AFCAT Mock Tests

Practise with the real deduction. A mock using fractional negative marking teaches a guessing habit this paper punishes.

AFCAT — Using mock tests as a measurement

The AFCAT deduction is severe enough that guessing discipline is a genuine skill rather than a footnote. Candidates who practise on quarter-mark or third-mark papers develop a threshold calibrated to a gentler penalty. The correction is simple but has to be practised: eliminate at least one option or leave the question.

What to measure

  • Net gain from guessed questions — count them separately. If your guesses net out negative, your threshold is too loose.
  • Time spent on spatial reasoning — the section that most improves with volume and most slows an unpractised candidate.
  • Defence awareness accuracy — the most improvable part of general awareness and the least covered by general material.
  • Overall attempt count — with this deduction, a smaller number of confident attempts often outscores a larger number of hopeful ones.

Begin selection board preparation in parallel. The Air Force Selection Board assesses officer-like qualities through psychological tests, group tasks and interview, and those reward months of activity, reading and reflection rather than a fortnight of preparation.

A mock routine for a harshly penalised paper

  1. Apply the real deduction, every time Three for a correct answer, one off for a wrong one. A mock using a quarter or a third teaches a guessing threshold this paper punishes.
  2. Count guessed questions separately Mark them as you go, then calculate their net contribution afterwards. It should be positive; if it is not, your threshold is too low.
  3. Time the military aptitude section Spatial reasoning is where an unpractised candidate loses minutes, and where practice most visibly buys them back.
  4. Score defence awareness within general awareness It is the most improvable component and the least covered by general material, so it deserves its own line in the log.
  5. Compare attempt count with accuracy Under this deduction, a smaller number of confident attempts frequently outscores a larger number with a scatter of guesses.

Ground Duty (Technical) candidates no longer sit a separate Engineering Knowledge Test, so their written preparation is the same four-section paper as everyone else. Engineers who hold a valid GATE score can also be shortlisted for the AFSB on that score, and it is worth checking the GATE cut-off the notification declares before deciding which route to lean on.

Start selection board preparation alongside, not after

The Air Force Selection Board assesses qualities formed over years — the ability to work in a group, physical confidence, having views you can explain. Those cannot be assembled in the weeks between the written result and the board call, which is why fitness, group activity and wide reading belong in the schedule from the first month.

Practising a paper where the deduction is severe.
ObservationInterpretationAction
Attempts high, score lowGuessing in a paper that penalises heavily.Attempt only what you can defend; a lower attempt count usually scores higher here.
Spatial reasoning weakThe half of the reasoning section candidates skip.Drill it specifically; it is mechanical and improves quickly.
Numerical section slowCalculation rather than method.Daily arithmetic drill on paper.
Awareness section variableStatic material revised irregularly.Short daily revision of a compact sheet.
Board preparation deferredIt carries the outcome and cannot be compressed.Start reading widely and forming views alongside the written preparation.
