full on appearing. The refund goes only to the bank account seeded with the candidate’s Aadhaar, so the account has to be linked before the application is submitted.
  5. Use the modification window if you must A ten-day window opens after applications close in which any field other than the account details and the chosen RRB can be corrected on payment of ₹250 per occasion, which is not refunded.
  6. Application status, city intimation, then the e-call letter The RRBs publish a notice for checking whether your application was accepted. About ten days before your date the exam city and date, and the travel authority for SC and ST candidates, become visible in the login; the e-call letter itself is released about four days before the examination. Aadhaar-linked biometric authentication is done at the centre, so carry the original Aadhaar card and the same photo identity document named in the application, and keep Aadhaar biometrics unlocked.
  7. The computer-based test Objective questions in the language chosen at application, with a separate scribe-eligible duration. There is no sectional timing; the whole paper is one clock. Mock tests to familiarise candidates with the interface are put on the RRB website before the examination.
  8. Results, scores and the objection tracker After each CBT the question paper, responses and provisional answer key are opened in the login with an objection window; results are published RRB by RRB as PDF lists of roll numbers with category-wise normalised cut-offs, and individual scores can be viewed in the login for a limited period.
  9. CBT 1 result and the 15-times shortlist Each RRB publishes the roll numbers shortlisted for CBT 2 with category-wise cut-offs on normalised marks. Fifteen times the community-wise vacancies of the RRB are shortlisted, above the minimum qualifying marks, with post preferences taken into account; candidates who used a reservation continue in that category throughout.
  10. CBT 2, then the skill test by post CBT 2 marks alone shortlist for document verification for Goods Train Manager, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk and Trains Clerk. For the typist posts, eight times the vacancies go to the computer-based typing skill test, qualifying only; for Station Master and Traffic Assistant, eight times the vacancies go to the CBAT with a vision certificate in the prescribed form, and the merit is CBT 2 at 70 per cent and CBAT at 30 per cent.
  11. Document verification, medical and zone allotment Candidates equal to the vacancies are called with originals; ties are broken by age, then alphabetically. Empanelment follows the medical examination, and the RRB allots the zone or production unit by merit and the preferences given, after which the railway issues the appointment.

Rank every post you would take

Preferences are collected once, at application, and a post with no preference is treated as declined. Because merit is post-wise and the cut-offs differ, ranking the typist and clerk posts below the ones you want costs nothing and often decides whether you are empanelled at all.

Exam pattern

RRB NTPC exam pattern and marking

The RRB NTPC exam pattern below is the scheme in CEN 06/2025 and CEN 07/2025, which is identical for the graduate and undergraduate posts. Both tests are one clock with no sectional timing, and the section-wise split is described in the notifications as indicative. The full treatment, with the syllabus, is on the exam pattern and syllabus pages.

One third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer in every computer-based test; an unattempted question costs nothing. Where a test runs in more than one shift, marks are normalised across shifts by the RRBs’ published formula, and it is the normalised score — not the raw mark — that is compared with the cut-off and used for shortlisting. Fifteen times the vacancies are shortlisted for CBT 2 and eight times for the skill tests, per community, within the RRB.

Study plan

How to prepare for RRB NTPC

NTPC is the railway examination where general awareness decides the result: 40 of 100 marks in CBT 1 and 50 of 120 in CBT 2, all recall, with a third of a mark off for each guess. Mathematics and reasoning are class-10 level and reward speed. Prepare the awareness section daily from the first week and the other two for accuracy under the one-clock format.

A five-month plan

  1. Months 1–2: the syllabus at CBT 1 depth Arithmetic (number system, fractions, LCM and HCF, ratio, percentage, mensuration, time and work, speed and distance, interest, profit and loss), elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics; the reasoning families (series, coding, syllogism, puzzles, Venn diagrams, data sufficiency, statement-conclusion); and a general awareness spine — history, geography, polity, economy, science to class 10, India’s transport and railways, organisations, flagship schemes — with daily current affairs.
  2. Month 3: CBT 2 depth and the awareness bank The same topics at CBT 2 level with harder mensuration, algebra and DI; 50 awareness questions a day from a bank you build yourself; sectional tests under the 90-minute clock.
  3. Month 4: full mocks with the one-third deduction A full CBT 1 mock every second day and a CBT 2 mock every week, each scored with a third of a mark off per error, and an error log by topic. Typist candidates start 15 minutes of typing a day; Station Master and Traffic Assistant candidates read the RDSO aptitude test guide.
  4. Month 5: revision and the examination Revise from notes and the error log, keep current affairs to the examination date, and taper mocks in the final ten days.

What the pattern means for the attempt

  • Never guess across four options — A wrong answer costs a third of a mark; a blind guess loses on average. A two-option guess is worth taking.
  • Awareness first, on a budget — Forty or fifty recall questions in the first 20 minutes, skipping what you do not know, leaves an hour for the calculating sections.
  • Normalisation rewards accuracy, not attempts — Because shifts are normalised, a clean 70 in a hard shift can beat a scrappy 75 in an easy one.

