Notes
GMAT — Study material for this exam
For the GMAT specifically, official GMAC guides and question banks should be the core of your material, because the logical precision of the questions is what the test measures and third-party imitations frequently miss it. The notes on this site are useful for rebuilding quantitative fundamentals and general verbal ability, which the official material assumes rather than teaches.
How to structure GMAT study
- Official GMAC guides and question banks as the primary source.
- These notes for rebuilding arithmetic and algebra fundamentals, which the official material assumes.
- Daily reading of demanding non-fiction for comprehension speed.
- An error log by question type and cause, reviewed weekly.
- Adaptive practice tests every three or four weeks, not clustered at the end.
- Official GMAC guides and question banks — the core
- Not a preference but a requirement, because the value of a GMAT question lies in how its distractors are built and only official material meets that standard consistently. Third-party questions are supplementary at best.
- Adaptive practice tests — the measurement
- Limited in supply, so spaced deliberately across the preparation rather than clustered before the attempt. They are the only realistic score predictor available.
- Fundamentals material — the assumed base
- Arithmetic and algebra worked to fluency. The official material assumes this base rather than teaching it, which is where general quantitative notes are genuinely useful.
- Demanding non-fiction — the daily habit
- Long-form journalism, science writing, economic and historical argument. Comprehension speed on dense unfamiliar prose is built over months and cannot be assembled late.
Check the publication date of everything you use. The Focus Edition changed the sections meaningfully — geometry and sentence correction out, Data Insights elevated to a scored section — and a great deal of widely recommended material still describes the older test. Time spent on removed content is not merely wasted; it comes directly out of the Data Insights preparation that the current format most rewards and that fewest candidates have done.
Review the error log weekly, by cause
Because the GMAT tests a narrow set of abilities precisely, the same failure modes recur — scope shifts accepted, assumptions unnoticed, data sufficiency questions over-solved. A log organised by cause and reviewed weekly turns those recurrences into corrections, where a log organised by topic simply records that verbal is difficult.
Reading for an adaptive test, where accuracy early matters and pace cannot slip.| Section | Read this | Do not spend time on |
|---|
| Quantitative reasoning | Arithmetic, algebra and number properties worked for accuracy under time. The syllabus is narrow; the reasoning is the difficulty. | Advanced mathematics, which is not what the section tests. |
|---|
| Verbal reasoning | Critical reasoning and reading comprehension practised at length, since these reward argument analysis rather than vocabulary. | Vocabulary lists. |
|---|
| Data insights | Data sufficiency, table and graphics interpretation and multi-source reasoning, practised as their own formats. | Assuming quantitative practice covers them. |
|---|
| Official practice material | Used as the primary source, because question style is what this test is most consistent about. | Third-party material as the main diet, which can misrepresent difficulty and style. |
|---|
| The adaptive format | Understood — the test adjusts to your answers, so pacing and steady accuracy matter differently from a fixed paper. | Skipping questions the way you would in a fixed paper. |
