Overview
What Uttar Pradesh Technical Posts is, and who it suits
The commission’s advertisement of 17 December 2024 distributed its 582 general posts across the departments: 226 assistant engineers civil for the public works department, 107 civil and 14 electrical and mechanical for the rural Jal Nigam, 77 mechanical for the irrigation department and 20 civil for its directorate with 22 more in special recruitment, 65 civil for rural engineering, 40 civil and 8 electrical and mechanical for the development authorities, 12 for the agriculture service’s engineering branch, 7 assistant directors electrical for the energy department and 6 civil for medical health. Applications ran to 17 January 2025 at ₹125, or ₹65 for SC and ST, for candidates aged 21 to 40 on 1 July 2024 with the engineering degree the post’s rules name.
The scheme is three-stage. The preliminary is one objective paper of 150 questions and 300 marks in two hours — general knowledge 25, general Hindi 25 and engineering aptitude 100 — that qualifies fifteen candidates per post; the mains is two objective papers of two and a half hours, each of 375 marks — general Hindi with the discipline’s first paper, and general studies with its second, at three marks a question; the interview is 100, for a total of 850. One-third of the question’s marks is deducted for a wrong answer at both stages, and the minimum efficiency standard of 40 per cent, or 35 for SC and ST, applies. The preliminary of 20 April 2025 was sat by 31,639 of 78,798 applicants and its result of 26 May 2025 qualified 7,358 for 609 posts, subject to the women’s reservation appeal of 2019.
What stopped the assistant engineer round
- A single judge’s order of 25 September 2025 — in Rajat Maurya and others, directing the commission to redraw the preliminary result so that reserved-category candidates above the unreserved cut-off went to the open list, making the shortlist 9,135 rather than 7,358, before any mains.
- A division bench stay of 26 September — allowing the mains of 28 and 29 September to proceed on condition that the result stayed unpublished until the appeal was heard.
- No result since — the commission’s home page and its 2026 calendar carry no assistant engineer item; a coaching-site account of a January 2026 RTI reply says the process is on hold and that requisitions for a new round were being corrected. The 2026 calendar does list a research assistant (engineering) examination on 8 September and the assistant architect screening on 17 December.
The power corporation has left the field
UPPCL’s vacancy page carries no junior engineer, assistant engineer or technician advertisement of 2025 or 2026; its notice of 13 September 2024 said future assistant engineer recruitment in the corporation and its companies would be on the GATE 2025 score, and the generation company adopted the same by office memorandum of 30 December 2024. No GATE-based advertisement has followed. The last advertisements — 113 assistant engineers in January 2022, 25 junior engineers civil in March 2022 and 891 technicians in September 2022 — were computer-based tests with a quarter mark off per wrong answer, and press claims of 600 posts in 2026 rest on an engineers’ association letter, not a notice.
