Exam Pattern

An exam pattern is the rulebook for a recruitment: the stages, paper types, marks, duration, negative marking and the point at which a score begins to count toward final merit. Those rules differ not only between states but between posts run by the same commission.

Read the current notification before planning an attempt. A preparation built around the wrong negative-marking rate or merit stage can be well studied and still strategically wrong.

Selection architecture

The stages and what each one usually does

Preliminary examination
Usually an objective screening stage. Its marks may only decide who reaches mains, but its negative marking and cut-off still determine survival.
Main examination
The deeper scored stage, which may be objective, descriptive or mixed. Civil-services mains commonly tests analysis and written expression, while subordinate recruitment may remain objective.
Interview or personality test
Used for some officer and specialist posts. Check its weight in the final total rather than treating it as a ceremonial stage.
Skill or typing test
Common in clerical, stenography and computer-linked posts. It may be qualifying but can still eliminate an otherwise high-scoring candidate.
Physical and medical stages
Essential in police, forest, fire and uniformed recruitment. Standards and event rules are notification-specific and require early preparation.
Document verification
Confirms qualification, category, age and other claims. The required status generally has to exist by the stated cut-off date.

Before practising

Seven rules to record from the notification

  • Question and mark count for every paper — marks per question affect both pacing and the cost of an error.
  • Duration and sectional timing — separate timing prevents you from moving spare minutes between sections.
  • Negative marking and unanswered-question rules — never assume another exam’s guessing strategy applies.
  • Qualifying versus merit papers — a qualifying language paper needs safety; a merit paper needs rank-building depth.
  • Minimum marks and sectional cut-offs — a strong total may not rescue a failed compulsory section.
  • Normalization or multi-shift provisions — understand the published method without trying to predict shift advantage.
  • Later-stage requirements — typing, certificates, physical standards and medical rules belong in the plan from day one.

Between cycles

Patterns change, and preparing to an old one is a self-inflicted loss

State commissions revise paper structures more often than candidates expect — merging papers, changing the number of stages, altering negative marking, adding or removing a qualifying paper. A preparation built on a previous cycle can be thorough and still be aimed at the wrong examination.

What to do on the day a notification appears

  1. Read the pattern clause and the syllabus end to end, once, slowly. Before reading any commentary about them. Second-hand summaries of a new notification are frequently wrong in the first week.
  2. Put the new structure beside the previous one, line by line. Paper count, marks, duration, negative marking, qualifying papers, stage design. The differences are the whole of your new work.
  3. Recompute your pace. Questions divided by minutes gives seconds per question. If that number has changed, every practice session from now on has to change with it.
  4. Check the eligibility clauses against your own documents. Qualification, age reckoning date, local or zonal status and any post-specific requirement. These are settled at verification and cannot be argued there.
  5. Note the later stages and start anything slow immediately. Typing, physical standards, medical requirements and descriptive writing all take months and none can be arranged after a written result.

A corrigendum overrides the notification

Commissions frequently issue corrigenda that change dates, eligibility or paper structure after the original notification. Check the notices page of the commission’s own site before every major planning decision, and take the most recent official document rather than the one you downloaded first.