Questions

RRB NTPC — FAQs

What is normalisation in RRB NTPC?

Because the exam runs across many shifts and days, and no two shifts are exactly equal in difficulty, scores are adjusted so that candidates who sat a harder shift are not penalised for it. The practical consequence is that the raw mark you calculate after the exam is not the number compared against the cutoff, and comparing raw scores with candidates who sat different shifts tells you very little about your relative position.

Which is the most important section in RRB NTPC?

General awareness, by mark weight. It is the largest section in both CBT 1 and CBT 2, together carrying more marks than either mathematics or reasoning. This inverts the usual competitive-exam priority, and it means a daily general awareness habit — static themes from one source and current affairs from one digest — is the highest-return preparation available for this exam.

Do all RRB NTPC posts require a typing test?

No. Clerk cum typist posts require a typing skill test, and Station Master and Traffic Assistant posts require a computer-based aptitude test with a minimum standard in each test battery. Both are qualifying rather than merit-counting, but failing them removes you from consideration for those posts. Since typing speed builds gradually, start practising from the beginning of your preparation rather than after the second computer-based test.

What is the RRB NTPC exam pattern for CBT 1 and CBT 2?

CBT 1 is 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes — General Awareness 40, Mathematics 30, General Intelligence and Reasoning 30 — and is a screening test whose marks are not carried forward. CBT 2 is 120 questions for 120 marks in 90 minutes — General Awareness 50, Mathematics 35, General Intelligence and Reasoning 35 — and builds the merit list. One third of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer in both, there is no sectional timing, and the pattern is the same for graduate and undergraduate posts. Typist posts add a qualifying typing test; Station Master and Traffic Assistant add a computer-based aptitude test weighted 30 per cent.

When is the RRB NTPC 2026 exam?

The 2025-26 cycle is in its later stages. For the graduate posts (CEN 06/2025), CBT 1 was held on 16–27 March 2026, CBT 2 on 10 July 2026 with its result on 27 August, and the typing skill test and aptitude test are scheduled for 24 and 30 September 2026. For the undergraduate posts (CEN 07/2025), CBT 1 was held on 7–9 May and 13–20 June 2026 with the result on 24 August, and CBT 2 was held on 17 September 2026 with its result to follow. No new NTPC notification had been issued as of 19 September 2026.

How many vacancies are there in RRB NTPC?

The 2025-26 cycle notified 5,810 graduate posts under CEN 06/2025 — Goods Train Manager 3,416, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist 921, Senior Clerk cum Typist 638, Station Master 615, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor 161 and Traffic Assistant 59 — and 3,058 undergraduate posts under CEN 07/2025 — Commercial cum Ticket Clerk 2,424, Accounts Clerk cum Typist 394, Junior Clerk cum Typist 163 and Trains Clerk 77 — distributed RRB- and zone-wise in Annexure B of each notification.

What is the RRB NTPC cut-off?

Cut-offs are published by each RRB on normalised marks, by post category and community. For RRB Chandigarh, the CBT 1 cut-offs for the graduate posts declared on 11 June 2026 were 82.51 and 83.54 out of 100 for UR, 77.96 and 80.38 for OBC, 74.78 and 77.96 for SC and 68.26 and 69.15 for ST. The minimum qualifying marks below which no one is shortlisted are 40 per cent for UR and EWS, 30 per cent for OBC and SC and 25 per cent for ST.

Who is eligible for RRB NTPC, and what is the age limit?

Graduate posts need a university degree and an age of 18 to 33 as on 1 January 2026; undergraduate posts need class 12 and an age of 18 to 30. Typist posts also require typing proficiency, tested after CBT 2. Relaxations are five years for SC and ST, three for OBC, ten to fifteen for PwBD, and service plus three to eight years for ex-servicemen. Candidates awaiting a final result on the closing date are not eligible. The fee is ₹500 with ₹400 refunded on appearing in CBT 1, or ₹250 fully refunded for SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, women, transgender, minority and EBC candidates.

What is the RRB NTPC salary?

Pay depends on the post: Station Master and Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor are Level 6 with initial pay of ₹35,400; Goods Train Manager, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist are Level 5 at ₹29,200; Traffic Assistant is Level 4 at ₹25,500; Commercial cum Ticket Clerk is Level 3 at ₹21,700; and Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist and Trains Clerk are Level 2 at ₹19,900 — plus dearness allowance, HRA, transport allowance and the railway’s other allowances.

Is there negative marking in RRB NTPC?

Yes — one third of a mark for every wrong answer in both CBT 1 and CBT 2. There is no deduction for unattempted questions and none in the computer-based aptitude test. Marks are normalised across shifts before cut-offs are applied.
