Government Exams

Syllabus

There is no single syllabus for every state government exam. A State PSC civil-services examination, a subordinate-services paper, a police recruitment and a teaching eligibility test may share general studies and aptitude, but they test them at different depths and add different state or professional subjects.

The syllabus attached to the current notification is the boundary of your examination. Use this page to interpret that document and build a study order—not as a substitute for the notification itself.

The overlap

Subjects that recur across state examinations

AreaWhat it usually includesHow to adapt it
General studiesHistory, geography, polity, economy, science and environmentAdd the state’s history, geography, administration, economy and culture at the depth shown in past papers.
Current affairsNational, international and state developmentsGive extra weight to state schemes, budget, appointments, reports and issues named in the syllabus.
LanguageEnglish and/or the regional languageCheck whether the paper is qualifying, scored, descriptive or tied to a skill test.
Aptitude and reasoningArithmetic, data interpretation, logic and mental abilityMatch difficulty and timing to the post level rather than using one generic question bank.
Post knowledgeLaw, engineering, teaching or another disciplineUse the qualification-level syllabus and official topic list for technical recruitment.

Scope is not weight

A syllabus tells you what may be asked but rarely how often. Tag several recent papers by topic to discover the actual weighting, then study recurring areas before the long tail.

From document to plan

Convert the official syllabus into work you can schedule

  1. Copy every syllabus line into a checklist. Keep the wording and paper division used in the notification.
  2. Map recent questions to those lines. This exposes recurring themes, depth and sections that consume disproportionate time.
  3. Mark state-specific and post-specific material. These are often the areas a national exam source will not cover adequately.
  4. Assign one primary source to each cluster. Finish and revise it before adding another book or course.
  5. Attach practice and revision dates. A topic is not complete when read; it is complete when you can retrieve it and solve its questions under time.

The differentiator

The state layer is where the syllabus stops being generic

Every state commission examines a body of national material that a candidate could prepare from any competitive source. What separates candidates is the layer beneath it, and that layer is almost never covered adequately by a national book.

What a state layer usually contains

  • The state’s own history — its dynasties, its colonial or princely administration, its social reform movements, and — for states formed by reorganisation — the movement that created it. Examined in detail no national history text reaches.
  • Geography at district level — rivers and basins, irrigation projects, soils, rainfall, minerals, forests and the administrative divisions themselves, which have been reorganised in several states.
  • The state economy — agriculture, industry, power, revenue and the state’s own development programmes, with figures drawn from its statistical and economic publications rather than from national aggregates.
  • State administration and governance — the secretariat and district structure, panchayat and municipal arrangements, and the state acts a post operates under.
  • Culture, language and society — festivals, crafts, folk forms, literature and the social questions the state’s own policy addresses.

Assemble it rather than buy it

The most reliable sources for a state layer are the commission’s own past papers, the state’s statistical abstract and economic publications, state board textbooks, and department pages for scheme detail. A compilation assembled by a publisher is a summary of these, and it loses exactly the specificity the papers ask for.

Questions

Syllabus — FAQs

Is the syllabus the same for all state government exams?

No. General studies, current affairs, language and aptitude often overlap, but their depth, marks and state-specific coverage differ. Police, teaching, engineering and other specialist recruitments also add physical, skill or professional requirements.

Which syllabus should I trust?

Use the syllabus published with the current official notification or rules for the exact post. Coaching lists and older notifications can help interpret it, but they do not override the recruiting authority’s document.
