Past papers

OET — Reading previous papers properly

The sample tests are the closest thing to past papers and should be worked under the real timings — 40 minutes of listening heard once, the 15 and 45-minute reading blocks, 45 minutes for the letter. For writing and speaking, the sample role cards and case notes for your profession show the register expected, and the published assessment criteria show how a letter or a role play is scored; OET’s on-demand masterclasses walk through both.

What to take from each sample

  • Listening Part A note completion — the words must fit the notes exactly as a colleague would write them; a paraphrase that changes the clinical sense is wrong.
  • Reading Part A speed — twenty questions in fifteen minutes across four texts is a scanning task, not a reading one.
  • The letter’s selection — the case notes contain more than the reader needs; marks go for choosing and ordering, not for reproducing.
  • The role play’s clinical criteria — relationship building and checking the patient’s understanding are scored as much as grammar.
