IBPS Clerk Preparation

Two skills decide IBPS Clerk: how fast you calculate, and how much financial awareness you have accumulated. Both are built by daily habit rather than by study blocks.

IBPS Clerk — How to prepare

A four to six month plan

  1. From day one — calculation drilling, fifteen minutes daily. Tables, squares, cubes, fraction-percentage equivalents, and simplification sets against a clock. Unglamorous and the highest-return habit in this exam.
  2. From day one — financial and general awareness, twenty minutes daily. The largest mains section, entirely learnable, and impossible to cram at the end.
  3. Months one to three — arithmetic and data interpretation. Percentage and ratio first, then the standard arithmetic topics, then data interpretation as a distinct skill.
  4. Months one to three — reasoning, with puzzles daily. Two or three puzzles a day. The clerical puzzle set is learnable within a few months of steady practice.
  5. Alongside — English, grammar-led. The clerical English paper rewards grammar accuracy and vocabulary more than inference, so rules and word lists genuinely pay here.
  6. Month four — sectionally timed mocks, twice weekly. Prelims format first, then mains format as the mains date approaches.

Common mistakes

  • Using a calculator during practice — the exam is substantially a mental arithmetic test; practising with a calculator trains the wrong skill entirely.
  • Leaving financial awareness to the end — fifty marks that reward months of light daily contact and punish last-minute revision.
  • Chasing a high score in one mock — the cutoff rewards a consistent floor, not an occasional peak.
  • Choosing the state carelessly — it fixes your cutoff and carries a language expectation.
The calculation habit
Fifteen minutes of pure drilling every day — simplification, approximation, tables, percentages — separate from any topic study. It is the most boring part of this preparation and the one most directly connected to the score.
The awareness habit
Twenty minutes daily from one running source, from the first week. Fifty mains marks accumulated slowly, which is the only way they can be accumulated.
The puzzle habit
Two or three a day, timed, throughout. Reasoning with computer aptitude is the heaviest mains section, and puzzles are where its marks concentrate.
The computer aptitude project
A short, finite block of a few weeks. Fundamentals, hardware and software, operating systems, office applications, internet and networking basics, and security. Easy marks that candidates leave because the section sounds technical.

On preparing for IBPS Clerk and SBI Clerk together, which is the sensible default: the syllabi overlap almost completely and the calendars rarely collide, so one preparation genuinely covers both. Keep the differences in view rather than in a separate plan — SBI frames questions less predictably and has its own language requirement, IBPS runs a state-wise merit — but do not build two study schedules for what is substantially one body of material.

Consistency is the strategy

In an examination decided by a single objective paper against a state cutoff, the candidate who scores steadily rather than spectacularly is in the stronger position. Aim your practice at raising your worst day rather than your best one — it is a less satisfying target and a considerably more useful one.
