Pattern

RRB Group D — RRB Group D exam pattern 2026: the Level 1 CBT, negative marking and the PET

Group D — the Level 1 recruitment — has one computer-based test, a physical efficiency test, document verification and a medical examination. The CBT builds the merit list; the PET is pass or fail; verification and medical are called one candidate per vacancy. The notification keeps the right to add a second CBT if the field requires it, but none was held in the 2025-26 cycle.

RRB Group D CBT. Objective; 1 mark per question; 90 minutes (120 with a scribe); one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer; section split indicative.

How the CBT is used

  • Minimum qualifying marks — 40 per cent for UR and EWS, 30 per cent for OBC, SC and ST, relaxable by two marks for PwBD where candidates fall short.
  • PET shortlist — Three times the vacancies, on normalised marks and merit within the RRB, with post preferences considered; the railways may raise or lower the ratio.
  • Merit for verification — Normalised CBT marks among candidates who clear the PET, called at 1:1 of the vacancies railway-wise; ties broken by age, then name.
  • Normalisation — Where a test runs in more than one shift, marks are normalised across shifts by the RRBs’ published formula, and it is the normalised score — not the raw mark — that is compared with the cut-off and used for shortlisting.
Physical Efficiency Test — qualifying, one chance per event.

What the pattern means for how you attempt the paper

  • Science and mathematics are the scoring half — Fifty marks of class-10 material with definite answers; accuracy here is what separates the shortlist.
  • Never guess across four options — A third off per error; two-option guesses only.
  • Use the mock test link — The RRBs put the interface mock online before the CBT — practise the navigation, marking for review and language switching before the day.
