SSC CPO Preparation

Weight your preparation the way the marks are weighted. English is 225 of 420 written marks and 200 of the 320 that build the merit list, and fitness decides whether you sit the second paper at all.

SSC CPO — How to prepare

A plan that matches the mark distribution

  1. From day one — English, daily, without exception. Grammar rules, a running vocabulary list, and a comprehension passage every day. This is the largest single block of marks in the exam and the slowest to build.
  2. From day one — physical training. Running, plus the jump and throw events if you are a male candidate. The physical stage sits between the two papers; failing it ends the attempt.
  3. Months one to three — quantitative aptitude. Arithmetic first, then geometry, mensuration and trigonometry, which carry real weight in CPO Paper 1.
  4. Months two to four — reasoning and general awareness. Reasoning for speed, general awareness as a daily habit from a single source.
  5. Month four — Paper 1 mocks under full timing. Two hundred questions, two hours, no pauses.
  6. Throughout, and intensively after Paper 1 — Paper 2 practice. Full two-hour English sets, to build the concentration the paper demands as much as the knowledge.

Where CPO candidates go wrong

  • Treating Paper 2 as a formality — it carries 320 marks against 100 in Paper 1, builds the merit list on its own, and is the usual difference between selection and a near miss.
  • Postponing physical training until after Paper 1 — the gap between the paper and the physical test is short.
  • Leaving the driving licence requirement late — where it applies, it takes time to obtain and cannot be arranged at the last minute.
  • Preparing English through vocabulary lists alone — grammar rules and reading speed carry more of Paper 2 than isolated word lists do.

Because the age band for CPO is narrower than for other SSC examinations, most candidates have a limited number of attempts. That argues for a serious, well-sequenced first attempt rather than a casual one used as practice.

The mark arithmetic that should drive your timetable
Paper 1 carries a hundred marks, of which twenty-five are English. Paper 2 carries 320 marks, of which 200 are English. That is a clear majority of the written total resting on one subject, and a timetable that gives English a quarter of your hours is not matched to the exam you are sitting.
Fitness as a parallel track, not a phase
The physical tests sit between the two papers, which means there is no point in the calendar at which you can safely stop training. Three or four sessions a week from the beginning, including running at the PET distance and practice at the jumps and the throw.
Quantitative aptitude and reasoning as finite projects
Both appear in Paper 1 only. Build them to a solid level over a few months, then maintain with weekly practice rather than continuing to add depth that the exam will never ask for.

A candidate coming to CPO from SSC CGL preparation starts with a real advantage in Paper 1 and almost none in Paper 2, and the temptation is to lean on the strength rather than repair the gap. Resist it. The CGL-trained candidate who spends the extra months on quantitative aptitude they already handle well, rather than on the two hundred English questions they have never rehearsed, is optimising the smaller half of the paper.

Confirm the conditions attached to the post

Some Sub-Inspector posts carry additional requirements beyond the written and physical stages — a driving licence among them, where it applies. These take real time to arrange and cannot be produced at short notice. Read the eligibility section of the notification in full during your first week, not at the document verification stage.
