Adaptive testing means the difficulty of the next question depends on how you have answered so far, which has two practical consequences. Early questions carry disproportionate influence on where the algorithm places you, so a careless early error is expensive. And you cannot skip a question and return to it in the ordinary way — though the review-and-edit facility provides a limited version of that at the end of each section.

Using the review-and-edit facility

  • Bookmark as you go — flag questions you were uncertain about, so you can find them quickly at the end.
  • A limited number of edits per section — so bookmark liberally but plan to change few.
  • Time must be reserved for it — the facility is worthless if the section clock has run out.
  • Change an answer only for a reason — second-guessing without new insight usually makes things worse.

Scores are valid for years and may be sent selectively

GMAT scores remain valid for several years and candidates may choose which scores to report to schools. Combined with the ability to retake the test after a short interval, this gives candidates considerably more control over their record than a once-a-year Indian entrance allows.

What adaptive difficulty means for pacing
As you answer correctly the questions get harder, which means your time per question naturally rises through a section. A pacing plan built on a constant seconds-per-question figure will leave you behind late in a section you are doing well in — which is a strange and specific way to lose marks.
Why you cannot skip and return freely
The adaptive algorithm requires an answer before it selects the next question, so the familiar strategy of scanning a section and choosing the easy questions first does not exist here. Every question must be answered as it comes, which makes the decision to move on a decision to guess.
What the review-and-edit facility actually offers
A limited number of changes per section, available at the end, provided you have left time. It is not a second pass at the section and it will not rescue a badly paced one — it is a chance to revisit a small number of questions you deliberately flagged.

The section order choice is worth treating as a real decision rather than a formality. Because the test is adaptive and each section is separately scored, the order affects how fresh you are for the section that matters most to your target schools and to your own weakest area. Most candidates find one order consistently better across practice tests, and the only way to find yours is to try both.

Scores are valid for years and may be sent selectively

GMAT scores remain valid for several years, and candidates have a degree of control over which scores are reported to schools. That changes the risk profile of an early attempt considerably compared with an annual Indian entrance, and it is one of the reasons a planned retake is a normal part of GMAT preparation rather than a contingency.
