SSC CHSL — SSC CHSL exam pattern 2026: Tier 1, Tier 2, typing test and negative marking
CHSL has two computer-based tiers. Tier 1 is a one-hour, 200-mark screening paper; Tier 2 is a longer paper of harder questions with a computer module and a skill or typing test attached, and the merit list is built from its two objective sections. The 2026 notice keeps the Tier 2 scheme of recent cycles and adds sectional timers to Tier 1.
SSC CHSL Tier 1 exam pattern 2026. Objective multiple choice in English, Hindi and the regional language chosen for Parts II–IV; 0.50 marks deducted per wrong answer.| Part | Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|
| I | English Language (basic knowledge) | 25 | 50 | 15 minutes |
|---|
| II | General Intelligence | 25 | 50 | 15 minutes |
|---|
| III | Quantitative Aptitude (basic arithmetic skill) | 25 | 50 | 15 minutes |
|---|
| IV | General Awareness | 25 | 50 | 15 minutes |
|---|
| Total | 100 | 200 | 60 minutes (80 for scribe-eligible candidates) |
|---|
Tier 1 is qualifying. Separate cut-offs are declared for the DEO posts and for LDC/JSA, and candidates are shortlisted for Tier 2 in each list; the marks are not carried forward. Each part locks when its 15 minutes end, so the paper is four short tests rather than one hour to distribute.
SSC CHSL Tier 2 exam pattern 2026, Session 1. One mark deducted per wrong answer; Section 3 is qualifying.| Section | Module | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|
| Section 1 | Module 1 — Mathematical Abilities | 30 | 90 | 1 hour for the section, 30 minutes per module |
|---|
| Section 1 | Module 2 — Reasoning and General Intelligence | 30 | 90 | |
|---|
| Section 2 | Module 1 — English Language and Comprehension | 40 | 120 | 1 hour for the section |
|---|
| Section 2 | Module 2 — General Awareness | 20 | 60 | |
|---|
| Section 3 | Module 1 — Computer Knowledge Test | 15 | 45 | 15 minutes |
|---|
SSC CHSL Tier 2, Session 2 — the qualifying skill and typing tests, held on the same day after Session 1.| Test | Who | Standard | Duration |
|---|
| Skill test, Part A | DEO in the departments listed in the notice | 15,000 key depressions per hour, judged on correct entry of a printed English passage of about 3,700–4,000 key depressions | 15 minutes |
|---|
| Skill test, Part B | All other DEO and DEO Grade A posts | 8,000 key depressions per hour on a printed passage of about 2,000–2,200 key depressions | 15 minutes |
|---|
| Typing test | LDC and JSA | 35 words per minute in English (about 10,500 key depressions per hour) or 30 in Hindi (about 9,000), on accuracy over a set passage | 10 minutes |
|---|
How Tier 2 is scored
- Merit comes from Sections 1 and 2 — 120 questions for 360 marks. Section 3 Module 1 is mandatory and qualifying; Module 2 is qualifying and has no marks.
- Session 2 is evaluated only for candidates who qualify Session 1 — A candidate below the qualifying marks in Session 1 does not have the skill or typing test evaluated.
- Wrong answers cost a full mark against three — The same arithmetic as CGL Tier 2: a four-option blind guess loses on average, a two-option guess is worth taking.
- Timers are per section, and per module in Section 1 — You cannot carry unused minutes from mathematics into reasoning, or from Section 1 into Section 2.
Minimum qualifying marks that apply before any shortlisting — a candidate below these in any paper is not considered regardless of the cut-off.| Category | Minimum qualifying marks |
|---|
| Unreserved | 30% |
|---|
| OBC and EWS | 25% |
|---|
| All other categories | 20% |
|---|
Marks are normalised across shifts by the Commission’s formula of 2 June 2025, and cut-offs are computed on normalised marks. For reference, the CHSL 2025 Tier 1 cut-offs for LDC/JSA, declared on 27 February 2026, were 144.26 (UR), 143.83 (OBC), 141.42 (EWS), 125.40 (SC) and 115.25 (ST) out of 200, with 37,520 candidates shortlisted for Tier 2.
