Government Exams

Previous Year Papers

Previous papers do two different jobs. Early in preparation they reveal what the recruiting authority repeatedly asks; later they provide realistic timed practice. Using every paper as a mock from the beginning wastes the stronger first use.

Choose papers for the exact commission, post and stage. A State PSC prelims paper cannot describe a subordinate-services mains pattern merely because both contain general studies.

First use

Extract the examiner’s priorities

  1. Confirm the paper belongs to the current or comparable pattern. Record any restructuring before combining years.
  2. Solve the first paper untimed. Work every question and verify disputed answers against authoritative sources.
  3. Tag each question specifically. Use labels such as state economy—budget or arithmetic—percentage, not broad subjects alone.
  4. Count tags across multiple papers. Repeated topics form the high-return core; isolated topics form the tail.
  5. Record difficulty and question form. A topic may recur as factual recall, calculation or analysis, and the preparation should match.

Second use

Preserve some papers for honest measurement

Once you have read a paper, familiarity inflates the next score. Keep at least two suitable papers unseen for the final phase, reproduce the real duration and marking scheme, and analyse errors by cause rather than only by subject.

Quality checks before downloading

  • Prefer the recruiting authority’s paper or answer key — unofficial keys can contain unresolved errors.
  • Check stage, year, shift and paper code — similarly named recruitments may have different versions.
  • Keep corrigenda with the key — a provisional answer is not necessarily the final accepted answer.
  • Do not treat old current affairs as study material — use those questions to identify recurring categories, then study the current cycle.

Finding the archive

Where state papers are, and why the older ones are still current

State commissions differ widely in what they publish and where they keep it. The single most common reason a candidate concludes that no archive exists is that they searched under only one of the commission’s names.

  • Search under the former name as well as the current one — several state commissions have been renamed as states were reorganised or restyled. The papers issued under the earlier name are the same examination, set to the same syllabus by the same body, and discarding them removes most of the available evidence.
  • Look in the notices archive, not only the previous-papers page — answer keys and question papers are often published as dated notices rather than filed under a permanent heading.
  • Download during the objection window — where a commission publishes a provisional key and a response sheet for challenge, those files frequently disappear once the window closes.
  • Keep the corrigendum with the key — a provisional answer is not always the final accepted one, and a topic conclusion drawn from a revised answer will be wrong.
  • Use adjacent papers from the same commission — where one recruitment has a thin archive, the commission’s other papers at a similar level are the closest available practice, because the phrasing habits and the state layer are shared.

Reconstructed papers are practice, not evidence

Where a commission does not release papers, sets reconstructed from candidate memory circulate. They are useful for topic spotting and for volume, and they are unreliable for wording, difficulty and marking. Never conclude that a pattern has changed on the strength of one.
