IBPS Clerk Syllabus

The IBPS Clerk syllabus is close to the PO syllabus at a slightly gentler depth, with one meaningful difference: financial awareness carries fifty marks in the mains, the largest single section in the paper.

Syllabus

IBPS Clerk — What the syllabus covers

Numerical Ability / Quantitative Aptitude
Simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation from tables, bar graphs, line graphs and pie charts, and the arithmetic set — percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time speed and distance, mixture and alligation, partnership, boats and streams, pipes and cisterns, permutation and combination, probability and mensuration. Simplification questions are numerous and fast, which makes calculation fluency unusually valuable here.
Reasoning Ability
Puzzles and seating arrangements, syllogism, inequality, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking, coding-decoding, alphanumeric and alphabet series, data sufficiency, and statement-based reasoning. The mains section combines reasoning with computer aptitude.
English Language
Reading comprehension, cloze test, para jumbles, error spotting, sentence improvement, fill in the blanks, vocabulary in context, phrase replacement and paragraph completion. The clerical paper stays closer to grammar and direct comprehension than the officer paper, which leans on inference.
General and Financial Awareness (mains only)
Banking terms and the structure of the Indian banking system, Reserve Bank functions, monetary policy instruments, financial institutions and regulators, government schemes, budget and economic survey highlights, and current affairs of the preceding several months. The largest section in the main examination by marks.
Computer Aptitude (mains only)
Computer fundamentals, hardware and software, operating systems, MS Office, internet and networking basics, database basics, shortcut keys and abbreviations, and cyber security awareness. Combined with reasoning in one section.

Given that financial awareness is the single largest mains section and is entirely learnable in advance, it is the most efficient place to invest daily time. Unlike quantitative aptitude, where improvement is gradual and effortful, awareness converts study into marks almost directly.

The clerical syllabus differs from the officer syllabus less in what it lists than in how deeply each item is examined. Data interpretation appears, but as straightforward tables and bar charts rather than the layered caselets an officer paper sets. Puzzles appear, but with fewer variables. That difference is genuine and should shape your material choice — but do not mistake it for an easier examination, because the cutoffs reflect the same competition and the paper compensates for its lower difficulty with a higher demand for speed.

What the mains syllabus adds

  • General and financial awareness — fifty marks, the largest section in the paper, and absent from prelims entirely. A candidate who prepared only for prelims has prepared for none of it.
  • Computer aptitude — bundled with reasoning in the mains. Finite, mechanical and quick to learn — one of the best returns per hour available in the whole preparation.
  • A wider English section — forty questions rather than thirty, with more comprehension and less pure grammar than the preliminary paper.
  • Longer sections generally — the mains runs to 125 minutes across four separately timed sections against the preliminary hour, which makes stamina a real factor for the first time.

Financial awareness is the section to start first

It is the largest, it is entirely learnable in advance, and it is the one part of the paper where months of light daily contact produce a decisive advantage over candidates who begin it after the prelims result. Nothing else in this syllabus rewards an early start as directly.
