RRB NTPC — Study material for this exam
The general knowledge and science notes deserve the largest share of your reading time here, which is unusual advice and follows directly from the mark distribution. Class-10 level science in particular is worth covering completely rather than sampling — it is a bounded body of content that appears reliably, which makes it some of the most predictable marks in the exam.
How to revise a large awareness syllabus
- Build one-page theme sheets rather than reading a book linearly.
- Revise each sheet weekly. Frequency beats depth for recall-based content.
- Cover class-10 science completely; it is finite and reliably examined.
- Keep current affairs to one source, revisited, rather than several skimmed.
- General awareness — the priority, kept as sheets
- Polity, modern history, geography, class 10 science, static general knowledge and the railway seam. One page per theme, revised weekly. Sheets get revised; chapters get intended.
- Mathematics — a fluency project
- Arithmetic, with school-level algebra, geometry and mensuration behind it. The aim is not to learn methods you have not seen but to make familiar ones automatic and error-free.
- Reasoning — a volume project
- Series, analogies, coding and decoding, syllogism, Venn diagrams, puzzles and the non-verbal set. Almost all of it improves through repetition rather than through theory.
- Current affairs — one running source
- Twenty minutes daily from a single source, maintained across the whole process including the gaps between stages. Switching sources resets your exposure without adding coverage.
The unusual instruction for this examination is to spend more of your reading time on general knowledge and science than on mathematics, which runs against the instinct of anyone who has prepared for banking or SSC papers. It follows directly from the mark distribution: general awareness is forty of a hundred in CBT 1 and fifty of a hundred and twenty in CBT 2, while mathematics is thirty and thirty-five.
Cover class 10 science completely
It is one of the few genuinely finishable components in this preparation, it is reliably examined, and it sits inside the largest section. Working through school physics, chemistry and biology chapter by chapter — with a checklist marking what is finished rather than what is started — is a more productive use of two months than any amount of additional current affairs reading.
What to read for each section, and where the marks per hour actually are.| Section | Read this | Do not spend time on |
|---|
| General awareness | The largest and fastest-scoring block: static pairs, Indian history and the national movement, geography, polity, economy, general science and current affairs, plus material on Indian railways itself. | Depth in any single subject. The questions are single-fact and the section is very broad. |
|---|
| General science | Class 10 level physics, chemistry and biology, covered completely rather than deeply. This is a defined, finishable syllabus. | Senior-secondary or entrance-level science, which is above the level asked. |
|---|
| Mathematics | Arithmetic to completion, plus basic algebra, geometry, mensuration and elementary statistics. | Advanced mathematics. Time here has a poor return relative to general awareness. |
|---|
| General intelligence and reasoning | A question bank across the standard families including non-verbal, drilled in short daily sets. | Extended theory. The forms are mechanical once recognised. |
|---|
| The stage after the papers | The typing skill test or the computer-based aptitude test, depending on the post, prepared for on a daily schedule. | Deferring it until a written result. A prescribed typing speed takes months. |
