Maharashtra Talathi

The Talathi is the revenue department’s officer in the village — the keeper of the 7/12 extract and the mutation register, the first signature on a caste, income or residence certificate, the officer who reports the crop and the calamity. It is a Group C post at pay level S-8, ₹25,500 to ₹81,100, recruited district by district for the collector, and the largest clerical recruitment the department runs. The post has been renamed Village Revenue Officer, and the 2026 advertisements use that name with Talathi in brackets.

The route has changed. The 2023 recruitment of 4,644 posts was run by the Settlement Commissioner through a computer-based test in fifty-seven sessions with normalisation, and its result — with a normalised score above the paper’s maximum — drew a demand for an inquiry and a revised list. The 2026 posts, 1,539 of them, were added on 22 July 2026 to the Public Service Commission’s Group C combined examination under a general administration department resolution of 5 May 2026; applications closed on 5 August and the preliminary, postponed twice, is on 3 January 2027.

Overview

What Maharashtra Talathi is, and who it suits

The 2023 advertisement of 26 June 2023 is the last document written for the post alone, and it describes the job’s entry conditions as the department sees them: a degree of a recognised university under the rules of July 2010, knowledge of Marathi with the state board’s Marathi or Hindi test to be passed after selection if neither was taken at SSC, a computer certificate under the 2013 resolution or within two years of appointment, and a domicile certificate for any reservation claimed. Applications ran from 26 June to 17 July 2023 at ₹1,000, or ₹900 for reserved categories and the scheduled-area posts, and the test was held online from 17 August to 14 September 2023 at 36 district centres.

What followed made the 2026 change. The test drew over ten lakh applicants and about 8.6 lakh candidates across fifty-seven sessions; server faults delayed sessions and drew a probe; the result of January 2024, normalised across sessions under a formula the department published, produced a candidate with 214 of 200 marks and a demand from the leader of the opposition for a special investigation; the department clarified, revised the result in March 2024 and revised the selection list, and objections to questions went to the High Court’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar bench. The waiting list’s validity was extended to September 2025 for the court cases and the election code. The 2026 posts went to the commission.

How the 2026 recruitment works

  • One preliminary with the rest of Group C — the 1,539 posts sit the same 100-mark general ability paper as the clerk-typists and tax assistants, on OMR at 37 district centres.
  • A combined mains of 400 — Marathi and English for 200 and general studies and aptitude for 200, one hour each — the corrigendum says the mains for the added cadres follows the commission’s scheme, and the commission has said Talathi-specific instructions will follow.
  • Age on 5 August 2026 — the corrigendum fixes the Talathi age-reckoning date at the application closing date under the service entry rules, unlike the 1 October date of the other cadres.
  • District split later — the district-wise and category-wise distribution of the 1,539 posts is to be published by corrigendum before the preliminary result; the appointing authorities are the collectors.

Where the 2026 examination is described

The examination the 2026 Talathi candidate sits is the commission’s Group C combined examination, and its scheme, dates, corrigenda and fees are set out in full on the MPSC Group C page. This page covers the post, its entry conditions and the 2023 recruitment; the two are cross-linked, and a candidate should read both.

What changed and what did not

The 2023 paper had no negative marking clause and was normalised across fifty-seven sessions; the 2026 preliminary is one OMR paper on one day with the commission’s quarter-mark deduction, and the mains is two papers of 200. Both routes have a Marathi and an English component, a general studies component and arithmetic and reasoning, and neither has an interview. The commission’s advertisement carries the normalisation wording written for the computer-based test it then withdrew; with a single-session OMR paper it should not arise.
