Karnataka Village Administrative Officer

The Village Administrative Officer — the post the state called Village Accountant until the cadre was renamed — is the revenue department’s officer in the village: the keeper of land records, the first signature on a caste or income certificate, the officer who reports a crop loss. It is a district Group C post, recruited by each district’s deputy commissioner and confined to that district, on a single state-wide examination the Karnataka Examinations Authority conducts and then breaks into district merit lists.

The 2026 round is the second under this arrangement. Two notifications of 10 July 2026 offer 505 posts across the residual-cadre districts and 67 in Kalaburagi, Bidar and Raichur under Article 371J — 572 in all, after the 1,000 of 2024. Applications closed on 20 August after two extensions and fees on 26 August; the Kannada language test was held on 22 August with its final score list on 2 September; and the two papers are on 4 October for the residual cadre and 25 October for Kalyana Karnataka. A candidate applies to one district and competes only there.

Overview

What Karnataka Village Administrative Officer is, and who it suits

The arrangement is set out in the notification’s own words: the deputy commissioner is the appointing authority, KEA conducts the competitive examination and forwards district-wise merit lists to government, which passes them to the deputy commissioners, who complete the recruitment. In the 2024 round Hassan district published its one-to-three provisional list on 23 December 2024, its one-to-one list on 15 January 2025 and its final list on 27 January — the sequence every district follows, on its own website, after KEA’s final score list.

The 2026 posts are distributed by district in the residual notification — Belagavi 61, Chikkaballapura 39, Vijayapura 34, down to Bengaluru Urban 3 — with the category roster for each in a separate classification document, and the three Kalyana Karnataka districts in their own notification. The candidate chooses one district at application and cannot compete elsewhere; the choice is the first strategic decision, because the cut-off is the district’s, not the state’s.

What the notification settles

  • A Karnataka-weighted general paper — Paper 1 lists current affairs, general science and the Constitution, and then the state’s history and geography, state and district administration, rural development and cooperatives, the Karnataka economy and the environment — the syllabus of a revenue officer, not a generalist.
  • The Kannada test is common and earlier — KEA held one test on 22 August 2026 for the VAO, police constable, surveyor, residential-school teacher and legal services applicants together — 100 questions at 1.5 marks, no negative marking, 50 to pass — and published the final score list on 2 September.
  • Horizontal reservations — for Kannada-medium, rural and project-displaced candidates, alongside the vertical roster; the percentages are in the classification documents.
  • No interview, no typing test — KEA’s score list, with 50 in Kannada and 35 per cent in the papers, is the merit; the district’s lists follow it by reservation.

The name on the hub and the name on the notification

This site’s Karnataka hub lists the post as Village Accountant, the name it carried for decades and the one most candidates search for. The 2024 and 2026 notifications call it Village Administrative Officer — ಗ್ರಾಮ ಆಡಳಿತ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ — and the revenue department’s own site carries no recruitment notice; KEA’s pages are the source.

The merit is district-wise

KEA’s final score list — candidates with 50 in Kannada where required and 35 per cent in the papers — is broken into district merit lists, and each deputy commissioner selects from the list for that district alone. A score that ranks in the top three per post in one district may not in another. The 2024 final list was published on 12 December 2024 and handed to the districts; the district lists followed within six weeks.

What the 2024 round settled

  • Only keys are published — KEA’s 2024 page carries the provisional and final keys for both papers; the question booklets are not posted.
  • One to three, then one to one — the district calls three candidates per post for document verification, publishes a one-to-one list with an additional list, then the final list.
  • The Kannada test may be held twice — in 2024 on 29 September and 26 October, the second a day before the papers; in 2026 once, on 22 August.

Who recruits Village Administrative Officers in Karnataka?

Each district’s deputy commissioner is the appointing authority. KEA conducts a common competitive examination and sends district-wise merit lists to government, which forwards them to the deputy commissioners, who publish a one-to-three list, verify documents, publish a one-to-one list and then the final list on the district website. A candidate applies to one district only.

What is the Karnataka VAO exam pattern?

A Kannada language test of 150 marks with 50 to pass, qualifying only, for candidates not exempt; then two objective papers of 100 questions and 100 marks in two hours each on one day — Paper 1 general knowledge, with the state’s history, geography, administration, rural development and economy named in the syllabus, and Paper 2 general Kannada, general English and computer knowledge. A quarter mark is deducted per wrong answer, 35 per cent of the aggregate is required, and the merit is district-wise. No interview.

What is the qualification and age for Karnataka VAO?

Two-year PUC or an equivalent — CBSE or ICSE class 12, NIOS, a two-year ITI or JOC, or a three-year diploma, with the government tool room diploma admitted by clarification. Age 18 to 40 for the general category, 43 for 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B and 45 for SC, ST and Category I on the closing date, including the one-time five-year relaxation of January 2026.

Is the Kannada test compulsory for Karnataka VAO?

Yes, unless exempt — Kannada as a first or second language at SSLC, schooling in Kannada medium, or a previous pass in the commission’s or KEA’s test exempts. The 2026 test was held on 22 August as a common test for five recruitments, 100 questions at 1.5 marks with no negative marking, 50 to pass; the final score list is on KEA’s site.

What is the fee and pay for Karnataka VAO?

₹750 for the general category and the 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B categories, ₹500 for SC, ST, Category I, ex-servicemen and third-gender candidates, and ₹250 for PwD. Pay ₹34,100 to ₹67,600 under the new pension scheme, up from ₹21,400 to ₹42,000 in the 2024 notification.

Is Village Accountant the same as Village Administrative Officer?

Yes. The post was called Village Accountant for decades and the cadre has been renamed Village Administrative Officer; the 2024 and 2026 notifications use the new name. The duties — land records, certificates, crop and revenue reporting at the village — are the same.
