GATE — Study material for this exam

For the eighty-five marks of subject content, standard degree textbooks in your discipline are the right primary source — they carry the derivations and the worked problems that a competitive digest compresses out, and GATE questions reward exactly that depth. The notes below support engineering mathematics and the general aptitude section, which are common across papers.

How to work at GATE depth

  • Solve problems before reading solutions, always.
  • Work derivations by hand rather than accepting stated results.
  • Maintain one formula and derivation sheet per subject area, written by you.
  • Practise numerical answer type questions with attention to units and precision.
  • Revisit each heavy topic twice more before the examination.
Degree textbooks — the primary source for eighty-five marks
Standard works in your discipline, the ones your course was taught from. They carry the derivations and the physical reasoning that condensed guides compress out, and GATE questions frequently require exactly that reasoning.
A worked problem notebook — the second source
Problems solved in full rather than checked against answers. It doubles as the record of how you personally approach each problem type, and it is what you revise from later.
Engineering mathematics material — treated as a subject
Its own block of study time rather than incidental coverage. Large, learnable, examined every cycle, and consistently under-prepared.
General aptitude notes — a short finite project
Verbal ability, quantitative aptitude and analytical reasoning at a modest level. Fifteen marks that should be nearly complete after a few weeks.

Study in the order your weighting table gives rather than the order the syllabus prints. Syllabi are written to be comprehensive rather than prioritised, and a candidate working through one in printed sequence spends their freshest months on whatever happens to appear first — which is frequently not what the papers concentrate on. For anyone whose schedule may slip, that ordering determines what is left uncovered.

Solve before reading, always

A solution you have read produces recognition, which feels like capability and disappears under examination conditions. Attempting a problem for a genuine stretch before consulting anything is slower for the first weeks and is the only reliable way to build the ability the numerical questions actually test.

Reading to rebuild a degree subject into something retrievable under a clock.
PartRead thisDo not spend time on
Your discipline’s core subjectsThe chapters your weight table ranks highest, rebuilt onto one page each — definitions, standard results, the formulas that appear and the question forms that recur.Reading a degree textbook from chapter one, which leaves the weighted chapters unrevised four weeks later.
Engineering mathematicsThe prescribed topics, worked in volume. Common across papers and reliably examined.Skipping it as generic; it is a defined and scoreable block.
General aptitudeVerbal and numerical aptitude drilled in short sets — a small, reliable block discipline-focused candidates concede.Ignoring it because it is not your subject.
Numerical answer questionsPractised specifically, since they permit no elimination and demand precision.Assuming multiple-choice practice covers them.
The paper code and its syllabusConfirmed in the current brochure, because eligibility, syllabus and the programmes a score serves all follow from it.Preparing a subject before settling the code.
