IBPS PO Preparation

The winning IBPS PO plan prepares for mains from the start and treats prelims speed as a by-product. The losing plan does the reverse and runs out of time in September.

IBPS PO — How to prepare

The gap between the prelims result and the main examination is short — a few weeks, sometimes less. That is enough time to sharpen speed, and nowhere near enough to build banking awareness from scratch or to learn data interpretation properly. So the sequencing question answers itself: the mains subjects start first.

A plan built around the mains

  1. From day one — banking and economic awareness, daily. Twenty minutes a day, every day. It is cumulative, it cannot be crammed, and it is where a large block of easy mains marks sits.
  2. Months one to three — data interpretation as a dedicated subject. Not as an extension of arithmetic. Calculation speed, percentage fluency and set-reading technique, practised as a skill in its own right.
  3. Months one to three — puzzles and seating arrangement, daily. The reasoning section is mostly puzzles. Two or three a day for three months is worth more than a hundred in a single week.
  4. Alongside — English through reading, not rules. The mains English section tests inference and tone. Read editorials daily; grammar drills alone will not get you there.
  5. Month three — start descriptive writing. One letter and one essay a week, timed. Thirty minutes is less than it sounds when you have not practised.
  6. Month four onwards — sectional-timed prelims drills. Now that the underlying skill exists, train the twenty-minute sprint.
  7. Final weeks — full mocks in both formats. Prelims for pacing, mains for stamina and section ordering.

Where IBPS PO candidates lose

  • Preparing only for prelims — and meeting a harder exam with three weeks to prepare for it.
  • Practising quantitative aptitude without a clock — in an exam defined by sectional timing, untimed practice trains the wrong thing.
  • Ignoring the descriptive paper — thirty minutes to write a letter and an essay is tight, and unpractised candidates routinely fail to finish.
  • Treating banking awareness as revision — it is a subject that needs months of daily contact, not a week of notes.
Why banking awareness has to start on day one
It is the only section that cannot be compressed. Aptitude improves with intensity — a candidate can transform their data interpretation in eight focused weeks. Awareness accumulates: it needs contact with banking and economic news across months, because a large share of the questions concern the period leading up to the exam and cannot be studied in advance from a book.
Why data interpretation deserves subject status
It carries the heaviest marks in mains and appears only lightly in prelims, which means the candidate who prepares by taking prelims mocks will systematically under-prepare it. Treat it as its own subject with its own daily slot rather than as a part of quantitative aptitude.
Why the descriptive paper needs a schedule
Thirty minutes for a letter and an essay is tight even for confident writers, and the formats are conventional enough that practice produces rapid improvement. One piece a week from month three costs almost nothing and removes an avoidable loss.

On preparing for several banking examinations in one cycle, which most candidates do: the core aptitude work is genuinely shared, so a single preparation covering arithmetic, data interpretation, puzzles and English serves IBPS PO, SBI PO and the clerical papers alike. What is not shared is the final-stage work — the descriptive paper, the interview, and SBI’s group exercise — and that is where candidates who run one undifferentiated preparation come unstuck.

Use one running source for awareness

A single business newspaper or one well-maintained monthly compilation, followed consistently, beats sampling several. Awareness questions reward recognition built by repeated exposure to the same items over months, and switching sources resets that exposure without adding coverage.
