TOEFL — Reading previous papers properly

ETS sells TOEFL Practice Online tests scored like the live test, singly or in packs, and publishes free sample questions for each task type. Because the test adapts, the point of a practice test is to learn the twelve task mechanics and to see a scored estimate on the 1–6 scale, not to meet familiar questions. Older books remain useful for academic reading and listening — the academic passage and the academic talk are recognisable descendants — and useless for integrated tasks, which no longer exist.

What to take from each practice test

  • Speed on the short tasks — Complete the Words, Build a Sentence and Listen and Choose a Response reward fast, accurate processing; hesitation costs more than difficulty.
  • Register in the email and the discussion post — the reader and the purpose set the tone; a well-argued post in the wrong register loses marks.
  • Accuracy in Listen and Repeat — every word and the stress pattern; it is closer to PTE’s Repeat Sentence than to anything in the old TOEFL.
  • Fullness in the interview — answers that stop early leave the rater little to score.
