IBPS PO Previous Papers

Banking papers do not repeat questions, but they repeat structures relentlessly. That is what past papers are for here.

IBPS PO — Reading previous papers properly

A seating arrangement puzzle is never the same twice, yet the family of puzzles is small: linear rows facing two directions, circular arrangements with mixed orientation, floor-and-flat combinations, month-and-date scheduling, and comparison-based ordering. Recognising which family a puzzle belongs to within the first ten seconds is the single biggest speed gain available in the reasoning section, and it comes from having seen a hundred of them.

Working past papers for structure

  1. Catalogue puzzles by family, not by paper. Build a personal list of the arrangement types and how each is best diagrammed.
  2. Do the same for data interpretation sets. Tabular, bar, line, pie, caselet, missing-data. Each has a fastest reading order, and it is worth finding yours.
  3. Time each set individually rather than the paper as a whole. Sectional timing means your unit of practice should be a set, not a paper.
  4. Log banking awareness questions by theme. RBI functions, banking terms, schemes, financial institutions. The themes recur even as the specifics change.

One thing past papers cannot give you is current banking awareness — those questions are tied to the months preceding each exam. Use past papers to learn which themes are asked, then follow current sources for the content itself.

The puzzle families worth cataloguing

  • Linear arrangements — single row or two rows, facing the same direction or opposite. The constraint language is standardised and worth learning as language rather than decoding afresh each time.
  • Circular and rectangular arrangements — facing inward, outward or mixed. Mixed-facing puzzles are where most candidates lose time, and they are entirely learnable.
  • Floor and flat puzzles — people, floors and often a second attribute such as a colour or a subject. Two-variable versions are the common escalation.
  • Box, month and day scheduling puzzles — ordering along a fixed sequence, usually with gaps specified rather than positions.
  • Comparison and ranking puzzles — often solvable faster with an inequality chain than with a grid, which is the kind of choice practice teaches.

The data interpretation sets repay the same treatment. Tabular, bar, line, pie, caselet, missing-data and mixed sets each have a characteristic first move — read the total, find the base year, identify what is missing — and knowing that first move is most of the speed advantage. Catalogue the sets you meet by type and write the first move beside each, then review that list rather than re-solving the sets.

Time each set, not each paper

A paper-level time gives you an average and hides everything useful. What you need is the per-set figure: this puzzle took eleven minutes, that data interpretation set took six. Under sectional timing, a single eleven-minute puzzle is the whole story of a failed section, and only set-level timing makes that visible.
