Overview
What Maharashtra Police is, and who it suits
The unit structure sets the numbers and the competition. Mumbai’s commissionerate advertised 2,459 constables, Pune City 1,733 including 33 bandsmen, Mira-Bhayandar 840, Mumbai Railway 743, Gadchiroli 717 for residents of that district alone, Thane City 654 and Nagpur City 595, down to Nagpur Railway’s 18; the SRPF groups from Unit 20 Varangaon’s 291 to Group 16 Kolhapur’s 31; the four prison regions 176, 130, 130 and 118. A candidate may apply for a given post in one unit only, and for up to five different posts on separate forms and fees. The vacancies were counted to 31 December 2025.
The rules are the Maharashtra Police Constables (Recruitment) Rules of 2011 as amended in June 2022, when rule 4 was rewritten to put the physical test first. Under it, candidates who meet the physical and educational standards take a physical fitness test of 50 marks — 1,600 metres for 20, 100 metres for 15 and shot put for 15 for men; 800 metres, 100 metres and shot put for women — and those with 50 per cent are called to a written test of 100 marks in the ratio of one to ten of the vacancies in each category, with everyone tied at the hundredth place included. The written test is multiple-choice in Marathi over 90 minutes, on arithmetic, general knowledge and current affairs, an intelligence test and Marathi grammar, with 40 per cent to qualify; the unit’s selection board then adds the two and applies the reservation steps of the home department’s resolution of 10 December 2020.
The posts and how they differ
- Police constable, bandsman and prison constable — the scheme above; bandsmen need only SSC and pass a musical-skill test; prison constables are recruited by the police department under the same rules for the prisons.
- Police constable driver — physical test 50 — 1,600 or 800 metres for 30 and shot put for 20 — then a driving skill test of 50 in light and jeep-type vehicles at 40 per cent, qualifying only, then the written test with motor-vehicle and transport rules added. A valid licence at application; heavy vehicle licence within five years.
- SRPF armed constable, men only — physical test of 100 — 5 kilometres for 50, 100 metres for 25, shot put for 25 — at 50 per cent, then the written test of 100; 168 cm; age 18 to 25, or 30 for reserved categories; some units for local residents only.
- Gadchiroli — residents of the district only, with an additional 100-mark Gondi or Madia language test at 35 per cent, not counted, and a non-transferable posting.
Where the sub-inspector is
The police sub-inspector is recruited by the Public Service Commission through its Group B non-gazetted combined examination — a preliminary, a mains, a physical test at 60 per cent and an interview of 40 marks — and is covered on the MPSC Group B page. The commission also runs a limited departmental competitive examination for serving constables to become sub-inspectors, whose 2023 cycle published its recommendation list in 2026.
