COMEDK UGET — Using mock tests as a measurement

A hundred and eighty questions is a long paper, and concentration across three hours is a real factor. Candidates who practise in shorter blocks find their accuracy falls away in the final subject, which in an equally weighted paper costs exactly as much as a fall anywhere else.

What to review

  • Blanks — always zero — no penalty means no reason to leave anything.
  • Accuracy in the final hour — a decline signals concentration rather than knowledge.
  • Mathematics accuracy specifically — for the tie-breaking advantage.
  • The weakest of the three subjects — equal weighting makes it the binding constraint on your score.

A mock routine for a long, forgiving paper

  1. Full three hours, one sitting The length is part of the difficulty. Practising in ninety-minute halves removes precisely the challenge this paper presents.
  2. Check blanks first Zero, always. No penalty applies, so any unanswered question is a discarded mark and the habit needs to be automatic before the day.
  3. Compare first-hour and last-hour accuracy A decline is a concentration finding, not a knowledge one, and the remedy is more full-length practice rather than more revision.
  4. Score by subject, every time Equal weighting makes the weakest subject the binding constraint, and only a subject-wise score makes it visible.
  5. Watch for rushing Errors on questions you knew how to do are the characteristic COMEDK loss. With a full minute available, they are almost always avoidable.

Because there is no penalty and the time allowance is generous, a COMEDK mock has an unusually clean interpretation: your score is close to a direct measure of what you know, uncontaminated by selection strategy or risk appetite. That makes it a good diagnostic for your underlying science preparation generally — including for the other entrances on your list, where the same knowledge is hidden behind more strategy.

Practise on a computer

The examination is computer-based, and moving through a hundred and eighty questions on screen — marking for review, navigating between subjects, keeping track of what is unanswered — is a workflow worth having practised. The final sweep for blanks in particular is much faster if you already know how the interface displays them.

One further habit worth building into every mock: record the number of questions you answered on the first pass without needing to return to them. In a paper with a generous time allowance, that number is a good proxy for genuine fluency, and it should climb steadily as your preparation matures. A candidate whose total score is respectable but whose first-pass count is low is relying on the second pass to rescue questions they ought to know outright — which works in a three-hour paper and will not work in any of the tighter examinations on the same candidate’s list.
