Overview
What Bihar Police Constable is, and who it suits
The 2025 advertisement distributes its 19,838 posts as 7,935 unreserved, 1,983 EWS, 3,174 SC, 199 ST, 3,571 EBC, 2,381 BC including 53 transgender and 595 BC women, with 6,717 reserved horizontally for women and 397 for freedom fighters’ descendants; half of each category’s posts are reserved for trained home guards under the 2004 notification, and 30 per cent of the Bodh Gaya battalion’s posts for candidates from the naxal-affected districts. Reservation is for permanent residents of Bihar with certificates; candidates from other states are unreserved, and by the general administration department’s resolution of 9 July 2025, applied to every pending round, the 35 per cent women’s reservation is for Bihar’s own women only. Disability reservation does not apply to the post.
The written test is set at the Bihar board’s class 10 level under rule 663 and Appendix 103 of the Bihar Police Manual, and the syllabus the board publishes is the board’s matric syllabus for the five subjects. In 2025 it ran on 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30 July and 3 August in a single shift each day at 627 centres in 38 districts, sat by 13,30,121 of 16,73,586 admitted, with scores normalised across the days by the equi-percentile method. Candidates below 30 per cent failed; five per post in each category — 99,190 by the written result of 26 September 2025, 99,690 by the final result — went to the physical test, with the home guard quota’s shortfall of 867 re-allotted to open candidates.
The physical test, event by event
- Race — 50 marks — men one mile within six minutes: under five minutes 50, to 5:20 40, to 5:40 30, to 6:00 20; women one kilometre within five minutes: under four minutes 50, to 4:20 40, to 4:40 30, to 5:00 20. A candidate who fails the race attempts nothing else.
- Shot put — 25 marks — men 16 lb to at least 16 feet: 16 to 17 feet 9, then 13, 17, 21, and 25 beyond 20 feet; women 12 lb to at least 12 feet on the same ladder to 25 beyond 16 feet. Three attempts.
- High jump — 25 marks — men at least 4 feet: 13, then 17 at 4′4″, 21 at 4′8″, 25 at 5 feet; women at least 3 feet: 13, 17 at 3′4″, 21 at 3′8″, 25 at 4 feet. Three attempts. A high jump, not a long jump.
- Measurements — height and chest for men, height and weight for women, carry no marks but a failure disqualifies. Pregnant candidates are not admitted.
The 2023 round and the cancelled examination
Advertised on 9 June 2023 for 21,391 posts, the round’s written test of 1 October 2023 was cancelled by the board’s order of 3 October after candidates were arrested across districts with electronic devices and chits and the answers were found to have reached candidates by mobile, with the two remaining dates postponed; the board’s press accounts spoke of 67 cases in 21 districts and 148 arrests, and an economic offences inquiry followed. The re-examination ran on six days from 7 to 28 August 2024 in a single shift each day, sat by 11,95,101; 1,06,955 went to a physical test from 9 December 2024 to 10 March 2025; and the final result of 9 May 2025 filled the 21,391 posts with 17,059 women and 15,422 men among the 32,489 who passed every event.
