CTET — How to prepare

Add it up: child development and pedagogy is thirty questions, and pedagogy accounts for a meaningful portion of the language, mathematics, environmental studies, science and social studies sections too. Across the whole paper, pedagogical understanding is worth considerably more than any single content subject — and it is the part a graduate in the relevant subject is least likely to already have.

A two to three month plan

  1. Weeks one to three — child development and pedagogy, properly. Piaget, Vygotsky and Kohlberg understood rather than memorised; inclusive education; assessment for learning. This is the foundation for the whole paper.
  2. Weeks two to six — the content subjects at the relevant class level. For Paper 1, up to class five; for Paper 2, up to class eight. The content itself is not difficult; the level is what matters.
  3. Alongside — subject pedagogy for each content area. How mathematics should be taught, why children make particular errors, what remedial teaching means in that subject.
  4. Weeks three to eight — both language sections. Comprehension practice plus language pedagogy. Sixty marks, routinely under-prepared.
  5. Weeks six to ten — past papers, focusing on pedagogy reasoning. Reading explanations rather than only checking answers.
  6. Final weeks — full timed mocks with every question attempted. Building the habit of leaving nothing blank.

The characteristic mistakes

  • Preparing content and neglecting pedagogy — the most common error, and the reason subject graduates sometimes fail a paper on their own subject.
  • Leaving questions blank — there is no negative marking; a blank is a discarded opportunity.
  • Under-preparing the language sections — sixty marks, half of it learnable pedagogy.
  • Studying content above the relevant class level — CTET asks at the level you will teach, not above it.
  • Assuming the certificate is a job — it establishes eligibility; appointment requires separate recruitment.
Pedagogy as the primary subject
Thirty compulsory questions in child development and pedagogy, plus a substantial pedagogical component inside every content section. Taken together it is the largest single body of material in the paper, and it is the part that subject knowledge does not supply.
Content at the right level, not above it
Paper 1 asks at the level of classes one to five; Paper 2 at classes six to eight. A graduate revising their own subject at degree level is preparing material the paper will not ask for, while missing how that material is taught to children.
The two languages, prepared properly
Sixty marks, half of it language pedagogy — acquisition and learning, the principles of language teaching, the role of listening and speaking, challenges of teaching in a diverse classroom. That half is learnable regardless of your fluency.

The most common CTET failure is a well-qualified subject graduate who prepares content thoroughly and pedagogy casually. It happens because content preparation feels concrete and measurable while pedagogy feels like common sense — and pedagogy questions are specifically constructed so that common sense produces the plausible wrong answer. Treating it as a subject with its own framework, studied first rather than skimmed last, is the single most useful adjustment available.

Confirm your eligibility to sit before you prepare

Eligibility depends on holding or pursuing a recognised teacher education qualification in specified combinations with your academic qualifications, and the accepted combinations are set out in the official notification. It takes twenty minutes to check and it prevents a preparation aimed at a paper you cannot yet appear for.
